This study is focused on the main events of Nehemiah’s life.
A good outline of the book of Nehemiah will include main events of the book of Nehemiah… this is different.

His father was Hacaliah (1:1) he had a brother named Hanani (1:2)
His father was Hacaliah (1:1) he had a brother named Hanani (1:2)
2. Birth:
He probably was born and grew up in Persia with Persian culture
Nehemiah would have been born during or after Zerubbabel ministry (535-515; first return & rebuilding Temple)
Based on the fact that Nehemiah’s life parallels Zerubabbel.... Nehemiah probably thought of Zerubabbel as a childhood hero.
3. Nehemiah lived in Susa, Persia (Shushan (in Esther).
Modern Day Iran
While growing up Nehemiah most have loved hearing about Ezra’s Ministry (458-456; second return, reform people,
Eventually Nehemiah will work with Ezra
4. Most of what we read about Nehemiah is during Persian King Artaxerxes first (465-424 bc)

Nehemiah held the distinguished position of the king’s cupbearer (445 BC) ()

Nehemiah would taste test the 5 star luxury food and drinks.
This position stood between the king and death.
If someone tried to poison the king Nehemiah would have been dead.
(He lived each day knowing he can die breakfast, lunch, dinner, or snack.)
Even though to us this seems like a very low position it was not because this was a position of trust from the King himself and for the most part he was just eating really good food.
During this time Nehemiah hears about the condition of Jerusalem from Hanani.
Nehemiah hears about the state of Jerusalem.
Nehemiah hears about the state of Jerusalem.

Nehemiah is sent by the Persian King to help rebuild Jerusalem. (Nehemiah 2:9-20)

During this time Nehemiah is accompanied with other Jews returning from Persian to Jerusalem.

In less then 2 months Nehemiah starts to rebuild wall despite harassment from enemies. ()

Nehemiah remains a Persian governor of Jerusalem for next 12 years (445-433 BC) (Nehemiah 4-12)

Enemies try to destroy the work Nehemiah with a surprise attack. Nehemiah prays and organizes a defense ()
Nehemiah solves other issues ()
Wall is completed ()
Wall is guarded ()
Leading Congregation to repentance
Nehemiah is working on developing Jerusalem and leading people to God with Ezra ()

Nehemiah returns to work for King in Persia

Somewhere between chapter 12 &13

Nehemiah returns to Jerusalem as Persian Governor a second time (Nehemiah 13:4-31)

During this time Nehemiah again speaking to people about keeping God’s Law.

At some point during all of this Nehemiah records the final events of the OT that we read in the book Nehemiah.

Nehemiah is Cupbearer

LIFE OF NEHEMIAH

Nehemiah was cupbearer to the King Artaxerxes and in order to be cupbearer the king would only select someone who is wise, discreet, and consistently honest and trustworthy. Also based on this position we can assume he was very smart, and emotionally mature.
