One of the wives of Brigham Young said, “A kinder, more indulgent, more affectionate husband than mine cannot be seen,” but Ann Eliza, his twenty-seventh wife, called him “a cruel despot.”  It will generally be conceded that each lady reported on the aspect of the man which she saw, somewhat after the manner of the blind men of Hindustan, but in so far as each lady turned her observation into a universal judgment of Young’s character, one of them was in error.
