What is a Priest

A priest served as a mediator between God and his people.
Because of our sin, there is now an obstacle that prevents us from reaching God.
We no longer need to go through a priest to get to God.
Jesus is able to relate to us

Jesus is able to relate to us

Hebrews 4:15 ESV
For we do not have a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses, but one who in every respect has been tempted as we are, yet without sin.
Heb 4:15-
We have a tendency to think that people are not able to relate to us. That our problems and issues are isolated to only us. When we think about God, we tend to extend that even more.
How could God who is perfect understand me?
How could God who is perfect love me?
How could God who is perfect forgive me?
There is no temptation Jesus cannot relate to us
Jesus knows what it is like to be misunderstood by your parents
Jesus knows what it is like to lose a friend
Jesus knows what it is like to be betrayed
Jesus knows what it is like to slandered, bullied, and gossiped about
Jesus knows what it is like to be anxious
And He has conquered every one of these temptations by not sinning.

Application

Run to God in every problem
Hebrews 4:16 ESV
Let us then with confidence draw near to the throne of grace, that we may receive mercy and find grace to help in time of need.
“Your worst days are never so bad that you are beyond the reach of God’s grace.” Jerry Bridges
We look to Jesus when we face struggles, because in Him we find hope.
We see an end to temptations and suffering.
We also find mercy and grace. We don’t find try harder, do this, do that. But I understand, and there is forgiveness and blessing in Christ.

Jesus Intercedes for us

Hebrews 7:25 ESV
Consequently, he is able to save to the uttermost those who draw near to God through him, since he always lives to make intercession for them.
One of the chief responsibilities of the priests is to make intercession for the people. They would go before the alter in the Temple and offer sacrifice for the sins of the people.
They would stand between the guilt of the people and the holiness of God.
Jesus does this perfectly.
The priests were not sinless.
Jesus does this constantly

Application

Confess our sins
1 John 1:9 ESV
If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.

Jesus gave his life for us

Hebrews 9:11–12 ESV
But when Christ appeared as a high priest of the good things that have come, then through the greater and more perfect tent (not made with hands, that is, not of this creation) he entered once for all into the holy places, not by means of the blood of goats and calves but by means of his own blood, thus securing an eternal redemption.
The priests would make these sacrifices as an Atonement, a reconciling of the guilt of a person’s sins with the holiness of God. These sacrifices were a substitute for the people.
Jesus became the perfect sacrifice for us. A sacrifice without blemish, without sin, someone who had walked in our shoes and was fully innocent. Someone who was our perfect substitute and willingly gave his life as a ransom for sinners.
Through this Jesus atoned for our sins of everyone who trusts in Him, reconciling them with God and securing an eternal redemption.

Application

Hebrews 10:19–25 ESV
Therefore, brothers, since we have confidence to enter the holy places by the blood of Jesus, by the new and living way that he opened for us through the curtain, that is, through his flesh, and since we have a great priest over the house of God, let us draw near with a true heart in full assurance of faith, with our hearts sprinkled clean from an evil conscience and our bodies washed with pure water. Let us hold fast the confession of our hope without wavering, for he who promised is faithful. And let us consider how to stir up one another to love and good works, not neglecting to meet together, as is the habit of some, but encouraging one another, and all the more as you see the Day drawing near.
Have confidence and assurance in your salvation
Live out your new life in Christ
Live holy lives
Do not doubt the promises of Jesus
Love, care, and encourage one another
