Scripture Reading

Context: Reading in 2 Timothy, the second letter Paul writes to his disciple, Timothy. At the time of writing this letter, Paul is in prison, a place he knows too well. However his normally sunny disposition on making it our and back into civilization is gone and leaving Paul to believe he will most likely die there.
2 Timothy 2:1–13 ESV
1 You then, my child, be strengthened by the grace that is in Christ Jesus, 2 and what you have heard from me in the presence of many witnesses entrust to faithful men, who will be able to teach others also. 3 Share in suffering as a good soldier of Christ Jesus. 4 No soldier gets entangled in civilian pursuits, since his aim is to please the one who enlisted him. 5 An athlete is not crowned unless he competes according to the rules. 6 It is the hard-working farmer who ought to have the first share of the crops. 7 Think over what I say, for the Lord will give you understanding in everything. 8 Remember Jesus Christ, risen from the dead, the offspring of David, as preached in my gospel, 9 for which I am suffering, bound with chains as a criminal. But the word of God is not bound! 10 Therefore I endure everything for the sake of the elect, that they also may obtain the salvation that is in Christ Jesus with eternal glory. 11 The saying is trustworthy, for: If we have died with him, we will also live with him; 12 if we endure, we will also reign with him; if we deny him, he also will deny us; 13 if we are faithless, he remains faithful— for he cannot deny himself.

Entrusted: Story

We want to conclude this Entrusted series by encouraging everyone in the room to truly surrender to God the most valuable and powerful thing He gave us, our story. You see, a story is something everyone has. It’s different from money, fame, cars, Super-bowl loses on the one yard line…in the simple understanding that everyone has a story that starts the second they are born.

You see my earliest childhood memory is waking up in my car seat at about midnight in our drive way with no one to be found. My mom will tell you this never happened, I’ll tell you she’s wrong. The first defining/big moment I remember from my story dates back to 2nd grade when my friend found and showed me her parent’s dirty magazines. From that moment on, I felt weird and different and I knew things I should’ve never known at that age. The next defining moment I remember is playing goalie in middle school and beating Century Christian in a penalty shootout. It was the first time in my life I was considered a hero, because honestly I was. These two moments sent ripples effects through my life that still effect who I am to this day.
I struggle with intimacy in my life and in my relationships because I still often feel shameful about events in my life. I tend to isolate and stagnate in life because I am too afraid to fail and be seen as anything other than a hero by literally anyone, even complete strangers. For so long, shame and fear defined my story. They were the root reason behind everything I did and if I am not careful, they still factor into my daily life.
This community was shaken last week by the news of another teenager passing away far too soon. I literally
Today we are going to talk about our stories and how living with a story Entrusted to God changes not only you and the people around you, but everyone.

Entrusted with Destructive Hope (v. 4)

Saul to Paul
Your story is destructive hope. ()
What I love about Paul has little to do with the words he wrote after her met Jesus and much to do with what is communicated in his experience with the destructive hope of Jesus Christ. Before we meet the powerful world changer know as Paul, we meet the vial Christ hater named Saul. One of the first mentions of Saul is directly following the stoning of Stephen, one of the bibles most celebrated martyrs in , which reads, “And Saul approved of his execution.” Paul, formally known as Saul was the literal anthesis of what it means to be a Christ follower.
And Saul approved of his execution.
However, God keeps no record of wrongs and the second we ask His Son join us in this life everything changes.

Entrusted with Debilitating Honesty (v. 5)

Paul to Timothy
Your story is debilitating honesty. ()
What I find as the most challenging component of being Entrusted with a Story is the call to honesty around my story. The shame of what I have done and what has been done to me, often causes me to hide and isolate myself. I believe the lie that my story is too shameful and will drive those I love away from me. I don’t doubt God loves me, but I question if my community still will if they actually knew me.
This community was shaken last week by the news of another teenager passing away far too soon. I literally get paid to work against this destructive trend growing among our young people. I am convicted to believe the only remedy to it is debilitating honesty. Debilitating honesty that tears down a culture that praises the projection of perfection through all means necessary. Debilitating honesty that counteracts the pressure to look like an artificially enhanced depiction of beauty or masculinity to the gripping fear of matching up to the superficial lives projected on social media.
What we see this debilitating honesty all through the writings of Paul, which happen to be nearly half of the new testament. Paul doesn’t shy away from encouraging his disciple Timothy to live conscious and opposing of and in oppo
