Acts 4:1–22 ESV
1 And as they were speaking to the people, the priests and the captain of the temple and the Sadducees came upon them, 2 greatly annoyed because they were teaching the people and proclaiming in Jesus the resurrection from the dead. 3 And they arrested them and put them in custody until the next day, for it was already evening. 4 But many of those who had heard the word believed, and the number of the men came to about five thousand. 5 On the next day their rulers and elders and scribes gathered together in Jerusalem, 6 with Annas the high priest and Caiaphas and John and Alexander, and all who were of the high-priestly family. 7 And when they had set them in the midst, they inquired, “By what power or by what name did you do this?” 8 Then Peter, filled with the Holy Spirit, said to them, “Rulers of the people and elders, 9 if we are being examined today concerning a good deed done to a crippled man, by what means this man has been healed, 10 let it be known to all of you and to all the people of Israel that by the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, whom you crucified, whom God raised from the dead—by him this man is standing before you well. 11 This Jesus is the stone that was rejected by you, the builders, which has become the cornerstone. 12 And there is salvation in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given among men by which we must be saved.” 13 Now when they saw the boldness of Peter and John, and perceived that they were uneducated, common men, they were astonished. And they recognized that they had been with Jesus. 14 But seeing the man who was healed standing beside them, they had nothing to say in opposition. 15 But when they had commanded them to leave the council, they conferred with one another, 16 saying, “What shall we do with these men? For that a notable sign has been performed through them is evident to all the inhabitants of Jerusalem, and we cannot deny it. 17 But in order that it may spread no further among the people, let us warn them to speak no more to anyone in this name.” 18 So they called them and charged them not to speak or teach at all in the name of Jesus. 19 But Peter and John answered them, “Whether it is right in the sight of God to listen to you rather than to God, you must judge, 20 for we cannot but speak of what we have seen and heard.” 21 And when they had further threatened them, they let them go, finding no way to punish them, because of the people, for all were praising God for what had happened. 22 For the man on whom this sign of healing was performed was more than forty years old.

Ac
acts4.1-12
In this text today we have what is one of the most distinctive Points of the Gospel of Jesus Christ. One of the most controversial ideas in Christianity today! One of the five Solas and the Basis for the doctrine of Salvation. CHRIST ALONE!
To be clear we believe that Salvation comes through Christ Alone, and that we do not contribute to that Salvation. Simply put - The Gospel = Jesus+ nothing
Where do we get this idea? One of of the key passages is before us in the text today and it is the big Idea for us today. But before we look at it we need to understand some things here.
Remember this scene is all started by Peter and John going to the temple to pray for the evening prayer, when they encounter a lame man and heal him in Jesus name. The Lame man begins to run and jump around the temple praising God which of course causes a big scene. It would seems as though Peter and John have a captive audience who cannot concentrate on their evening prayers. Peter preaches to them that repentance and Faith in the resurrected Christ will save them from their sins.
In the text today we witness an arrest and a trial. It is a scene that is tense and it is a foundation for what God is doing in Jerusalem through his people. As we look at this today, I want you to try to understand the context of what a trial looks like in order to understand what one of the most foundational statements to our Faith means.
Acts 4:1–4 ESV
1 And as they were speaking to the people, the priests and the captain of the temple and the Sadducees came upon them, 2 greatly annoyed because they were teaching the people and proclaiming in Jesus the resurrection from the dead. 3 And they arrested them and put them in custody until the next day, for it was already evening. 4 But many of those who had heard the word believed, and the number of the men came to about five thousand.

The Arrest

This is the arrest of Peter and John. We notice that they are speaking to the people when all of the sudden the authorities of the temple come upon them… And they are not happy...
Why are they so upset? isn’t this a good thing that this lame man has been healed? All the people are marveling in wonder at the greatness and graciousness of God. If there is any place where people should be in Awe of God, you think it would be in the temple. Why are they so mad?
In order to understand this we must first understand who the key players are here. This is where study of the culture and history comes in handy when trying to understand the Bible. When we don’t take the time to learn about the Context of scripture it becomes too easy to make it all about us… If we aren’t careful with scripture it becomes about us and we lose an understanding of who God is and how he works. Let’s be clear, there is comfort we get when we read stories of how helps his people in time of need and we can get encouragement from that, but there is a lot more happening here than that. here is what I mean...
Who are these people who arrest Peter and John? The Priests, the Captain of the temple guard and the Sadducees.
The priests were organized into 24 groups which served on a rotation at the temple. the priests administered the morning and evening sacrifices at the temple. These priests are all in submission to the High Priest and the Captain of the temple guard.
The Captain of the temple guard is the priest in charge of the temple police force. He is second in command to the High Priest, and he was there to maintain order in the temple.
The sadducees… these guys are of priestly descent and it is thought they are in the line of the former High priest Zadok from when David and Solomon reigned. They were different from the Pharisees, which is another common title for the religious leaders and priests in the temple. The sadducees were more a formal political party that was trying to control the temple and infiltrate the high priesthood. In fact the High priests during this time Caiaphas and Annas were sadducees.
The really interesting thing about sadducees was their view on scriptures. They accepted as authoritative only the five books of Moses, (which of course includes the Law); the rest of the OT had only secondary value to them. The sadducees denied the doctrines of the Messiah, angels and demons, and especially immortality and the resurrection.
You may remember a time when the sadducees tried to question Jesus about the resurrection in and Jesus answers them by quoting from … The sadducees have been shut down publicly by Christ and now these guys are coming against Peter and John in the temple in front of a large crowd. And this gives us much better insight in the 2nd verse and shows a tension we should be feeling...
Acts 4:2 ESV
2 greatly annoyed because they were teaching the people and proclaiming in Jesus the resurrection from the dead.
The sadducees are Greatly annoyed… I love this line… Can’t you just imagine what that looked like?!?! These guys are really triggered here. They have been trying to convince people of their piety and have finally gained some position in the temple with their high priests. They really didn’t like Jesus and wanted to keep the peace so as to keep their Roman occupiers out of their business in the temple.
They have to keep things nice and quiet in the temple and they have already made sure Jesus was put to death rather than have the people be in an uproar and attract attention from the Roman soldiers.
And they are Greatly Annoyed because these guys are Proclaiming 2 things...
1 - Jesus, whom they have killed. Jesus who made them look dumb when he answered about the resurrection that they deny.
2 - The Resurrection from the Dead.
There couldn’t be any more outrageous things to be proclaimed in the temple that they were in control of than to Preach about Jesus and the resurrection fo the dead.
So not only is there a guy who is causing a ruckus by jumping and running around the temple during the evening prayer hour, but now there is a large crowd that is listening to these two guys that are proclaiming that Jesus was resurrected and they can have salvation in him if they repent and distance themselves from those who killed Jesus.
After these Jewish leaders rid the earth of ‘Jesus of Nazareth’ by nailing him to a cross, his followers begin to speak about his resurrection. Some seven weeks later multitudes of people listen to Jesus’ followers, all of whom proclaim the doctrine of the resurrection.
Can you start to feel the tension here? What are these guys going to do?
Acts 4:3 ESV
3 And they arrested them and put them in custody until the next day, for it was already evening.
They just needed to shut it down as soon as they possibly could. Evening prayer was from 3-4pm and then the temple would be closed till morning.
They arrest them and put them in jail for the night. And we will get no other details about their stay in jail, no details of where the Lame man went. We do not get a picture of what Peter and John were thinking during this overnight stay… Not like in when Paul and Silas prayed and sang praises to God all night… we have no idea what happened, and here is why...
God was glorified in their obedience already and nothing needed to detract away from the Big idea. This story is not about Peter and John, it is not about the Sadducees, or even the Lame beggar that was healed… The bible is not about any of the people in it and it is not about you and me… the Bible is about God. thats why we don’t get any details sometimes and yet we do at other times. Because it is about putting the spot light on God not man.
Im sure their stay in jail wasn’t fun or comfortable. I’m sure they stayed up and talked about what they might say the next day, they may have been nervous, they might have slept like a baby for all we know… none the less it doesn’t matter because this story isn’t really about them. It is all about God being Glorified… So how do we see that?
Acts 4:4 ESV
4 But many of those who had heard the word believed, and the number of the men came to about five thousand.
Notice that 5,000 men HEARD the WORD and BELIEVED!!!
A couple thing here… First is that God’s word needs to be preached so that there can be those who hear and believe. For whatever reason that is the way that God has ordained it to work. And we see it all through his word...
Ephesians 1:13 ESV
13 In him you also, when you heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation, and believed in him, were sealed with the promised Holy Spirit,
Notice when you HEARD the WORD… When you HEAR the GOSPEL and Believe!
Romans 10:13–17 ESV
13 For “everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.” 14 How then will they call on him in whom they have not believed? And how are they to believe in him of whom they have never heard? And how are they to hear without someone preaching? 15 And how are they to preach unless they are sent? As it is written, “How beautiful are the feet of those who preach the good news!” 16 But they have not all obeyed the gospel. For Isaiah says, “Lord, who has believed what he has heard from us?” 17 So faith comes from hearing, and hearing through the word of Christ.
But it seems like when we hear this and think that the ones who are proclaiming the Gospel have to have it all together, they need to have all the answers. And so this is work for someone else because I am not ready to share what I know yet. But think about what is going on. We are given no indication that they were finished sharing about Jesus, because they are seized while they are still talking.
Even though they rushed these guys off to jail, still, those who heard believed! There was no Altar call, or response room for prayer. Just thousands of men who left the temple that day believing that Jesus was the Christ, the Messiah, that he was alive and they needed to repent of their sin and trust in him for salvation.
Where do these men go? who counted them to tell Luke that 5,000 men believed? Peter and John certainly didn’t because they were in jail. It stands to reason that these men go home and tell others about what they heard and somehow found the other Christians in that area. Can you imagine when the first Christians find all these people coming to them asking about Jesus?
Verse 4 is powerful because it shows us...

God is glorified when his word is Proclaimed!

While we do not have a promise that guarantees us results, we do see that God is Glorified when his word is proclaimed. and we see this all through the rest of the NT.
So even though they are now in Jail, the story doesn’t focus on what might have been a difficult night for Peter and John, but rather points us toward an incredible work that God does.
I’m sure if someone could ask Peter and John that night how God was glorified they would answer with, “A Lame man was Miraculously healed and we had a chance to tell the whole temple area about the resurrected Christ. We got to Preach the Gospel”. And they would’ve been right, except that they had no way of knowing in that moment that God did something extraordinary because the preached the Gospel… He saved people! god was certainly Glorified!
And so we have the story of the FIRST ARREST, the First imprisonment for Preaching the Gospel… look what happens next!
Acts 4:5–7 ESV
5 On the next day their rulers and elders and scribes gathered together in Jerusalem, 6 with Annas the high priest and Caiaphas and John and Alexander, and all who were of the high-priestly family. 7 And when they had set them in the midst, they inquired, “By what power or by what name did you do this?”
And since we have these guys in Jail, what would naturally come next?

The Trial

After the first arrest for preaching the Gospel in the NT we now have the first Trial for preaching the Gospel. Here in Jerusalem, at the temple prison, given by some of the same people who participated in Christ illegal trial, we have the first time in the NT that Believers are brought up on trial.
Remember the tensions I said we should feel when reading this story knowing who the Sadducees are. Notice that it is not just the Sadducees they go before now. it is the next day and there are now others here too.
Rulers, Elders and scribes, these are highly educated teachers, the men who were part of ruling the temple which was called the Sanhedrin. It was a 71 person court that was built after the pattern of a Mosaic court in the OT. We do not have the whole Sanhedrin here but many of them, and so it is later called in this chapter, just a council. Yet the point is that there are more than just the sadducees, it is a more robust group of teachers and leaders. This would be intimidating for anyone of that time to have to face.
If you are being brought up on charges in front of these guys, you most likely are not going to win a theological battle with them.
The scene is set… religious leaders and teachers are here including members of the High Priests family, which were all notable figures at that time.
This is quite the intimidating scene… And there in the middle of them all they put Peter and John.
Imagine it, they are lead from their jail cell to this large gathering room with all the leaders waiting on them. We also will see that the Lame Beggar that got healed is there too. We honestly don’t know if he spent the night in jail with them or they brought him back for the trial, but we do know he is there.
And there these three men stand.
We know from ancient writings that the Sanhedrin met in small auditorium like room on the west side of the temple. It was shaped in a semi-circle like a little amphitheater with stadium seating. They would’ve been brought in and when the session came to order all the leaders would’ve sat down.
And there these three men stood. One of them is new to standing, as he has been lame since birth and was around 40yrs old at this point. On one hand that must have been so exciting for Peter and John to stand next to a man who God has just healed… yet Peters boldness didn’t come from standing next to this man. In fact we have every reason to believe this scene was more difficult than meets the eye.
Think about it they are standing on the ground looking up at the Leaders sitting in a semicircle around them… They are literally being looked down upon as if to say they were under the authority of those who looked down on them. With that thought in mind look at verse 7...
Acts 4:7 ESV
7 And when they had set them in the midst, they inquired, “By what power or by what name did you do this?”
There couldn’t have been a better display of what authority looks like than to see this scene. Leaders looking down on what can only be described as a couple criminals and poor beggar. All the authority was with these men as they asked, “By what power or by what name did you do this?”
Their question is one of irony because they are the ones with authority in that arena. Yet they hadn’t allowed them in to Teach. So they don’t ask about authority.
Also notice that they ask about the doctrine of the resurrection, which is something they were so offended by earlier. That is because the sadducees didn’t want a public showdown with the pharisees or the other leaders that did believe in a resurrection. So they aren’t addressing what was publicly said by Peter and John.
Rather it seems like their question is about the miracle, by what power did they do it? And specifically in what name could that kind of power be conjured?
This trial scene is all about “pomp and circumstance” and making these guys share the secret of this unauthorized power.
So we have the first arrest and the first Trial underway… Let’s see the first defense ever made in such circumstances.
Acts 4:8 ESV
8 Then Peter, filled with the Holy Spirit, said to them, “Rulers of the people and elders,
Acts 4:8–12 ESV
8 Then Peter, filled with the Holy Spirit, said to them, “Rulers of the people and elders, 9 if we are being examined today concerning a good deed done to a crippled man, by what means this man has been healed, 10 let it be known to all of you and to all the people of Israel that by the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, whom you crucified, whom God raised from the dead—by him this man is standing before you well. 11 This Jesus is the stone that was rejected by you, the builders, which has become the cornerstone. 12 And there is salvation in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given among men by which we must be saved.”
acts4.8
before we get too far into it, remember I said it wasn’t the healed man they stood next to that gave them courage, because in this verse we see something extraordinary.... Peter speaks and he is Filled with the Holy Spirit.
It doesn’t say he was Re-filled, or mention any additional experience, but just that he was filled with the Holy Spirit.
They are being asked about what power they have to exercise and we see in reading about this that peter is full of that same power. God’s Spirit is on the inside of them and something amazing happens to Peter… Flashback to when Peter was with Jesus...
Matthew 10:19–20 ESV
19 When they deliver you over, do not be anxious how you are to speak or what you are to say, for what you are to say will be given to you in that hour. 20 For it is not you who speak, but the Spirit of your Father speaking through you.
In we see Peter walking in the fulfillment of what Jesus promised them.
The Very power they are questioning in them is about to answer them!
This is the defense!

The Defense

The scene is set and we the reader can see how even though in the natural every man would be shrinking into himself, here the Apostles are about set them straight because the Holy Spirit will speak through them.
This isn’t like the trials we see on TV, where a lawyer steps up and speaks for his client. Here these men are alone before many who are ready to pass judgement, and yet the real lawyer, the real advocate is within these men, and a defense comes out that will shape how we understand the church and salvation to this day! But not before they get their shots in on their accusers… look at it
Acts 4:10 ESV
10 let it be known to all of you and to all the people of Israel that by the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, whom you crucified, whom God raised from the dead—by him this man is standing before you well.
Let it be known… not just to you guys who are here in this room, but to everyone who hears about this episode. when other people ask you what happened in there? Let all of Israel hear it...
The Name they are looking for is none other than Jesus Christ of Nazareth!
remember a few weeks ago I said that this name was used to give reference to Jesus in a way that Identified him as the Messiah. This name Jesus Christ of Nazareth gives the full revelation of the God-man Jesus...
The name Jesus refers to his Birth, ministry, suffering, death, resurrection and ascension.
The name Christ means the Anointed one, meaning he is the Messiah who is the exalted Son of God.
And the place name of Nazareth identified this as the Jesus that was just crucified by their demands at the hands of Pilate who placed an inscription on the cross that said, “Jesus of Nazareth, King of the Jews”.
Not only is Peter going for the jugular with saying this, because they were the ones responsible for Jesus’ death, but he goes on in a more scandalous way to say “whom you crucified, AND whom God raised from the dead”
You Killed him, oh and by the way not only is there a resurrection, but Jesus has been raised by God already!
Can you feel their blood boiling? yea… Well by That Jesus this man stands before you today!
Peter certainly does not shrink back, or should we say that God the Holy Spirit does not shrink back from showing these men their sin and misguided beliefs.
Now he could’ve been done with that but he goes on.
Acts 4:11 ESV
11 This Jesus is the stone that was rejected by you, the builders, which has become the cornerstone.
Now there is a beautiful picture here of who Christ is and how his church is established.
A cornerstone is the very foundation that a building must have in order to be built. It was a stone that was the most important in the building process and it was ornamental in that the grander the cornerstone the more dignified the building. there is a whole sermon about how the church is established on Christ the solid Rock, who makes us stable and gives us true dignity in become a building of living stones as his church. But for these who originally heard this statement from Peter, there was more to it than that.
Peter is quoting scripture at them, and he is declaring that they have rejected God’s salvation...
Psalm 118:19–24 ESV
19 Open to me the gates of righteousness, that I may enter through them and give thanks to the Lord. 20 This is the gate of the Lord; the righteous shall enter through it. 21 I thank you that you have answered me and have become my salvation. 22 The stone that the builders rejected has become the cornerstone. 23 This is the Lord’s doing; it is marvelous in our eyes. 24 This is the day that the Lord has made; let us rejoice and be glad in it.
psalm118.
Peter quotes a familiar Psalm to them. is part of the Hallel, which was recited and sung at every passover. They knew this scripture, and it needed no interpreting.
They rejected the Cornerstone which is the Righteous Gate of the Lord that those are saved enter through. And this is the Lord’s doing… They rejected the Cornerstone!
They wanted to know by what Name this happened??? The Name of Jesus which is the Cornerstone!
And they The spiritual leaders of Israel, the ones whose very job is the building up of God’s people, they are the builders who rejected this cornerstone. Do you see who he is talking to?
He is addressing the learned and influential men in the Sanhedrin whose work consisted of showing people the way of Salvation from God. They did this by telling the Jews to perform works prescribed by the law to earn a righteousness and gain salvation. but what does Peter tell them???
Acts 4:12 ESV
12 And there is salvation in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given among men by which we must be saved.”
You who are to show God’s people the way of Salvation… You are missing it!
Peter is telling them more than they wanted to hear. They were expecting to hear about how these guys healed, but instead they hear all about Jesus! Peter preaches that salvation can be obtained in no other way than through the name of Jesus! And the salvation he preaches comprises both a physical and spiritual healing as he stands next to this former lame beggar.
And while the word salvation means so much to us as Christians, these Jewish leaders thought of salvation in association with words like victory, freedom, and justice; especially when in conjunction with the coming of a Messiah.
But the picture Peter gives them is different than that. Peter wants them to see their need for salvation is their ultimate need. So what is salvation?

“Salvation means deliverance from sin’s power and freedom form sin’s penalty” Al Mohler

Salvation is not just about what happens to us after we die, we go to heaven because we are saved… the implications of salvation have a dramatic effect on us here and now.
Our greatest need is Salvation… Because we are sinners we need a savior, and that Savior has come in Jesus Christ! By believing in his name we have deliverance from Sin’s power in that we are changed into new people with new passions and even sometimes dramatically healed from disease.
But there is more… Sin’s penalty of death and seperation from our Holy God is broken in Jesus!
No amount of law keeping can earn salvation.
3 things Peter says here that change everything for us!
1 - The Name is Given - There is salvation in the Name, but it is GIVEN!
Salvation is of the Lord! Salvation is not of human authorship and enterprise. Human being can’t save themselves from the wrath of God that will judge sin. Salvation is a divine work that is accomplished and applied by God. It is given as a free gift and not earned by merit or work.
2 - MUST be saved - the greek text here is very specific. It does not say that we CAN be saved, that would imply that we can ear it or achieve it. It also doesn’t say that we MAY be saved, because then it would convey a sense of uncertainty. The text is definite: it says “by which we MUST be saved”.
It reveals a Divine Necessity which God has established according to his plan and decree, through the work of his Son. Beyond that it signifies that man is under a moral obligation to respond to the call to Believe in Jesus Christ and so be saved. Mankind has no recourse to salvation other than through Jesus Christ. There is assurance in salvation through the name of Jesus Christ!
3- No other name - there is no one else who can do this and no one else can offer this. To say there is no other name under heaven means to point us to the fact that we can search anywhere and everywhere in this life and not find another name in which we are saved.
Jesus not only heals physically from the effects of sin, he also removes sin itself so people can stand before the judgement seat of God as if they have never sinned at all. Jesus makes us spiritually whole by restoring us in true relation to God the Father and creator.
John 14:6 ESV
6 Jesus said to him, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.
No person but Jesus has the ability to provide remission for sins and forgiveness before God. N o one can come to God but through Jesus!
There is no other name! Not in your best efforts or in the name of greatest man in the world today. Nowhere in the entire world will you find one whose name saves. ONLY JESUS!
Religions other than Christianity fail because they stress salvation by works and not by Grace. There is no other name… Not Buddha, or hare-krishna, or Muhammed, or scientology, or the American dream… NO OTHER NAME in all the world is GIVEN by which we MUST be SAVED.
The name Jesus has been Given to men by God himself to show that salvation has its origins in God!
What does all this mean for us?
If you are here and you have not put Faith for your eternal salvation in Jesus Christ, hear me… There is no other name and no other hope you can have in this life than to repent of your sins and be forgiven by believing in Jesus! just like those 5,000 men who heard and believed you can believe this today and be saved. Acknowledge you are a sinner that needs a savior and believe that he came already and accomplished a work for you. and if you need proof then look around at all the people who testify that he is not only alive but has forgiven us of our sins!
If you are here today and you already know this truth, then remember you can’t earn a position with God. Be reminded of the grace of God today in Jesus Christ and stop trying to look for freedom from Sin’s power over you by your own strength or ability. remember it was Christ that saved you and believe him to continue to save you everyday. This is the Gospel that wins you and grows you and keeps you until it delivers you home to God in Heaven!
3 things to consider in your community groups this week

Question 1 - In what ways do we verbally proclaim the Gospel

We said that God is glorified when his word is proclaimed. How do you do that or how can you do that this week?
This is not an exercise in trying to be a better Christian, rather it is an outflow from a relationship you should have with Christ, so spend time with him intentionally this week by reading his word and praying and look for opportunities to proclaim his Word

Question 2 - In what ways do you recognize you are Filled with the Holy Spirit

We should remember that we are not alone and that the same power that raised Christ from the dead is alive in us as believers. Spend some time talking about this reality and look for times when you saw a boldness. maybe even ask why you don’t often see it in your life. Feel the tension and pray and ask for a fresh new filling and boldness.

Question 3 - How well do understand your salvation?

Salvation isn’t just something that happens when we die, but begins as soon as we receive Christ. it is deliverance from sin’s power over us and freedom from sin’s penalty. Do you often forget your greatest need? Why?
There is NO OTHER NAME by which we MJUST be Saved!
