amen All right. We are going to be in Matthew chapter 24 today.

And what's really kind of fun about this is we know we looked at last week the 7 woes and and all of that the kind of let up as he is so got this kind of semi captive audience. These folks have never really gone away from when they started questioning man in digging at him and and kind of trying to catch him in a trap is Jesus's teaching and then a verse 37 of chapter 23 everything shifts. They had that lament over Jerusalem or he's just weeping and wailing for the for the people who are called of God who have rejected God and are not understanding the fullness of the word and then he goes into In chapter 24 really chapter 24 through chapter 25. It's this prophecy. And he's prophesying some in X things. I was flabbergasted as I'm reading through it. Cuz I I forget description you forget things and shame on me. I will say that shame on me for forgetting when I read scripture that is not fix that I'm reconsidering my calling out of this sounds a lot like revelation will dummy Jesus go to tell John to write that stuff down. Of course. It sounds like Revelation random ring trends like these are these are things that he's starting to cut up reteach the disciples before he gives John the big the big vision of what's going to be happening as his glorious return comes and it's just this This beautiful thing that he's that he's teaching and so he starts out. in Matthew chapter 24 with his prophecies in time prophecies and church don't be afraid of the end of time. For us as Believers in Jesus Christ, the end of time is the beginning of Eternity. We should look forward to it and it should be an exciting moment for us. Don't be afraid of it too often. I think we've allowed beard enter into that and it shouldn't as Jesus's teaching here. Yes, there are some tough things that we're going to see any teaching hard things that are going to be difficulties man. What happens afterward?

Don't worry about the stuff. We went through right so don't be afraid when we look at these things. These are these are wonderful things at that Usher at a time where we get to spend eternity with our Lord and be aware of of that sort of mindset before we get into the word. Let's go ahead and have a word of Prayer. And y'all just say a little prayer for me than my throat holds out my voice keeps up. I've had the crud. I was telling refill. I'm not halfway. Well, I'm about 5/8. Well, I'm getting there but but I'm I'm I'm glad to have spring break to rest and recoup. So be praying for me that just we can hold up and then be able to finish out what God is calling us to say and do here today Father in Heaven. I thank you so much for your word. I think you for the opportunity to to bring it and a share what you've put on my heart father. I pray that it's not me. I pray that it's all you. All right. I'm put aside and that you shine forth father. I pray that as we look at your word. We see how how you've taught us about the Glorious coming of Christ and what that'll be like that you would just encourage Us in that they would keep us Seeking you in that father. I pray that is we we do look this way. We are convicted by your word is is here to the guide us and to change us into make a SECU deeper and we pray that specifically that that that would happen. Father we ask that you would just continue to bless this congregation. I know where we're send because there's a lot of folks out sick today. We pray that those folks would be healed and be able to recover as well as bless us all to Jesus name. Amen. Two chapter 24 Matthew Jesus starts out with some in time prophecy and inverses 1 and 2. One of the first things he talks about is the destruction of the temple Jerusalem and this At this point in time, I think the Jewish leaders and kind of had this arrogance about them that they didn't think of it ever happen. Again Solomon's Temple have been destroyed once during the Babylonian captivity and they've been taken away and I've been brought back at the temple was rebuilt those of us that study through Ezra Nehemiah. We got to read about all of that and have that history took place in the second temple.

Then there was the Third herod's Temple that we're in now and so this is going to be destroyed. They just kind of it's not going to happen again. Well, it did happen 7180 the Romans came back through and said we're tired of this y'all been doing your own thing. We're cracking down and then 71 a b the Jewish temple was destroyed in Jerusalem, and it's not been built since it is is gone the new temp

What questions about whether or not it will be a physical Temple or spiritual Temple. Jesus is ushering in a kingdom. That would be a spiritual Kingdom. It's there's a lot of questions about that. I'm not going to get into that. I don't have that kind of time today. Y'all don't have that kind of patience today to get into that in one sermon, but there's a lot of that they're little verses 3 through 14. Jesus starts kind of just giving the disciples about the teaching about the signs of the end of the age.

False teachers Wars rumors of wars famines earthquakes people posing as Christ who are not in Jesus tells the disciples. I love that do not be alarmed or shocked by it expected. It shouldn't well it is shocking that somebody would you have the gall to imitate God? It shouldn't shock us that people would do that.

Jesus said it's going to happen. It all takes place to fulfill prophecy. And and then he reminds the disciples that the ones who endure who stay firm in the faith of those will be saved and the gospel the true gospel will be preached throughout the whole world. I didn't 15 through 28. Talks about the tribulation that followers of Christ will endure in this is really a continuation of what happens in in verses 3 through 14. This section is tough. Because you start reading about some of these he says he talks about desolation in an abandonment and Abominations happening and people running and hiding in the mountains and and house is being prejudiced. It's a horrible tribulation that he kind of the rights and he speaks about here, but he reminds the disciples.

But he's going to return and he's predicting his death in his burial and resurrection and it but his return is what he's talking about here and how important that is. I'm a little drunk here at 3029 through 31. It's kind of a a glimpse of what it will look like when Jesus returns just a little glimpse of what that day of actual returning the look like the darkness of the Sun and in the mood and how everything's going to happen in just everybody will begin to mourn and weep and wail and Jesus is coming back. That's that's the big thing there.

Rihanna vs. 32 through 35 he begins to kind of teach about the suddenness of it all. And uses this fig tree example and you grew up in the Midwest. This Victory example makes very little sense to us right now. I don't know. I don't know that I've ever seen a fig tree. I mean or not and I've traveled some places, but I don't know that I've ever seen a fig tree I got I don't my grandma lives in Phoenix and I got date palms that are kind of like a fig tree but they're not quite the same these fig trees. Is Jesus's describing it here? What's interesting about them is he's talking about how he looks at the tree and there's no fruit on it and there and there's all this big trees apparently as they start to leave out. They also produce their fruit at the same time. That's unusual. We grew up in the midwest, you know, we don't get oak trees don't produce acorns at the same time. They're producing leaves, right? We don't see apple trees producing apples when they're producing leaves in the spring but is a fig tree would do that and he said that's that's kind of is all this is going to happen at once. This is going to be in all of the sudden kind of thing and that's what leads us into verses 36 through the end of the chapter.

And Jesus is teaching here and he says in verse 36 but concerning that day and hour. No one knows not even the angels of Heaven nor the son. but the father only browse were the days of Noah so will be the coming of the son of man. Present those days before the flood there were they were eating and drinking and marrying and giving marriage until the day when Noah entered into the ark and they were unaware until the flood came and swept them all away. So will be the coming of man. Two men will be in the field and one will be taken one. Left two women will be grinding at the Mill one will be taken and one will be left there for stay awake.

But you do not know what day your lord is coming. But know this. But that if the Master of the House had known and what part of the night the thief was coming he would have stayed awake and would not have let his house be broken into. Therefore you must also be ready for the son of man is coming at an hour. You do not expect.

Who then is the faithful and wise servant whom his master has set over his household to give them their food at the proper time? Blessed is that servant whom the master will find doing will find so doing when he comes truly. I say to you. He will set him over all his possessions. But that Wicked servant test him. My master is delayed says himself. My master is delayed and begins to beat his fellow servants and eats and drinks with drunkards. The master of that circle come out on that on a day when he does not expect him and an hour. He does not know any will cut him in pieces and put him with the Hypocrites and that place there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.

Oh, man.

So here we come to verse 36. I love how Jesus starts off saying but concerning the day in the hour at Jesus fully God fully man. So he's experiencing human nature and he understands human nature. Well enough to know that we like specific times right Sunday morning Bible study starts at 9:30. Right worship starts at 10:45, right? We got to get out by noon so we can beat the Methodist to to the Mexican restaurant or whatever those things we like having specific times and he knows that and any But here's the thing about knowing the specific time the specific time of something doesn't teaches perseverance. I thought of that knowing that specific time doesn't teaches perseverance right for me personally. I kind of know that knowing the specific time sometimes teaches procrastination. Rather than perseverance. I can put it off. I can put it off. I got older. I got 10 minutes. Maybe I shouldn't put it off, right? This is kind of how human nature tends to work. Jesus knew that he's not denying any of that. She sometimes knowing the specific time gives a false sense of being okay with following the distractions around us rather than staying on task. Jesus is calling us to stay on.

Jesus is always calling us to stay on task for him. And we got to look for that. What is the task? We're going to get to it. I'm going to look at how that staying on task is important. It continues on in his teaching and he reminds us that no one but the father knows now. All right. God is Father God his son got his holy spirit.

But he's one God the Lord. Our God is one God the Shema is is the Jewish people would say that's that's the Declaration of who God is and and we know this is one but yet, he's Triune at the same time, right and it's not like he was God the father in the Old Testament then God the son in the New Testament. And now that we're beyond that he's got the Holy Spirit. No, he's still God the Father Son and Holy Spirit all at once all the time, but there's no division among him yet. He can hide Secrets. I don't know if that's even the right word from the Son and the Holy Spirit.

So here they are God is father son. Holy Spirit three distinct persons within the same God who are all present at the exact same time and there is this. Secret about when Jesus is returning now. It's not a secret because God hides things from us. It's not like this is this is that sort of thing. It's a secret because it glorifies God to have some things mysterious, but only he knows Right, we don't think about that very often conversation and small group came up today the third all these Mysteries within scripture. And it's honestly merciful of God to not share those Mysteries with us. Is our little our little brains can't handle that and it's Mercy that keeps us from understanding some of those Mysteries because we couldn't handle it.

That glorifies God to be mysterious. We only said God acts in mysterious ways. Yeah, we want to know those Mysteries don't we were like Columbo one more thing, you know, we what are we want to try to figure out what's happening? We want to dig in deep, but it's not always widest there to glorify him. And so we have to watch this. The second coming of Christ is mysterious and man, will it glorify God right and it's just so exciting to think about that. Jesus is coming on in the any's Compares this the second teaching or the second coming. Sorry. That's second teaching the second coming one teaching scripture. All right, don't give that up. But he compares the second coming to Noah's flood. the eye people the time and know what we're just going about their everyday lives.

And doing their everyday things going to work and coming home from work getting married having kids and her daughters off to get married sooner kids just everyday regular things. And then it just kind of happened to look up and notice. There's water coming out of the sky for the first time in history. And now it's up to their ankles and now it's up to their knees and now they're Swept Away. It's that kind of a sudden thing that they didn't they didn't know the world did not know Noah new. I don't know how you can Miss A 600-foot Long Boat in the man's backyard, but no one knew. He was prepared.

The same things going to happen with the second coming people are going to be taken completely by surprise just as they were with the flood in Noah's time when Jesus returns people will be like what just happened. Got what it's going to nobody's going to it's going to be a shock. Everybody will be going about their everyday beaut business and people be completely caught off guard. And that's why verse 42 is so important in Jesus says therefore stay awake. Stay awake as followers of Jesus Christ. We should be prepared for the second coming at all times now. This isn't preparedness. Like we think of preparedness. This isn't having your bunker having a shelter having your stockpile food for the tribulation. That's not what preparedness is here. That's not what staying awake is here preparedness here.

Is having our hearts and our lives ready for Jesus Christ to come back at any moment. We still are never going to know the specific time. But we should not be worried about it, and we should be excited that it's happening, but we should have our hearts and our lives prepared. We should live for Jesus Christ day in day out like he's coming back at 3. When I clock out from work, I'm going to hit that time clock and he's going to want to hear a trumpet. I should be living that way. That's what he saying by stay awake and be prepared.

Verse 43 Jesus goes into to talking about how staying awake by describing the Master of the House who plans to Catch a Thief in the act right? This is this is Villa Vigilant if that word if I can be careful, this is Vigilance and perseverance right? Here. He is. This guy staying awake to catch the thief he's he's watching for it. He's looking for he's anticipating. It doesn't know when it's going to happen. Is perseverance in that it was hard to stay awake for a long time. I gave it up a long time ago. I can't do it anymore. And I hit all these overnighters and all-nighters and I'm old for that stuff. It doesn't happen anymore.

Become a man of a certain age in which you know 9 bedtime sounds really good on a Friday night sometimes and there's some perseverance and some Villa gilenson staying up its hard for me. And so he's telling me this is as a believer in Christ that I should be vigilant I should persevere. And in where that is at. So we are being called to persevere and to be vigilant and our study of the word and persevering and be vigilant in our relationship of Jesus Christ to grow in all of that. That's how we're preparing for the second coming.

Verse 44 he calls us and I love this the vert for be ready.

There for you also must be ready. So we were ready when we pray. We are ready when we study we are ready when we Fellowship. We are ready when we serve and we are ready when we share. Think about that when we pray we should be praying for one another and we should be praying for our own holiness. To be ready for when Christ returns right pressure be so much more than just praying for the sick and infirm not saying that we are not called to pray for the sick. And infirm we are. But are we praying for those who are spiritually sick and spiritually infirmed as much as we are praying for those who are physically sick and physically infirmed church. If we're not we're missing part of this a big part of it. I'm sick. I don't feel well, I'll get better. And I have Jesus. I'm okay. Those were spiritually sick and spiritually infirmed. They don't get better without Jesus. Their eternity as hell.

We're praying for believers who are sick so they can go on being okay, but we're not praying for those who aren't Believers or missing it. I'm missing it all together.

Enterprise one of the praying for a Holiness we need to be praying for the Lost around us. We need to be praying for ourselves to stay the course of Christ. I hear it's a lot like praying for me. Will you should Sam of course or Jesus Christ is tough. It is hard I fail and I didn't get out of bed this morning until I found I already failed. It's that easy to just miss it and I'm laying there I don't feel right. I guess I got to preach and I'm not okay. I got this i got this I can do this right I had to stay in the course is hard.

We need to be praying that our studies of the word of God change our lives and I just changed our lives then they changed our lives than there for our studies change our actions.

There's a change your life and there's not a change in how we Act was there really a change in our life. Don't think so.

We need to study Church being in the word is so important. I'm I can give you a tidbit today. And that's it.

This is a lecture. I'm a teacher. I've studied how teaching works. This is a lecture a sermon is election. Now, they can be powerful lectures. I'm not saying they're not but we understand about how the human mind works and learns is it lecture is the least effective form of study?

If you're in church every Sunday. Free year that means you're getting 52 lectures. A year, that's it. I'm about 35 to 40 minutes at a time. That's really not a whole lot of. time in the word and then it's not just not a whole lot of time in the word. It's also a whole lot of not time not a whole lot of time in the word of the least effective manner in which you learned.

We need to study you need to be in the word on your own you need to be digging deep. You need to be Iron sharpening iron study with other people digging into the word and we need to study not for the sake of Stalin's sake right? Sometimes it's fun to just have a bunch of knowledge. Like I got a bunch of useless stuff up here. That's all it's ever going to do is maybe give me to the second round in the Jeopardy Jeopardy Tournament. I don't even know why it's there but it's there and I've tried out for Jeopardy couple times and I felt dumb after I did it. So studying for knowledge sake has done me no good. You're that it does me no good to study for just a sec. I have a knowledge. I need to study to build a closer relationship with God. This is his word. This is how we intimately know the God created in loves us. And we started to know him better. This is his love letter to his people.

How do you know the God who loves you?

Is not only see the God created us in the God who loves us. He's the guy who redeems us. from ourselves you need to do that.

We are to fellowship with one another to be in our preparedness now. It's hard to hear Baptist people. The fellowship does not mean to pitch in. All right, I know. I know right but it means being a part of one another's lives. I didn't mean to really digging deep. It means having Community with one another that's what we're talking about with Fellowship. This is a perk in some way is a perk of being a part of other believers lives is that we do get to have meals together. That's nice cuz cuz that is an intimate time when people talk and have conversation and then I can have that conversation about God, but that's the part that's fellowships important. Our conversation should all steer is closer to a fellowship in a relationship with God right? They should be us holding each other accountable Brothers holding each other accountable sisters challenging one another

so that they can grow in the Lord. That's Fellowship. It happens over a meal. Is over a cup of coffee? It happens on a long trip into drive. It can happen anyplace happens. Everytime Believers should be meeting with one another or conversation should be Godly and steered towards godliness and our own growth in God.

We prepare by serving. I listen to podcasts and one of my favorite ones I've been listening to is called Revitalize and replant and is put on by the North American Mission board. These guys have been seeing these videos for as they come in and start worship everyday. It's about small churches in small communities that are struggling to keep afloat, honestly and one of the things that they say that is so important is we forget as Believers in Christ that church we are here for the community the community is not here for us. You're the difference in that the we are here for the community. We should never look at the community is being here for us. We are called to be servants right? We are to help meet the felt physical needs of people who need that Jesus did that 5,000 people he make me fat. Lenny preached All right, we do these things. We do these things because that is the doorway to presenting the gospel that were called to share. I think we sometimes forget that that if there's somebody's hurting Basically if they're hurting emotionally and we just start preaching the gospel Adam, they're already tuned out. Butterfree somebody's hurting physically and we can help that physical hurt. That's open the door for us to share the Gospel of Jesus Christ if somebody is hurting emotionally and all we do is sit and cry with them. We've opened the door to present the Gospel of Jesus Christ. To both and you kind of do both. And in this is our purpose, right? This is this is our purpose that we've been calling the sermon series from the greatest commandment to the Great Commission. And in those things we see these these two things. We see God's will for our lives. I work with young people a long time. Nnn Leah gambill a test of this what's God's will for my life? Oh my word. Love the Lord your God with all your heart soul and mind love your neighbor as yourself go. Ye therefore into all the nations baptizing to making them disciples and fall commanding them to follow the the ways of Jesus Christ. That's it. That's God's will for your life. It's not that hard. Do those things whatever else you do to earn money to keep a roof over your head put clothes on your body. a secondary It's secondary. We forget that America has taught us that that's primary. That's secondary. Don't forget that secondary. That's God's will for your life. If you're a believer in Jesus Christ, that's it.

These are the things that we are called to this is your greater purpose. Love the Lord with all your heart mind and strength. We're to love our neighbors as ourselves. We're To Go Make Disciples of all the nations teaching them to observe the teachings of commands of Christ. Done. That's what we're called to do. And it's amazing to me. That when I look at this and I live out the greatest commandment. But I live that out when I love the Lord my God of all my heart soul and mind when I when I love my neighbor as myself when I show that I'm living that I'm acting that out. how easy then the Great Commission becomes that door is is just busted open for the other parts come through. Nobody wants to hear the gospel from a grouchy old crank. That's why there are days I have to shut up. I know this.

People will see that there's something different about us as Believers in Christ when we eat when we do the great commandment. And we will they will they will be receptive to what we did have to say in the Great Commission.

You're the only thing church it's the job of the Holy Spirit to convict him. Not ours.

not ours It is our job to always be proclaiming the truth of the Gospel.

That is our job.

Bruce 45 Jesus starts to shift gears a little bit

search to tell it what happens.

About this wise and Faithful Servants of God's right service servant is blessed for doing what is right and being faithful even when the master is away right now the master feels away.

Jesus isn't here anymore. The disciples had that the apostles had that he's not here anymore.

to the servant represents a real true follower of Jesus Christ in this somebody who is committed in sold-out one who lives out the greatest commandment and one who lives out the greatest the Great Commission a servant cares for the things of God and make sure that the whole house is in order for the Master's return.

How sad would it be to see a house in disorder when you come back out? I got hired a couple times as a summer job while I was a single teacher to house-sit over the summer. It's a live in somebody else's house and take care of it. It's kind of a fun Gig if you can get it like it is they had a hot tub and had all sorts of neat stuff right I had to do is make sure the house didn't fall apart. Then I thought about that in that first night that a big summer thunderstorm rolled through I can hear the train branches in the neighborhood snapping. I started getting worried about is this house going to be okay when they come back in 2 months?

Christian don't let the things of God be like that house. Don't let the house of God be in disarray. Now. The house of God is Not these for brick walls House of God is the church doing things for Jesus Christ in the community that they've been given. Don't let it be in a matter where it is not in order when he returns. We can't. verse 47 shows what happens to the wicked and untrustworthy servant let the house become out of order this servant represents the false Disciples of Christ write someone who may be among true followers, but his heart doesn't live the great commandment in the Great Commission these false followers of Jesus Christ are going to be exposed and when you look at what happens

in verse 51

We should have God's judgment will be Swift and it will be severe. Cut into little pieces and thrown into the pit.

And there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.

tough

We think about this stuff. We think about what Jesus is teaching here. We think about the enormity of it all there's some takeaways. That we should look from this passage. 1 Jesus return will feel delayed to us. I'm always amazed when I read through scripture, especially the letters of Paul. Paul says in his letters numerous times. He's living in the last days. He feels like it's already too. He's wondering why Jesus hasn't come back as he's writing the letter to the Romans. He sees it then it feels like Jesus is taking forever to come back to us.

It's okay. Delayed gratification is not a bad thing. Right it is it build should build excitement for us. It should build desire for us. It's going to feel delayed but understand this just because it's delayed doesn't mean it's not happening this point to or take away number to hear is that it is an inevitable return and it will be sudden. Right. No one knows the time of the day at the time and day. We don't know the hour in the moment. But it is inevitable. He is coming back do not buy into anybody who says that he's not.

It's false is coming back and when he does come back. Will know and it will be all of the sudden.

In the third take away here you think about is this? And that return God's judgment will be swift. It will be severe and it will be irreversible.

It's not going to change.

Is final judge in Arbiter. There's no plea agreement.

There there is no.

Second chance it is his there. You can't appeal. a second trial before God irreversible

Too because of these things Christian should long and desire for the return of the Lord.

We we forget that this will be the most joyous experience when Jesus returns us. This will be the most joyous experience. We will ever have here on Earth.

That's hard to believe that's hard for me to sink into like.

I think about wedding day and how joyous that was. And in Jesus return is going to be bigger than that. No offense baby, but that's how it is. And I'm glad she's shaking that saying yeah. Hebron agreement on that it'll be the most joyous experience will ever have here on Earth. The folks it will be the most terrifying thing that will ever happen to our lost friends.

hear that will be the most terrifying thing that will ever happen to those who are lost who don't have Jesus Christ.

This is why we who believe in Jesus Christ. We who call ourselves followers of Christ we We have to have perseverance and we have to have vigilance. This is why.

We need to persevere and praying studying serving fellowshipping. We have got to be vigilant in the sharing of the Gospel truth of Jesus Christ. have to be

people need to hear the gospel got to have it. And there is an urgency to our Great Commission call because we don't know the time. We don't know the date. We don't know those things and that's why there's this urgency in it. There is a necessity. Target commission call people need Jesus. This is much as you and I need Jesus. Those who are lost need Jesus Christ. There's that necessity in that. People need Jesus. We are his Messengers. And if we are not taking that word out. We are not doing what we've been called to do.

Today is as we think about our time or call of action our invitation or whatever. Whatever we want to call. This is where you respond to the word.

Some some questions you need to ask. First one is s am. I looking forward to Christ return my looking for it. And then am I looking forward to it? Am I paying attention to what's around me? smart pay attention I'll probably like Paul was two thousand years ago. Yeah any minute now Maranatha come Lord Jesus bring it, but I got to be looking for. Second thing to ask myself and this one stuff. Am I being faithful to serve him while he is delayed?

Yeah, am I being faithful to serve him while he's being delayed? And I really really digging into sir Jesus Christ. 3 a my vigilance to share the gospel with those who need to know him.

the fourth one

I am not doing these things. Why am I not asking God to change me so that I am

that one might be the hardest one for us to ask him pray.

Be honest. I got hit and I'm writing a sermon out and I'm supposed to preaching to you and God is kicking my tail all week long on this. I'm brother easels laughing cuz 50 years of ministry. He's been beat over got over head with his head with God's baseball bat to and he's writing his own sermons. I know how it works. It's okay to get beat up by the word of God song as you come back and say fix me change me. I'm broken. I need a gun. That's where I'm at.

I don't know how honestly I can answer those questions some days. I really looking forward to it or is it give me a little bit of the heebie-jeebies?

Am I being faithful to serve?

by my scale or God scale am I being faithful to Sir? Am I being vigilant and sharing the gospel with those who need to know him again my scale or guidance scale?

I know I'm going to get on my hands and knees in a minute. I'm going to ask God change me so that I am those.

My courage Matias to do the same. abide with me

Father we come to you right now knowing that your return is going to be glorious and spectacular. We say it.

We sometimes failed live it.

All right, I got to ask myself. Am I really looking for your return? Am I looking for the the coming of Christ in and what that means for us? Am I looking at really seeing Jesus coming back as the warrior king? He will be.

By being faithful to serve.

While you're delayed in that.
