This is the result of eating from the wrong tree.
We are hidden from his presence.

Hast thou eaten of the tree, whereof I commanded thee that thou shouldest not eat?

They were no longer dependant on God, but themselves.
Their eyes were opened and they knew like Gods, but they did not have the power or ability to live like one.*
