Spiritual meaning of water baptism

Baptism is not a holy word. In the greek it means:

907. βαπτίζω baptizō, bap-tid´-zo; from a der. of 911; to make whelmed (i.e. fully wet); used only (in the N. T.) of ceremonial ablution, espec. (techn.) of the ordinance of Chr. baptism:—baptist, baptize, wash.

It means to be fully wet. To dunk. I can baptise my donut in coffee. Total submersion.
Ablution means the act of washing oneself.

A washing with water, which symbolizes the cleansing of believers from the stain and dirt of sin through the grace of God. Jesus Christ submitted to baptism as an example to believers. Through the work of the Holy Spirit, baptism is linked with union with the risen Jesus Christ.

Baptism is an outward sign you are entering a covenant with God.
Colossians 2:11–12 NKJV
11 In Him you were also circumcised with the circumcision made without hands, by putting off the body of the sins of the flesh, by the circumcision of Christ, 12 buried with Him in baptism, in which you also were raised with Him through faith in the working of God, who raised Him from the dead.
Romans 6:1–10 NKJV
1 What shall we say then? Shall we continue in sin that grace may abound? 2 Certainly not! How shall we who died to sin live any longer in it? 3 Or do you not know that as many of us as were baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into His death? 4 Therefore we were buried with Him through baptism into death, that just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life. 5 For if we have been united together in the likeness of His death, certainly we also shall be in the likeness of His resurrection, 6 knowing this, that our old man was crucified with Him, that the body of sin might be done away with, that we should no longer be slaves of sin. 7 For he who has died has been freed from sin. 8 Now if we died with Christ, we believe that we shall also live with Him, 9 knowing that Christ, having been raised from the dead, dies no more. Death no longer has dominion over Him. 10 For the death that He died, He died to sin once for all; but the life that He lives, He lives to God.

1) Identified with Christ crucifixion and death:

Romans 6:6 NKJV
6 knowing this, that our old man was crucified with Him, that the body of sin might be done away with, that we should no longer be slaves of sin.

Romans 6
1) Identifed with Christ death:
Galatians 2:20 NKJV
20 I have been crucified with Christ; it is no longer I who live, but Christ lives in me; and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave Himself for me.
Romans 6:3 NKJV
3 Or do you not know that as many of us as were baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into His death?

Water baptism is a public statement that I have died to the old way of sinful living.
Death doesn't mean ceasing to exist but separation. Spiritual death is separation from God, physical death is separation from your body. Death to sin is separation from sin.
2) Identified with Christ burial:
Romans 6:4 NKJV
4 Therefore we were buried with Him through baptism into death, that just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life.
3) Identified with Christ in His resurrection
Romans 6:5 NKJV
5 For if we have been united together in the likeness of His death, certainly we also shall be in the likeness of His resurrection,
Romans 6:5
Coming up out of the water is a symbol that I have new life.
Identified with Christ in His new way of living
Galatians 2:20 NKJV
20 I have been crucified with Christ; it is no longer I who live, but Christ lives in me; and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave Himself for me.
Why should we get baptized in water?
Galations 2:20
Its is one way to obey God
Its a public testimony that I have become a Christian
Its a another step in my spiritual grown
Water baptism does not make you a Christian. If someone is not a Christian when they get baptized then they go down a dry sinner and come up a wet sinner.
