This next passage shows that in action: Rejection or Recognition
But what happens in between these two moments?
John dies, 5000 fed, walking on water
John Dies- The fear of man pushes their king to evil.
2. Fear is the enemy of Faith
(Personally, I think this is a glimpse into the person of Jesus: he is heartbroken and still caring for everyone)
The fear of man pushes Herod to evil
5000- The disciples are told to feed others; a miracle that could only come from dependence on God
Jesus is in the middle of ministering to these people (Compassion) and the disciples want to send them away.
3. Recognizing the KING includes recognizing our NEED
They didn’t seem to recognize this King’s power.
These people don’t NEED to go away. They NEED me. And as my disciples you should give them something.
Walking- The question culminates the passage: You of little faith, why did you doubt?
Will they recognize Him when it counts?
During the trials, danger, oncoming death- He still has to introduce Himself.

These are all the same thing. That’s why the initial call to salvation carries into our whole lives: we trust Him to save us and then we must trust Him to lead us.
— They do not give Jesus honor: they reject Jesus
They don’t tremble when He says Judgement is coming
They don’t trust that His way is better
They don’t treasure Him more than everything else
— They gave Jesus so much honor.
They took His presence really seriously
Begging to touch Him
Understanding His power in a real way.
They went about all their actions differently
They alerted
They brought people— ALL people
They treasured Him
Humiliating to beg
Inconvenient to come
Faithful to actually go through with it
This whole section of Scripture paints the contrast: rejection and rebellion. Then it highlights this key difference of faith. That faith is seen in the recognition of who Jesus is.
God Man Servant King: who Jesus is. This is important.
For the initial time of salvation
For every moment thereafter
Do you know who He is?
Can you recognize when He is moving and working?
Do you trust what He is doing?
