Woman, Behold Your Son

A. As we get closer to the cross, we’re continuing with Jesus’ sayings from Calvary. We started with, “Father, forgive them”, an expression of forgiveness by the perfect Son.
B. Then, “Today, you will be with me in Paradise.” An expression of assurance by the perfect Savior.
C. And, third, today, “Woman, behold your son.” An expression of affection by the perfect Man.
D. G. Campbell Morgan said this about these three sayings...
1. The first: His pity for man
2. The second: His power towards those who believe in Him
3. The third: His provision for those upon whom His love is set
John 19:25–27 NKJV
25 Now there stood by the cross of Jesus His mother, and His mother’s sister, Mary the wife of Clopas, and Mary Magdalene. 26 When Jesus therefore saw His mother, and the disciple whom He loved standing by, He said to His mother, “Woman, behold your son!” 27 Then He said to the disciple, “Behold your mother!” And from that hour that disciple took her to his own home.

2. Jesus chose to accept the training and discipline of a home
3. Jesus taught that marriage is for life
4. Jesus insisted on the sanctity of the home
5. Jesus showed His love for children
C. Christ longs to be the center of every home
Psalm 127:1 NKJV
1 Unless the Lord builds the house, They labor in vain who build it; Unless the Lord guards the city, The watchman stays awake in vain.
D. Happy is the home where Christ is truly the head
1. He wants to remove the strife from your home
2. He wants to plant love in your home

This Word Reminds Us of Jesus and the Faithful

A. Only a few are there: four women and one man
Matthew 26:56 NKJV
56 But all this was done that the Scriptures of the prophets might be fulfilled.” Then all the disciples forsook Him and fled.
B. But John returns… love draws him
C. How few were the faithful… but how faithful were the few!
D. They stood at the cross
1. It was not an easy place to stand
2. Mary and the fulfilled prophecy
Luke 2:35 NKJV
35 (yes, a sword will pierce through your own soul also), that the thoughts of many hearts may be revealed.”
3. Men are willing to rally to so many banners and causes
4. Few are willing to stand at the cross
5. There have been martyrs of the cross through the ages, both men and women
E. Most of the work of Christ has been done by the minority
Matthew 9:37 NKJV
37 Then He said to His disciples, “The harvest truly is plentiful, but the laborers are few.

This Word Reminds Us of Jesus and His Faithfulness to Us

John 19:26–27 NKJV
26 When Jesus therefore saw His mother, and the disciple whom He loved standing by, He said to His mother, “Woman, behold your son!” 27 Then He said to the disciple, “Behold your mother!” And from that hour that disciple took her to his own home.
A. Notice that John is to care for Mary
B. Jesus cares for Mary’s needs:
1. For her emotional needs… has her sent away before the darkness
2. For her spiritual needs… He dies for her… and you and me
3. For her temporal needs… John will take care of her
C. John to be a personal representative for Christ
D. We are also to be ambassadors and represent Christ to others
2 Corinthians 5:20 NKJV
20 Now then, we are ambassadors for Christ, as though God were pleading through us: we implore you on Christ’s behalf, be reconciled to God.
Conclusion:
What does this statement of the cross say to you?
How will you respond?
Will you allow Christ to be Lord of your home?
Will you be faithful to Him even if it means being in the minority?
