John 5:1–9 NKJV
1 After this there was a feast of the Jews, and Jesus went up to Jerusalem. 2 Now there is in Jerusalem by the Sheep Gate a pool, which is called in Hebrew, Bethesda, having five porches. 3 In these lay a great multitude of sick people, blind, lame, paralyzed, waiting for the moving of the water. 4 For an angel went down at a certain time into the pool and stirred up the water; then whoever stepped in first, after the stirring of the water, was made well of whatever disease he had. 5 Now a certain man was there who had an infirmity thirty-eight years. 6 When Jesus saw him lying there, and knew that he already had been in that condition a long time, He said to him, “Do you want to be made well?” 7 The sick man answered Him, “Sir, I have no man to put me into the pool when the water is stirred up; but while I am coming, another steps down before me.” 8 Jesus said to him, “Rise, take up your bed and walk.” 9 And immediately the man was made well, took up his bed, and walked. And that day was the Sabbath.

What Stops People from moving closer to the Waters?

1st Answer is Pride.
Proverbs 16:18 ESV
18 Pride goes before destruction, and a haughty spirit before a fall.
Proverbs 11:2 ESV
2 When pride comes, then comes disgrace, but with the humble is wisdom.
Satan was kicked out of Heaven because of his Pride
Isaiah 14:12–15 NLT
12 “How you are fallen from heaven, O shining star, son of the morning! You have been thrown down to the earth, you who destroyed the nations of the world. 13 For you said to yourself, ‘I will ascend to heaven and set my throne above God’s stars. I will preside on the mountain of the gods far away in the north. 14 I will climb to the highest heavens and be like the Most High.’ 15 Instead, you will be brought down to the place of the dead, down to its lowest depths.

2nd Answer is Fear.

2 Timothy 1:7 NKJV
7 For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind.

3rd Answer is Material Things.

Luke 12:15 NKJV
15 And He said to them, “Take heed and beware of covetousness, for one’s life does not consist in the abundance of the things he possesses.”
1 John 2:16–17 NKJV
16 For all that is in the world—the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life—is not of the Father but is of the world. 17 And the world is passing away, and the lust of it; but he who does the will of God abides forever.

4th Answer is Bondage

2 Corinthians 4:4 NLT
4 Satan, who is the god of this world, has blinded the minds of those who don’t believe. They are unable to see the glorious light of the Good News. They don’t understand this message about the glory of Christ, who is the exact likeness of God.
(I call it spiritual crippleness)
The man was cripple physically but also spiritually.
Ill talk again about the passage for a minute.
As people are waiting for the moving of the water, The Living Water steps on the scene. Jesus is the Living water!

How do we know that Jesus is the living water?

John 4:14 NKJV
14 but whoever drinks of the water that I shall give him will never thirst. But the water that I shall give him will become in him a fountain of water springing up into everlasting life.”
John 7:38 NIV
38 Whoever believes in me, as Scripture has said, rivers of living water will flow from within them.”
Jesus sees him and knows how long he has been in his situation and he poses the same question to you today (Do you want to be made well?)

Why did he ask the man did he want to be healed?

Isn't it obvious, this should be a no brainer, he been in his predicament for 38 years. So why Jesus ask that question? Answer- Jesus wanted to know if he wanted to be healed....
Ill talk a few minutes
Jesus didn't get the desired answer but I love the relentless of Jesus! He goes beyond the call of duty to help us.
He tells the man to take up his mat and walk!
He could have told the man to just get up and walk but instead he told him to take up his mat and walk? Why? Answer- He knew if he would have left the mat, when times got rough, he would revert back to the mat!
Jesus told the man to pick up his mat and get rid of it! What Mat is holding you back from getting your breakthrough this morning? Whatever your mat is, bring it to the Alter and lay it down.
