John 8:32-45

32 Then *you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free*."

33 They answered him, "We are Abraham's descendants and have never been slaves of anyone.

How can you say that we shall be set free?" 34 Jesus replied, "I tell you the truth, everyone who sins is a slave to sin.

35 Now a slave has no permanent place in the family, but a son belongs to it for ever.

*36 So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed*.

37 I know you are Abraham's descendants.

Yet you are ready to kill me, because you have no room for my word.

38 I am telling you what I have seen in the Father's presence, and you do what you have heard from your father."

39 "Abraham is our father," they answered.

"If you were Abraham's children," said Jesus, "then you would do the things Abraham did.

40 As it is, you are determined to kill me, a man who has told you the truth that I heard from God. Abraham did not do such things.

41 You are doing the things your own father does."

"We are not illegitimate children," they protested.

"The only Father we have is God himself."

42 Jesus said to them, "If God were your Father, you would love me, for I came from God and now am here.

I have not come on my own; but he sent me.

43 Why is my language not clear to you?

Because you are unable to hear what I say.

44 You belong to your father, the devil, and you want to carry out your father's desire.

He was a murderer from the beginning, not holding to the truth, for there is no truth in him.

When he lies, he speaks his native language, for he is a liar and the father of lies.

45 Yet because I tell the truth, you do not believe me! (NIV)

 

·         The truth will set you free!

Free from SIN. Sin is selfish bondage.

V:32-36

·         We do the works of our Father.

God is my father!

Then do the works of your Father.v:39-45

24 *No man can serve two masters*: for either *he will hate the o*ne, and love the other; or else he will hold to the one, and *despise the other*.

Ye cannot serve God and mammon.

·         God and… the devil, and anything else!

·         You mean I cannot serve people?

! Eph 6:5-8

5 Slaves, obey your earthly masters with respect and fear, and with sincerity of heart, just as you would obey Christ.

6 Obey them not only to win their favour when their eye is on you, but like slaves of Christ, doing the will of God from your heart.

*7 Serve wholeheartedly, as if you were serving the Lord, not men*, 8 because you know that the Lord will reward everyone for whatever good he does, whether he is slave or free.

Everyone will serve someone.

6 For we know that our old self was crucified with him so that the body of sin might be done away with, that we should no longer be slaves to sin-- 7 because anyone who has died has been freed from sin. 8 Now if we died with Christ, we believe that we will also live with him.

9 For we know that since Christ was raised from the dead, he cannot die again; death no longer has mastery over him.

10 The death he died, he died to sin once for all; *but the life he lives, he lives to God*.

11 *In the same way, count yourselves dead to sin but alive to God in Christ Jesus*.

12 Therefore do not let sin reign in your mortal body so that you obey its evil desires.

13 Do not offer the parts of your body to sin, as instruments of wickedness, *but rather offer yourselves to God*, as those who have been brought from death to life; and offer the parts of your body to him as instruments of righteousness.

! Rom 12:1-11

1 Therefore, I urge you, brothers, in view of God's mercy, to *offer your bodies as living sacrifices, holy and pleasing to God-- this is your spiritual act of worship*.

2 Do not conform any longer to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind.

Then you will be able to test and approve what God's will is-- his good, pleasing and perfect will.

3 For by the grace given me I say to every one of you: Do not think of yourself more highly than you ought, but rather think of yourself with sober judgment, in accordance with the measure of faith God has given you.

4 Just as each of us has one body with many members, *and these members do not all have the same function*, 5 so in Christ we who are many form one body, and each member belongs to all the others.

6 We have different gifts, according to the grace given us.

If a man's gift is prophesying, let him use it in proportion to his faith.

7 If it is serving, let him serve; if it is teaching, let him teach;

8 if it is encouraging, let him encourage; if it is contributing to the needs of others, let him give generously; if it is leadership, let him govern diligently; if it is showing mercy, let him do it cheerfully.

9 Love must be sincere.

Hate what is evil; cling to what is good.

10 Be devoted to one another in brotherly love.

Honour one another above yourselves.

11 Never be lacking in zeal, but keep your spiritual fervour, serving the Lord.
