Drink of Her Waters
Zion was the subject of the covenant in chapter 54.
Remember that last week we spoke about covenant.
In this chapter the subject changes from Zion to those who drink of her waters.

An Invitation to Abundant Life
55 Ho, everyone who thirsts,
come to the waters;
and you that have no money,
come, buy and eat!
Come, buy wine and milk
without money and without price.
Remember in the New Testament when God invites the chosen.

4 “Then he sent some more servants and said, ‘Tell those who have been invited that I have prepared my dinner: My oxen and fattened cattle have been butchered, and everything is ready.
Come to the wedding banquet.’
5 “But they paid no attention and went off—one to his field, another to his business.
6 The rest seized his servants, mistreated them and killed them.
7 The king was enraged.
He sent his army and destroyed those murderers and burned their city.
8 “Then he said to his servants, ‘The wedding banquet is ready, but those I invited did not deserve to come.
9 So go to the street corners and invite to the banquet anyone you find.’
In the previous chapter the story was about Zion, the mountain of God or Jerusalem.
But this chapter is about all those who come forth and drink from the abundance of God.
Listen carefully!
For the world is partaking of things that are not helpful.
Eat what is good.

3 Incline your ear, and come to me;
listen, so that you may live.
I will make with you an everlasting covenant,
my steadfast, sure love for David.
Isaiah is talking of things to come many years ahead of the actual event, is he not?
God says, come to me and drink of my everlasting water.
Isn’t this what Jesus later tells the Samaritan woman at the well.

10 Jesus answered her, “If you knew the gift of God, and who it is that is saying to you, ‘Give me a drink,’ you would have asked him, and he would have given you living water.”
In this passage of Isaiah, we need to understand that in previous passages the attention was on the destructive powers of waters that bring destruction; such as the flood waters that came with Noah.
But this passage is bringing forth waters that lift and sustain us.
Let us remember that these people are just now beginning to return out of captivity.
They have had to ration the substance given to them by their captors.
But now the Lord tells them that those who will listen He will give so that they may live.
We are then told that David has been made a witness to the people.
God is giving His people, those who will listen, a nation that was not theirs.

6 Seek the Lord while he may be found,
call upon him while he is near; Pardon and forgiveness is offered here, why?
Because God has compassion for those whop are lost.

7 let the wicked forsake their way,
and the unrighteous their thoughts;
let them return to the Lord, that he may have mercy on them,
and to our God, for he will abundantly pardon.
Do you know someone who might feel that they are past saving?
I have heard people say things like this, haven’t you?
I think this is what is evident in verse 8. (NRSV)
8 For my thoughts are not your thoughts,
nor are your ways my ways, says the Lord.
In our humanness, we may think that someone is past saving but God does not think like we think.

so are my ways higher than your ways
and my thoughts than your thoughts.
