Jesus was breakin all sort of social norms when He spoke to the woman at the well. Not only was she a woman in public, she was a Samaritan woman. And not only was she a Samaritan womam, she was from Sychar. The dregs of society. Not only was Jesus a Jew, He was in the lineage of King David. Not only was he in that lineage but he was a Nazarite. Historically speaking he was rabbi and teacher. At this moment in history they thought He was a prophet and not only that, the possible Messiah who had come to the world to rescue His people and restore the Kingdom of Israel. What if He stuck to His lineage and shunned the woman...

The Zax

One day, making tracks In the prairie of Prax, Came a North-Going Zax And a South-Going Zax. And it happened that both of them came to a place Where they bumped. There they stood. Foot to foot. Face to face. "Look here, now!" the North-Going Zax said, "I say! You are blocking my path. You are right in my way. I'm a North-Going Zax and I always go north. Get out of my way, now, and let me go forth!" "Who's in whose way?" snapped the South-Going Zax. "I always go south, making south-going tracks. So you're in MY way! And I ask you to move And let me go south in my south-going groove." Then the North-Going Zax puffed his chest up with pride. "I never," he said, "take a step to one side. And I'll prove to you that I won't change my ways If I have to keep standing here fifty-nine days!" "And I'll prove to YOU," yelled the South-Going Zax, "That I can stand here in the prairie of Prax For fifty-nine years! For I live by a rule That I learned as a boy back in South-Going School. Never budge! That's my rule. Never budge in the least! Not an inch to the west! Not an inch to the east! I'll stay here, not budging! I can and I will If it makes you and me and the whole world stand still!" Well... Of course the world didn't stand still. The world grew. In a couple of years, the new highway came through And they built it right over those two stubborn Zax And left them there, standing un-budge in their tracks.

We have entered a series where we have been doing some reflecting. and talking about things worth losing.
lent -
control.. expectations
today superiority.
Superiority actually keeps us from being who we are really meant to be. And before someone accuses me of saying that we are supposed to develop a strong inferiority complex where everyone is better than us, let me explain to you that you are just as horrible as the next guy. We are all sinners… all of us. no one escapes. Feeling like you are better than anyone else is a lie that can get you in a lot of trouble.

Today we are going to talk about how misplaced superiority can put us in a state where we cannot go where we are supposed to go or grow into what we are created to be.

Define it.
Illustrate it from the Bible.
Show what it looks like to lose it.
Pray for humility.

an unpleasant way of behaving that a person has when they think they are better than other people - this is where our focus is today.

The zax never got to where they needed to go because they felt that their way was the best way.

From the Bible.

Matthew 19:16–22 ESV
And behold, a man came up to him, saying, “Teacher, what good deed must I do to have eternal life?” And he said to him, “Why do you ask me about what is good? There is only one who is good. If you would enter life, keep the commandments.” He said to him, “Which ones?” And Jesus said, “You shall not murder, You shall not commit adultery, You shall not steal, You shall not bear false witness, Honor your father and mother, and, You shall love your neighbor as yourself.” The young man said to him, “All these I have kept. What do I still lack?” Jesus said to him, “If you would be perfect, go, sell what you possess and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven; and come, follow me.” When the young man heard this he went away sorrowful, for he had great possessions.

What it’s Supposed to Look Like

John 4:1–42 ESV
Now when Jesus learned that the Pharisees had heard that Jesus was making and baptizing more disciples than John (although Jesus himself did not baptize, but only his disciples), he left Judea and departed again for Galilee. And he had to pass through Samaria. So he came to a town of Samaria called Sychar, near the field that Jacob had given to his son Joseph. Jacob’s well was there; so Jesus, wearied as he was from his journey, was sitting beside the well. It was about the sixth hour. A woman from Samaria came to draw water. Jesus said to her, “Give me a drink.” (For his disciples had gone away into the city to buy food.) The Samaritan woman said to him, “How is it that you, a Jew, ask for a drink from me, a woman of Samaria?” (For Jews have no dealings with Samaritans.) Jesus answered her, “If you knew the gift of God, and who it is that is saying to you, ‘Give me a drink,’ you would have asked him, and he would have given you living water.” The woman said to him, “Sir, you have nothing to draw water with, and the well is deep. Where do you get that living water? Are you greater than our father Jacob? He gave us the well and drank from it himself, as did his sons and his livestock.” Jesus said to her, “Everyone who drinks of this water will be thirsty again, but whoever drinks of the water that I will give him will never be thirsty again. The water that I will give him will become in him a spring of water welling up to eternal life.” The woman said to him, “Sir, give me this water, so that I will not be thirsty or have to come here to draw water.” Jesus said to her, “Go, call your husband, and come here.” The woman answered him, “I have no husband.” Jesus said to her, “You are right in saying, ‘I have no husband’; for you have had five husbands, and the one you now have is not your husband. What you have said is true.” The woman said to him, “Sir, I perceive that you are a prophet. Our fathers worshiped on this mountain, but you say that in Jerusalem is the place where people ought to worship.” Jesus said to her, “Woman, believe me, the hour is coming when neither on this mountain nor in Jerusalem will you worship the Father. You worship what you do not know; we worship what we know, for salvation is from the Jews. But the hour is coming, and is now here, when the true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth, for the Father is seeking such people to worship him. God is spirit, and those who worship him must worship in spirit and truth.” The woman said to him, “I know that Messiah is coming (he who is called Christ). When he comes, he will tell us all things.” Jesus said to her, “I who speak to you am he.” Just then his disciples came back. They marveled that he was talking with a woman, but no one said, “What do you seek?” or, “Why are you talking with her?” So the woman left her water jar and went away into town and said to the people, “Come, see a man who told me all that I ever did. Can this be the Christ?” They went out of the town and were coming to him. Meanwhile the disciples were urging him, saying, “Rabbi, eat.” But he said to them, “I have food to eat that you do not know about.” So the disciples said to one another, “Has anyone brought him something to eat?” Jesus said to them, “My food is to do the will of him who sent me and to accomplish his work. Do you not say, ‘There are yet four months, then comes the harvest’? Look, I tell you, lift up your eyes, and see that the fields are white for harvest. Already the one who reaps is receiving wages and gathering fruit for eternal life, so that sower and reaper may rejoice together. For here the saying holds true, ‘One sows and another reaps.’ I sent you to reap that for which you did not labor. Others have labored, and you have entered into their labor.” Many Samaritans from that town believed in him because of the woman’s testimony, “He told me all that I ever did.” So when the Samaritans came to him, they asked him to stay with them, and he stayed there two days. And many more believed because of his word. They said to the woman, “It is no longer because of what you said that we believe, for we have heard for ourselves, and we know that this is indeed the Savior of the world.”
John 4

Let’s Talk About Jesus

A man talking to a woman in public.
A Jewish person talking to a Samaritan
Not just a Samaritan, but a woman from Sychar
The name of Sychar was a name given to them meaning liar.
historically they were know as people who would worship Idols as well as God in some sort of twisted false religion.
Traditionally they had their own mountain to worship on and couldn’t worship in Jerusalem.
They were the dirtbags of the day and traditional Jews were not supposed to talk to them
He was a Nazarite
Special rules of purity -
He was a Rabbi and teacher. At the time He was considered a prophet and quite possible the messiah that was placed on earth to free the people of Israel and restore the kingdom.
He was within his rights to disassociate himself.

Lets Talk About the Woman.

Can i tell you that she is just as likely to be a zax as anyone else. Wealth, intelligence, and nationality have little to do with it.
Um Hey --- your a Jew.
Um hey my husband… who are you to tell me what I should and shouldn’t be doing.
We worship here.. you worship there.. until the Messiah comes.
In my history of talking to people rich, poor, intelligent, not intelligent, addicted to this that or the other thing, seemingly in control of all things. The issue of superiority and obstinacy, getting in the way had nothing to do with position or status.
5. I will not move.

And Yet they Both Moved.

If Jesus would have held on to the social norms that His actual superiority afforded him, the woman and the entire town she was from would not have found their Savior.
If the woman at the well would have indignantly held on to her social norms she would have missed what God had for her.
We all have things we are supposed to do, people we are supposed to meet and talk to. We all have a path that we are supposed to be on. Whether you think you are to good to be on the journey or to bad to fulfill it, holding on to your position keeps you from experiencing the blessings God has for you.

Conclusion

1 Peter 5:6–7 ESV
Humble yourselves, therefore, under the mighty hand of God so that at the proper time he may exalt you, casting all your anxieties on him, because he cares for you.
Dropping your superiority and humbling yourselves before the Lord is the only way to get exalted -
phil 3:5-98
Philippians 2:5–8 ESV
Have this mind among yourselves, which is yours in Christ Jesus, who, though he was in the form of God, did not count equality with God a thing to be grasped, but emptied himself, by taking the form of a servant, being born in the likeness of men. And being found in human form, he humbled himself by becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross.
Philippians 3:5–8 ESV
circumcised on the eighth day, of the people of Israel, of the tribe of Benjamin, a Hebrew of Hebrews; as to the law, a Pharisee; as to zeal, a persecutor of the church; as to righteousness under the law, blameless. But whatever gain I had, I counted as loss for the sake of Christ. Indeed, I count everything as loss because of the surpassing worth of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord. For his sake I have suffered the loss of all things and count them as rubbish, in order that I may gain Christ
Philippians 4:2–8 ESV
I entreat Euodia and I entreat Syntyche to agree in the Lord. Yes, I ask you also, true companion, help these women, who have labored side by side with me in the gospel together with Clement and the rest of my fellow workers, whose names are in the book of life. Rejoice in the Lord always; again I will say, rejoice. Let your reasonableness be known to everyone. The Lord is at hand; do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus. Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is commendable, if there is any excellence, if there is anything worthy of praise, think about these things.
