Acts 5:1–11 ESV
1 But a man named Ananias, with his wife Sapphira, sold a piece of property, 2 and with his wife’s knowledge he kept back for himself some of the proceeds and brought only a part of it and laid it at the apostles’ feet. 3 But Peter said, “Ananias, why has Satan filled your heart to lie to the Holy Spirit and to keep back for yourself part of the proceeds of the land? 4 While it remained unsold, did it not remain your own? And after it was sold, was it not at your disposal? Why is it that you have contrived this deed in your heart? You have not lied to man but to God.” 5 When Ananias heard these words, he fell down and breathed his last. And great fear came upon all who heard of it. 6 The young men rose and wrapped him up and carried him out and buried him. 7 After an interval of about three hours his wife came in, not knowing what had happened. 8 And Peter said to her, “Tell me whether you sold the land for so much.” And she said, “Yes, for so much.” 9 But Peter said to her, “How is it that you have agreed together to test the Spirit of the Lord? Behold, the feet of those who have buried your husband are at the door, and they will carry you out.” 10 Immediately she fell down at his feet and breathed her last. When the young men came in they found her dead, and they carried her out and buried her beside her husband. 11 And great fear came upon the whole church and upon all who heard of these things.

How the Holy Spirit Dealt with the First Sin

Ananias and Sapphira’s sin was exposed
Acts 5:1–4 ESV
1 But a man named Ananias, with his wife Sapphira, sold a piece of property, 2 and with his wife’s knowledge he kept back for himself some of the proceeds and brought only a part of it and laid it at the apostles’ feet. 3 But Peter said, “Ananias, why has Satan filled your heart to lie to the Holy Spirit and to keep back for yourself part of the proceeds of the land? 4 While it remained unsold, did it not remain your own? And after it was sold, was it not at your disposal? Why is it that you have contrived this deed in your heart? You have not lied to man but to God.”
Acts 5.1-
Pride - their giving was in part induced by Barnabas’ exemplary generosity
The problem is, they wanted to get the same honor without the giving the same sacrifice.
Satan filled his heart
Not possessed; they were partakers of the filling of the Holy Spirit
Pride was its result
They lied to the Holy Spirit -
and connived to do it -
They have agreed to “test the Spirit of the Lord” -
WHAT’S THE POINT?
IT IS POSSIBLE FOR SATAN TO FILL ONE’S HEART RIGHT IN THE MIDST OF THE SPIRIT-FILLED CHURCH
THE HOLY SPIRIT WILL NOT TOLERATE SIN WHILE HE IS AT WORK.
Their sin was judged promptly
Acts 5:5 ESV
5 When Ananias heard these words, he fell down and breathed his last. And great fear came upon all who heard of it.
,
Acts 5:10 ESV
10 Immediately she fell down at his feet and breathed her last. When the young men came in they found her dead, and they carried her out and buried her beside her husband.
Because it was a direct sin against the Holy Spirit’s Presence
the church was “filled” with the Holy Spirit
the Holy Spirit was moving the church towards “generosity”
There was no established order of discipline
The Holy Spirit judged them
WHAT’S THE POINT?
NO ONE GETS AWAY WITH SIN WHEN THE HOLY SPIRIT IS ACTIVELY WORKING AMONG GOD’S PEOPLE
1 Corinthians 3:16–17 ESV
16 Do you not know that you are God’s temple and that God’s Spirit dwells in you? 17 If anyone destroys God’s temple, God will destroy him. For God’s temple is holy, and you are that temple.
1 Corinthians 3.1
WHEN WE DO NOT JUDGE OURSELVES, GOD WILL JUDGE US
1 Corinthians 11:31–32 ESV
31 But if we judged ourselves truly, we would not be judged. 32 But when we are judged by the Lord, we are disciplined so that we may not be condemned along with the world.
THE FIRST SIN IN THE CHURCH IS THE MOST PREVALENT SIN IN THE END-TIME!
Revelation 3:14–17 ESV
14 “And to the angel of the church in Laodicea write: ‘The words of the Amen, the faithful and true witness, the beginning of God’s creation. 15 “ ‘I know your works: you are neither cold nor hot. Would that you were either cold or hot! 16 So, because you are lukewarm, and neither hot nor cold, I will spit you out of my mouth. 17 For you say, I am rich, I have prospered, and I need nothing, not realizing that you are wretched, pitiable, poor, blind, and naked.
rich on the material side; wretched on the spiritual side
REVELATION 3.14-
Buy - trade your so-called riches for the true riches!
gold refined in the fire - Spirit-refined faith
white garments - righteousness
salve - revelation/understanding of the truth
Jesus is outside knocking

How the People responded

The people who witnessed the working of the Holy Spirit in the church responded differently:
The non-believers were AMAZED
, - the Jews, hearing and seeing those who spoke in other tongues
- the Jews who saw the lame walk
- Simon the magician, seeing the signs and miracles
- the Jews, seeing the conversion of Saul
amazed - grk. EXISTEMI, to be out of one’s mind; to be confused;
The believers were filled with FEAR of God!
, - the church and all those who heard
FEAR - grk. PHOBOS, REVERENCE OF GOD; RESPECT FOR THE PRESENCE OF GOD!
WHAT’S THE POINT?
NON-BELIEVERS CAN ONLY BE AMAZED, BUT ALWAYS FIND AN EXCUSE TO DOUBT.
ONLY THE TRUE BELIEVER WILL PRODUCE FEAR AND REVERENCE OF GOD!
- awe/fear came upon every soul!
- the church, after hearing the conversion of Saul
- the Jailer, after the miraculous release of Paul and Silas from their stocks
FEAR OF GOD IS

Conclusion

How should we respond to the fearful Presence of God?
When God is judging His church, be reverent!
Revelation 3:22 ESV
22 He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches.’ ”
Revelation 3.7
1 Peter 4:17 ESV
17 For it is time for judgment to begin at the household of God; and if it begins with us, what will be the outcome for those who do not obey the gospel of God?
Let’s not wait for God to directly expose our errors! Repent quickly!
Revelation 3:19 ESV
19 Those whom I love, I reprove and discipline, so be zealous and repent.
Revelation 3:21 ESV
21 The one who conquers, I will grant him to sit with me on my throne, as I also conquered and sat down with my Father on his throne.
Repent quickly!
Hebrews 12:5–10 ESV
5 And have you forgotten the exhortation that addresses you as sons? “My son, do not regard lightly the discipline of the Lord, nor be weary when reproved by him. 6 For the Lord disciplines the one he loves, and chastises every son whom he receives.” 7 It is for discipline that you have to endure. God is treating you as sons. For what son is there whom his father does not discipline? 8 If you are left without discipline, in which all have participated, then you are illegitimate children and not sons. 9 Besides this, we have had earthly fathers who disciplined us and we respected them. Shall we not much more be subject to the Father of spirits and live? 10 For they disciplined us for a short time as it seemed best to them, but he disciplines us for our good, that we may share his holiness.
Learn to judge yourself.
1 Corinthians 11.26
1 Corinthians 11:28 ESV
28 Let a person examine himself, then, and so eat of the bread and drink of the cup.
1 Corinthians 11:31 ESV
31 But if we judged ourselves truly, we would not be judged.
2 Corinthians 13:5 ESV
5 Examine yourselves, to see whether you are in the faith. Test yourselves. Or do you not realize this about yourselves, that Jesus Christ is in you?—unless indeed you fail to meet the test!
Galatians 6:4 ESV
4 But let each one test his own work, and then his reason to boast will be in himself alone and not in his neighbor.
Galatians 6:5 ESV
5 For each will have to bear his own load.
