Our goal in this life should be to bring glory to God.
Where that starts is in the home.
First glorify God by treating your spouse the way that God commands us to.
Next, you glorify God by raising your children the way that God commands you.
We can fool people when we are in public, are families are the ones who see who we really are.
With our families we have the opportunity to glorify God and hopefully our kids will follow in our footsteps, or to live a life of hypocrisy and possibly destroy our families in the process.
What does this teach us about God?
As Jonathan Edawards would say.
What’s the theology in this passage.
Jesus Demonstrated Obedience
Jesus Obeys and submitted to His parents.
Before we can clarify that more we need to look at a Romans 8:15
With God we do not a spirit of slavery but adoption.
He is now our Father and one whom we can approach saying “ABBA!!” That is daddy!!
With that in our minds, that God is our daddy, our Father we come to the passage.
He does not provoke
There is a worldview that believes God has given us rules because He doesn’t want us to have fun.
He makes the rules to goad us into breaking them.
This says God doesn’t provoke, which means the things that He does he has a purpose behind it.
He disciplines us
He disciplines us to give us wisdom.
Children Honor
When you honor your parents you honor God.
You Honor by obeying your parents.
Obey
If a child obeyed their parents, the hope is to see that the child will live the way that the parents lived.
Disobedience is named with all these other sins.
The respect that children are to give to their parents is essential for a well-ordered society, for the stability of the home, and also for the development of discipline and character in children.
When the Children are disobedient, order in the house breaks down and later order in society breaks down
You have children growing up into adults that believe that they can do what they want with no repercussions.....and that they should be catered to.
Discipline
If you love your child, you will correct them.
Our goal should be to raise our kids, not cater to them.
We want them to grow up honoring the parents and loving God…but that takes instruction.
Fathers, Parent Correctly
Fathers
This message is the same for mothers, however he addresses fathers, why?
You will be held accountable to God for raising your family.
It’s a great responsibility that the way that God has called us to address Him is the the same way that your children address you.
How you parent your kids will impact the way that your kids view God the Father.
Do not provoke
Doesn’t mean don’t let your child get mad at you, this happens whenever we discipline.
Ways we provoke
Being unjustly critical
We tend to be more critical of our kids than others kids, don’t expect them to hit a standard that even Jesus would have a hard time meeting.
They want and need your praise for the things that they do well.
Yes their is always room for improvement, but praise the things that they are doing well.
Showing favoritism between your kids
Never ever show favoritism
Speaking harshly
We can be stern, but not using words or actions that make them feel like you dislike them or hate them.
Re-assure them that you are disappointed with their behavior, but you still love them.
Comparing your children to one another
“little Billy never did that”
Being abusive
Children need discipline, but some parents go to the other end of the spectrum where it becomes abuse.
Discipline should be done out of love.
Instruction
This also shows us the heart of God, His desire is to instruct us about who He is, how to please Him
As parents we are to do the same things with our kids.
We are to be training our kids, not to be dependent on us, but to be godly men and women that will soon have their own houses and be providing for their own famility
Raise them not to be dependent on you, but to leave the house and bring glory to God with the way they live.
The Parent Child relationship to a degree will not last
The marriage relationship was meant to last, the parent/child to a degree will dissolve.
We have this backwards.
“Daddy and mommy aren’t going to be married anymore, but you will always be my little boy.”
Our goal should be to raise our kids to have a relationship with Jesus, raise them to make an impact for Him, then release them into the world!!
Archery analogy
Ways to train up your child
A bible saturated home
Do you talk about God and the bible when you are home.
Do they hear about God.

They need to know and see that prayer is important.
Teach them how to pray.
Teach them to be thankful
When God does something amazing, praise God for it.
Point out that it is from Him.
A well rounded view of God
They need to know who God is.
More than just He is love, but what are His other attributes.
When they have questions, answer them or study/ask others to find the correct answer.
