Because we don’t have an account of Jesus telling Peter or any of his disciples that they “belong” with him, we have to look at some of what happened in between the BRING passage that we looked at last week and the BELIEVE passage that we’ll look at next week. Just a sampling of some of the accounts of Jesus’ relationship with Peter and the rest of his disciples give us an understanding that these guys had good reason to feel like they BELONG with Jesus.
A few things that happen in between
o – Jesus heals Peter’s mother in law
o – Jesus calms the storm and teaches his disciples to trust him
o All of – The disciples observes Jesus do miracles and answer questions from the Pharisees
o – Jesus gives his disciples authority and sends them out on missions
o – Jesus explains his parables to his disciples
o – Jesus calls Peter out onto the water and saves him from sinking
o *Those in the boat called Jesus the Son of God (v. 33), but in this situation, that was their reaction to Jesus’ display of supernatural power. They were declaring their awareness that Jesus was no ordinary man. They do not yet confess that he is the Christ (Messiah), until Peter’s confession in , which is what we’ll look at next week.
So, Jesus proves himself to be trustworthy, gives his disciples access into his ministry, trusts them with responsibility and gives them a part to play, gives them special insight that he doesn’t make available to everyone else, and even cares for Peter’s relative. All of these things contribute to Peter feeling like he belongs with Jesus and is welcomed to be a part of what he’s doing.
What Can We Learn From This?
Leading someone to feel like they belong goes beyond just telling them that they belong. Your relationships with others need to include things like mutual trust, vulnerability, continual and consistent time spent together, care for their concerns, etc. in order to help them feel like they belong with you and the community that you’re in.
Challenge For Students (Can be used within lesson, and/or as small group questions):
1. If you were Peter, which ones of those stories in the passages from Matthew would make you feel like your belong?
2. Have you ever really thought about intentionally making someone feel like they belong (in your home, church, class, team, etc)?
3. Hopefully you’ve had some people in your mind throughout this series that you’ve begun to build a relationship with and maybe you’ve even offered to bring them to church. What are some things you can do to help those people feel like they belong?
