7 Do not be idolaters as some of them were; as it is written, “The people sat down to eat and drink and rose up to play.” 8 We must not indulge in sexual immorality as some of them did, and twenty-three thousand fell in a single day. 9 We must not put Christ to the test, as some of them did and were destroyed by serpents, 10 nor grumble, as some of them did and were destroyed by the Destroyer.

1 Corinthians 10:11–13 ESV
11 Now these things happened to them as an example, but they were written down for our instruction, on whom the end of the ages has come. 12 Therefore let anyone who thinks that he stands take heed lest he fall. 13 No temptation has overtaken you that is not common to man. Intro:
Maybe you’ve looked at the demise of others..
and you’ve said:
“That will never happen to me.”
“There’s no way I’d ever do that!”
“It’s down right inconceivable that I would ever even contemplate such a thing.”
“No way.. no how.. not me!”
++
One of my class mates in High School.. His name was Brad.. he ended up spending several years in prison for manslaughter…
About a year or two after we graduated.. it happened.
++
It was a cold winter night.. the roads were icy, and it was sleeting hard..
Brad, and two of my other classmates, Mike and April… were driving around in town..
All three of them had recently been drinking.. .
++
I’m not sure how the accident happened… but the truck ended up in a stream..
Thinking that everybody would climb out and run for it..
Brad took off..
So did April..
++
But Mike.. didn’t get out as quickly as they did..
Everyone was surprised to find out, that Mike didn’t get out at all..
When all was said an done.. Brad went to prison..
++
And many of us looked on.. and said.. “Such a thing, would never happen to me.”
++
I had a few really close friends my Senior year..
Two of them, like myself, married..
++
He cheated on his first wife.. and she left him..
His second wife cheated on him.. and he left her..
My other friend was married for about five years..
They were both in the airline industry..
He was a pilot.. she was a flight attendant..
However, both of them experienced unfaithfulness in the marriage, and both of them divorced.
.. After 9-11, they both were laid off, and took up other interests..
Her new job took her on the road..
His new job, took all his time and his interest..
++
Eventually, she found someone else who would take interest in her..
And about a year ago.. they too were divorced..
When I was just 5 years old, my mom found out that my dad had been unfaithful..
They divorced..
++
When I was 11 years old, my mom found out that my first step dad was being unfaithful..
They divorced..
++
Some of us look at our marriages.. and we say.. “Oh, that could never happen to us.”
++
When I was in Jr. High, my church hired a youth leader named Roger.
Roger often shared his testimony
When he was younger, before he knew the Lord.. he was living on the streets..
And he was a heroine addict.
He spoke of the awful things that his addiction drove him to..
And the jail time he experienced because of it..
++
At that time, Roger was married with two small children..
Four or five years later..
I found out that Roger had gone back to heroine..
Left his wife..
Abandoned his children..
And had denounced his faith.
++
He was in the ministry..
And this happened to him..
++
I know of a pastor, here on the east coast.. several years ago.. ..
He had a thriving ministry..
.. until.. it came to light, that he had been taking drugs, and being unfaithful to his wife..
And he.. was in ministry..
++
Even those who served full time in the mission field..
One man, w/whom I served.. abandoned his faith and embraced a homosexual life-style..
One man, from whom both Julie and I received much spiritual counsel and guidance..
A man who led their nurse to the Lord, even as his newborn infant had just died in childbirth…
A guy, whom I considered solid..
++
He formed a relationship w/someone on the internet..
Met up with her.. was unfaithful to his wife..
They divorced..
And now, he refers to his ministry years.. and his faith..
As.. just a phase…
++
We’ve all seen people fall.. We’ve all known people who have done some pretty stupid things..
Our friends, our relatives.. our neighbors.. our family members in the church..
.. we’ve looked on. We’ve seen them slip away.. slowly, their thinking began to change..
They processed info differently..
And then, it becomes clear..
Suddenly you see what it’s all about..
++
It’s that sin.. the one that’s been going on beneath the surface..
The one that has crept into that person’s life..
And there it is…
The drugs, the adultery, the pornography, the apathy.
++
Our minds might translate the fall as an instant thing..
We don’t always see the progressive compromise coming on..
We just see the fall..
++
And THEN we say.. “Oh, that could never happen to me.”
I’m better.. I’m stronger.. I’m more equipped.. I have a good record….
++
There are some people who have greater challenges, because of their up-bringing, their specific weaknesses, or their current environment..
We might look at ourselves.. and say:
“I don’t have those problems..”
..”my upbringing was good.. I don’t feel weak in those areas.. my current environment is very supportive.. “
++
Today, there are many here.. who are privileged.
You have good accountability..
You’ve had a good upbringing in the Word..
You’ve never felt the temptation for alcohol..
You’ve never turned an eye towards pornography..
You’ve never imagined the possibility of being part of an adulterous relationship…
++
The “big sins”.. the ones that cause the pond to ripple..
The one that stirs up concern and conversation..
The ones that ruin marriages and end careers..
Those.. are just not a possibility for you..
Because… you think… “Oh, that could never happen to me.”
++
In the church at Corinth.. there were many who felt this way. ...
++
… they were strong.. they were going to keep themselves clean..
...they weren’t going to fall into the sins of their fellow congregants….
++
Even though, idolatry was all around them..
The deviant practices were common.. and acceptable..
The drunkenness was an every day thing.
++
.. They were fine.. No worries.. No chance.. No way.. no how…
It was to this crowd.. in this church, that Paul addresses in chapter ten.. ++
and it’s to us.. right here this morning.. that the H.S. addresses..
That we.. remain.. aware, of what we are capable of doing.
++
Let’s look again… at these first 5 verses.
SLIDE 6
1 Corinthians 10:1–5 ESV
1 For I do not want you to be unaware, brothers, that our fathers were all under the cloud, and all passed through the sea, 2 and all were baptized into Moses in the cloud and in the sea, 3 and all ate the same spiritual food, 4 and all drank the same spiritual drink. For they drank from the spiritual Rock that followed them, and the Rock was Christ. 5 Nevertheless, with most of them God was not pleased, for they were overthrown in the wilderness.
++
In the next verse, Paul tells us.. that this is to us.. an example.
The people of Israel.. were privileged.
They were covered.. and led, by the visible presence of God..
They were immersed and identified w/two things..
Moses in the cloud.. ..
And Moses in the Red Sea..
++
Moses had experienced many great things w/the Lord..
Moses had experienced the presence of God.. as it led them at night.. in a pillar of fire..
As it led them.. and covered them in the day time..
As a cloud.. ++
As the armies of Egypt were barreling down upon Israel..
Intending to re-enslave them..
Moses lifted up his staff..
The waters parted before him..
And the people passed through the sea.. on dry land.. ++
By a tremendous miracle of God..
They were delivered from slavery..
These are the things that Israel experienced..
They were hungry.. and no food was available to them..
and yet.. every morning.. they found sustenance from God.. just waiting for them on the ground..
This, was their daily experience..
And it was miraculous.. ++
When they were thirsty..
And there were no streams.. no rivers.. no lakes and no springs..
God provided water for them.. from a rock..
Not the kind of thing.. that water generally comes from..
It was a miracle.. ++
And they.. experienced it.. two different times..
These folks had it good..
They were spiritually privileged.. in a big way…
And yet.. when it came down to the point where they entered into the promised land..
Only two, from the original generation went in.. ++
The rest of these folks.. these spiritually privileged people..
Perished.. ++
Why? Because they doubted God.. They were faithless.. They were indulging in idolatry.. they were giving themselves over.. to their own hungers.. and their own fears. ++
Paul makes it clear.. “This is an example.”
But, as he gives the example, he throws a quick lesson in there, about Jesus. ++
The physical rock.. represented the Spiritual Rock..
During the feast of Tabernacles.. the priest would take water out of the pool of Siloam.. and ceremonially pour it out..
They did this, every day of the feast, to remember, how God provided water for them in the wilderness.. ++
On the last day.. they didn’t pour out the water..
On this day, the lack represented the water that was yet to come..
Of how God would continue to provide water for His people.. ++
In fact… it was at this moment, on this last day of the feast.... when Jesus stepped out.. and said:
++
SLIDE 7
John 7:37 ESV
37 On the last day of the feast, the great day, Jesus stood up and cried out, “If anyone thirsts, let him come to me and drink.
If anyone thirsts, let him come to Me and drink. He who believes in Me, as the Scripture has said, out of his heart will flow rivers of living water..
++
Essentially, Jesus is letting them know.. that He is the rock..
And He.. will provide for them.. “rivers of living water” ++
Even in the midst of this example.. Paul brings it home..
We, like Israel.. are privileged..
We have the Rock..
We have Jesus..
And w/Jesus in our lives.. we have His gift - The Holy Spirit..
And we know the benefits of having the H.S. ++
For what does He do for us?
Non specifically.. we know.. that His presence in our lives..
Is more helpful, and more beneficial.. than the physical presence of Jesus..
Our Lord Himself told the disciples.. that it was a good thing for Him to leave..
Why? Because He was going to send another helper… to come along side of them. . ++
SLIDE 8
John 16:7–9 ESV
7 Nevertheless, I tell you the truth: it is to your advantage that I go away, for if I do not go away, the Helper will not come to you. But if I go, I will send him to you. 8 And when he comes, he will convict the world concerning sin and righteousness and judgment: 9 concerning sin, because they do not believe in me;

John 16:10–12 ESV
10 concerning righteousness, because I go to the Father, and you will see me no longer; 11 concerning judgment, because the ruler of this world is judged. 12 “I still have many things to say to you, but you cannot bear them now.

John 16:13–14 ESV
13 When the Spirit of truth comes, he will guide you into all the truth, for he will not speak on his own authority, but whatever he hears he will speak, and he will declare to you the things that are to come. 14 He will glorify me, for he will take what is mine and declare it to you.
Jn 16.
++
Never the less, I tell you the truth. It is to your advantage that I go away; for if I do not go away, the Helper will not come to you; but g if I depart, I will send Him to you. 8 And when He has h come, He will convict the world of sin, and of righteousness, and of judgment: 9 i of sin, because they do not believe in Me; 10 j of righteousness, k because I go to My Father and you see Me no more; 11 l of judgment, because m the ruler of this world is judged.
12 “ I still have many things to say to you, n but you cannot bear them now. 13 However, when He, o the Spirit of truth, has come, p He will guide you into all truth; for He will not speak on His own authority, but whatever He hears He will speak; and He will tell you things to come. 14 q He will glorify Me, for He will take of what is Mine and declare it to you.

Back in , Jesus gave the benefits.. Of how the H.S. was going to bring to remembrance all the things that He had said.. ++
Of how the H.S. was going to lead them into the ways of truth.
And as we study, and as we live our lives… we continue to learn..
That it is by the H.S. that we are even able to understand the spiritual principles of His Word.. ++
That it is by the H.S. that we are empowered and enabled to do the work…
That it is through the H.S., that we are led and directed into the Work that God wants to do. ++
Israel had a rock, a physical stone, from which God miraculously provided water..
We have the Rock of our Salvation.. Jesus Christ.. ++
And, for those of us who have taken Him as our Savior..
For those of us who have repented of the lives we live for ourselves..
And have given those lives over to Him.. ++
We have received, something that has been miraculously given.
We have been given… the H.S.
A gift that many Xtians don’t fully understand the depth of.
A gift that many believers don’t benefit nearly enough from..
And yet, the advantages He provides to our lives.. if we would only walk in obedience….
…seek His power..
.. and seek His guidance..
.. these advantages are many.. and w/o measure. ++
Let’s read on: ++

1 Corinthians 10:6–8 ESV

(illustration)
As a child, I have had several interventions with moving vehicles.. They were always bigger and faster than me.. and I was always on something very small.. like a bicycle, or a moped, or a skateboard.
++
When I was seven, I was injured seriously when a car hit me. For several months, I was either in a wheel chair, or on crutches..
++
When I was 14, a van hit me on the highway in front of my house..
I was on a moped, turning into my driveway. The van, who ignored my hand signal and my blinker, chose to pass me as I was turning across the oncoming lane to get into my drive way.. ++
Upon impact, I was thrown several yards down the highway. I got up from that accident with a few scrapes.. ++
When I was 17, a very large car door opened before me as I was riding my bike down the street at night… with my bike light on… coming down a well lit street. ++
I hit the door, shattered the window, and landed beyond the broken glass and somehow rolled to my feet. I wasn’t hurt, but the accident ruined my front rim, and scared a man really bad. ++
That same year, I was skateboarding down a hill and through an intersection. A car coming on a perpendicular street failed to stop at his sign. I was rolling through the intersection, at the same time he did.. ++
I hit the side of his car, rolled across the hood and came off the other side of his car, on my feet.. running. Again, I wasn’t hurt.. ++
One thing I’ve learned.. and I’ve learned this lesson well..
Cars and trucks, on the highway.. are bigger and more powerful than me. ++
When I am on a bike, or on my feet, on a skateboard.
I watch out for cars and trucks, very carefully. ++
I assume that they are going to make the wrong decision.
I assume that they don’t see me. ++
It’s been my experience.. that, in my younger years… cars were drawn to me.. they didn’t like me.. the wanted to smash me… they would swerve if they had to.. but it was their intention and desire.. to find me, and run me down. ++
The experiences of my child hood serve as an example..
And they effect the way I deal with traffic.. today. ++
All of us can look at similar situations in our lives..
Where past experiences have served as examples..
And now.. we’re much more careful with sharp knives..
Now.. we treat strange dogs with respect, and keep our distance..
Now.. we make sure the floor is not covered in dry-wall dust before we climb up our ladder.. ++
Now.. we use less gas when we light up our burn piles..
Now.. when a large hurricane is coming our way.. we’re going to pack up and get out of Dodge… ++
As Xtains, we have been given the scriptures..
and in this Word.. we will find so many examples.. so many incidences of error and regret, so many teachings on wisdom and choice..
and they are all ours.. as an example.. ++
For those who committed idolatry.. sexual immorality.. those who tempted God.. those who complained..
They experienced.. the consequences… of God’s wrath.
They experienced the fruit of God’s displeasure.. ++
And as a result.. there was death.. as a result.. there was pain.. as a result.. there was fruitlessness in their lives.. ++
Fortunately, for us, we are exempt from God’s wrath.
For every wrong we have done, or will ever do.. God poured out His wrath.. for that wrong..
Upon His Son.. nearly 2000 years ago..
And when He was finished, Jesus knew it, and He announced..
“it is finished” ++
Folks.. the work is done..
We walk in forgiveness, and God does not kill us or curse us for our sins..
Not as believers.. ++
However, God does allow the natural order of this life, to do its work..
And if we step out of His will..
Out of His counsel..
And out of His direction..
We will have painful experiences..
We will have lives that are ridden with defeat and fruitlessness..
And I’m sure, that everyone of us can concur..
As believers, we have been there several times.. ++
..in our imperfection.. we have faltered.. in our choices to separate ourselves from His Word.. His Fellowship.. and His Leading..
… we’ve experienced the displeasure.. and the defeat… of disobedience.. ++
Many of us flounder there continually, because we’ve never tasted the true fruits of obedience.. ++
These are lessons..
And they are examples..
The ones in scripture..
The ones in our own lives..
The ones, in the lives of others..
We are called, to take them to heart, and learn from them… ++
If we don’t see it in ourselves.. we can see it in others..
“We humans.. are capable of some pretty bad stuff.”
Just watch the news.. read the paper.. listen to the radio.. ++
Every day, the reports of crime are given..
Just listen to your friends and your family members talk..
Every day, they give report of how they have messed up, or of how someone has done them wrong.. ++
Folks.. we are capable.. and we need the examples of failure before us..
Like the kids who are taken into the prison by the “scared straight” program..
Hopefully, we will be smart enough to look around us..
To read the scriptures..
To re-account our past experiences..
And we too.. will be “scared straight”
We need to know.. just what we are capable of.
Why?
SLIDE 13
Paul tells us:
1 Corinthians 10:12–13 ESV
12 Therefore let anyone who thinks that he stands take heed lest he fall. 13 No temptation has overtaken you that is not common to man. God is faithful, and he will not let you be tempted beyond your ability, but with the temptation he will also provide the way of escape, that you may be able to endure it.
++
Here’s our encouragement..
Yes, there’s going to be temptation.. and it will be something that humans have always faced..
And it won’t be so great, that we are unable to overcome it..
In fact, in every temptation, if we are willing to seek it.. God will provide an escape..
Let us be reminded..
it is not God.. who tempts us.. ++
fully explains the process.. ++
We are tempted.. when we are drawn away by our own desires.. and enticed.. then, when desire has conceived, it gives birth to sin, and sin, when it is full grown, brings forth.. death.. ++
Temptation is a by-product of our own desire..
God doesn’t put it there.. ++
But, God does limit its power.. and God does.. provide an escape.. ++
Conclusion:
Now.. w/all this said, it’s easy for us to see..
that we are being given a lesson, for our own lives..
of how we should look upon the Scriptural examples..
and apply them to our lives.. so that we don’t suffer the things that others have suffered.. ++
And the lesson implies what is taught elsewhere in Scripture.. ++
That if we follow the examples of those who were obedient..
We too, will experience the fruit of obedience.. just as they did..
That’s the direct lesson.. ++
But here’s the indirect lesson..
When we see people.. who have done the heinous things..
When we see the people.. who behave in ways that are offensive to us..
When we see and experience.. the direct effect of other’s sins..
We should no longer think.. as one who is judgmental.. ++
The church has a bad reputation.. for being all high and mighty..
For being “holier than thou”
For being arrogant and misunderstanding.. ++
It is our nature.. to reject that which we don’t agree with..
And yes, in principle.. we as Christians are called to reject offensive behaviors from taking root in our own lives.. ++
But.. we are never to reject an unbeliever.. because they do things..
.. or live lifestyles.. that offend us. ++
Why?? Because we know....
I see how you reach out across the lines and the boundaries..
And lend your ears and your hearts.. to so many different types of people..
For we know.. that man’s sinful nature will drive him, and make him capable of doing anything..
The behavior.. the sin.. the life style..
They are common.
And to one degree or another.. they are common to all..
The only thing that will change people.. is the gospel.. - Not our moralizing speech. Not our correction. Not our law or our rules or our standards...
++
Folks.. here’s what it boils down to..
to share.. that preaching the gospel.. is so much more.. than a verbal message delivered w/words..
it’s so much more, than the plan of salvation..
30 of us, from Virginia.. went to Mississippi, and preached the gospel..
As we handed out diapers.. water.. and toothbrushes..
There was, a significant amount of: “preaching the gospel”.. going on..
But it wasn’t all done.. w/words..
If Jesus is our example.. we see it clearly..
Almost every time.. before He called any lost soul to a place of repentance..
He first.. touched their lives.. emotionally, or physically..
It excites me to see this heart being played out in this body..
There is such a willingness, amongst many of you.. to give.. to talk.. to lend your ear..
And.. to share the message..
… w/anyone.
It doesn’t matter how they look or how they live.
He told Dave.. that he wasn’t a Christian.. and didn’t want his money going to “only Christians”..
Dave told him.. that we weren’t checking for membership cards as we distributed goods..
We were there to bring aid to everyone and anyone.. who was in need.
One of the benefits we have, as believers who are in fellowship..
is that.. we will almost always take care of one another..
and I know, down in Mississippi.. that the church is taking care of itself..
and because of that community.. and that fellowship..
they are then enabled.. to more quickly…
Go out, and take care of others..
In our work.. some criticisms have come along..
That we should just send our money to the Red Cross..
.. and stay home.. out of the way..
To that attitude.. those who live on the gulf coast.. who have lost everything are saying:
“Stop watching your TV’s.. and come help us.”
The gospel is rampant down there right now..
and it’s not in the form of soap box preaching and tract passing..
it’s in the form of: giving, serving and loving..
testimony after testimony..
We heard.. that it hasn’t been the Red Cross or anyone else who has sought them out in their need..
It’s been, an overwhelming display.. of love and compassion.. from the Church.
Yes.. the big organizations are there, in force.. doing all that they can do..
But, while they are being slowed up by beaurocracy..
The church as moved in.. and sustained the lives of thousands upon thousands of people..
This is what the church is s’posed to be doing..
And it excites me.. to see it happening.
Folks.. here’s what it boils down to..
You and I.. we are no better than anyone else..
We are capable.. and if we don’t take heed..
As it says in vs. 12..
If we don’t commit ourselves to doing what we need to do.. we might be standing right now… but…
We will fall. ++
And you and I.. we cannot fathom the depth of that fall.
We think.. “Oh, that would never happen to me.” ++
But such, is an unhealthy attitude.
Yes.. if it happened to them.. it could happen to you.
And such a thing.. teaches us two important lessons..
We need to heed our examples.. and live right..
And secondly.. we need to be compassionate, and understanding.. to those who are lost, and w/o Jesus.
Have you ever looked upon someone and said: “That could have been me.”??? ++
If you haven’t.. I suggest you start doing it..
When you see the crook.. the drunk.. the addict.. the rapist.. the homeless, the beggar
When you see those who live lifestyles.. and have philosophies that offend you..
… it’s a good thing to remember.. ++
That yes.. if it were not for the transforming power of JX in your life..
That could have been you..
And don’t stop there..
That still, could be you..
Which is why we are challenged.. in vs. 12..
To take heed! ++
Today.. I trust.. that the H.S. is encouraging your heart..
as a believer.. to receive the examples.. learn from them.. and grow..
.. as a believer.. to be understanding and compassionate.. to those who are outside of your comfort zone.. ++
And.. if you are here today..
And you’ve never made that commitment..
You’ve never, sincerely received that all important gift..
Maybe you’ve prayed in the past..
But nothing changed..
Maybe it was fear and emotion and guilt that led you to recite some prayer.. but not the H.S.. ++
If you are doubtful, of your eternal state w/God..
And the gospel message is becoming real to your heart..
That’s the H.S. – and He’s communicating an important message to you.. right now..
That you need to turn from the life your living for yourself..
And give it to Him. ++
Scripture says, if you confess w/your mouth, the Lord Jesus, and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead..
You will be saved..
The process is simple.. it’s a simple prayer in conjunction, with the faith that is given to you by the HS.. ++
God doesn’t expect you to clean up your life or change anything..
He will do that.. later.. -Let that be His job. So many poeple think they need to fix themselves before they come to God. And that my friends… is a lie. WE can’t FIX OURSELVES. ++
But God can transform us, and renew our minds.. ++
God is anxiously desiring to extend His forgiveness to you..
But He will only give it.. to those who ask..
To those who say… that they are going to make Jesus.. their Lord..
And turn.. “repent” from the life that they have been living for themselves..
It’s a simple prayer.. and today.. if the H.S. has put it on your heart..
I invite you to pray today… come forward during communion and pray with me… find someone here that you know and trust… pray with them… pray right there, where you are… there’s no formula to is..
++
God wants to save those, who seek HIm.
