The Holiness of God

We’re in the middle of this sermon series titled, “The Real God” Studying through some of the characteristics of God desiring to know the one true God, the Real God better.
Today we will be looking at the Holiness of God
The Holiness of God
        - God’s Nature is Holy (Isaiah 6:1-5)
        - God’s Name is Holy () (Lord’s prayer)

Chief attribute of God and a quality to be developed in his people. “Holiness” and the adjective “holy” occur more than 900 times in the Bible. The primary OT word for holiness means “to cut” or “to separate.” Fundamentally, holiness is a cutting off or separation from what is unclean, and consecration to what is pure.

A.W. Tozer, in his book Knowledge of the Holy wrote, “We know nothing like the divine holiness. It stands apart, unique, unapproachable, incomprehensible and unattainable. The natural man is blind to it. He may fear God’s power and admire His wisdom, but His holiness he cannot even imagine.”

1 In the year that King Uzziah died I saw the Lord sitting upon a throne, high and lifted up; and the train of his robe filled the temple. 2 Above him stood the seraphim. Each had six wings: with two he covered his face, and with two he covered his feet, and with two he flew. 3 And one called to another and said: “Holy, holy, holy is the Lord of hosts; the whole earth is full of his glory!” 4 And the foundations of the thresholds shook at the voice of him who called, and the house was filled with smoke. 5 And I said: “Woe is me! For I am lost; for I am a man of unclean lips, and I dwell in the midst of a people of unclean lips; for my eyes have seen the King, the Lord of hosts!”

First, Hebrew uses repetition to express either a superlative, as when ‘pure gold’ in 2 Kings 25:15 translates ‘gold gold’, or a totality, as when ‘full of tar pits’ in Genesis 14:10 translates ‘pits pits’. But here for the only time in the Hebrew Bible a quality is ‘raised to the power of three’, as if to say that the divine holiness is so far beyond anything the human mind can grasp that a ‘super-superlative’ has to be invented to express it and, furthermore, that this transcendent holiness is the total truth about God. The holiness word-group (√qādaš) may mean ‘brightness’, the unapproachable God (1 Tim. 6:16; Ps. 104:2) or ‘separatedness’, i.e. the quality which marks off the divine nature, setting God apart from all else, making him the Being that he is. His holiness is, therefore, his unapproachable and unique moral majesty before which sinful humankind instinctively quakes (Judg. 6:22; 13:22). Secondly, just as holiness is the ‘whole truth’ about God himself, so it is the ‘whole truth’ about his immanence in creation: the whole earth is full of his glory. Holiness is the Lord’s hidden glory; glory is the Lord’s omnipresent holiness.

The moral excellence of God that unifies his attributes and is expressed through his actions, setting him apart from all others. Believers are called to be holy as God is holy.
We learn in that these angels never stop singing this. Holy, holy, holy is the Lord God Almighty! Verse 8 says, “they never cease singing.”
I don’t know if you ever been on a road trip with your kids...
The Lord never gets tired of hearing it. He never says, “hey angels, just take a break for minute.” No. They never cease saying, “holy, holy, holy is the Lord God Almighty.”
God’s nature is holy. God, in and of Himself, is holy.
He is perfect

He is uniquely holy

God’s name is holy
Turn with me to the book of Ezekiel. You’re in Isaiah right now so you’re close. The order goes, Isaiah, Jeremiah, Lamentations, Ezekiel....
Ezekiel 36:21–28 ESV
21 But I had concern for my holy name, which the house of Israel had profaned among the nations to which they came. 22 “Therefore say to the house of Israel, Thus says the Lord God: It is not for your sake, O house of Israel, that I am about to act, but for the sake of my holy name, which you have profaned among the nations to which you came. 23 And I will vindicate the holiness of my great name, which has been profaned among the nations, and which you have profaned among them. And the nations will know that I am the Lord, declares the Lord God, when through you I vindicate my holiness before their eyes. 24 I will take you from the nations and gather you from all the countries and bring you into your own land. 25 I will sprinkle clean water on you, and you shall be clean from all your uncleannesses, and from all your idols I will cleanse you. 26 And I will give you a new heart, and a new spirit I will put within you. And I will remove the heart of stone from your flesh and give you a heart of flesh. 27 And I will put my Spirit within you, and cause you to walk in my statutes and be careful to obey my rules. 28 You shall dwell in the land that I gave to your fathers, and you shall be my people, and I will be your God.

Ezekiel 36:21–23 ESV
But I had concern for my holy name, which the house of Israel had profaned among the nations to which they came. “Therefore say to the house of Israel, Thus says the Lord God: It is not for your sake, O house of Israel, that I am about to act, but for the sake of my holy name, which you have profaned among the nations to which you came. And I will vindicate the holiness of my great name, which has been profaned among the nations, and which you have profaned among them. And the nations will know that I am the Lord, declares the Lord God, when through you I vindicate my holiness before their eyes.
God is getting ready to act. He tell his people what he’s going to do in order to rescue them from their sin… from their worship of idols. And why is He going to do this? For His name’s sake! His Holy Name’s Sake!!! God is not going to allow His holy Name to be drug through the mud any longer. His people were disgracing his name among the nations. they would go to the temple to worship him on the sabbath and then go to the high places throughout the week to worship their idols. God said, “no more.” He was going to change them from the inside out for His name’s sake because His name is Holy.
God is getting ready to act.
Look at verse 22. Do you see the word Lord? “Thus says the Lord God.” Capital L and then lower case o-r-d. The word Lord there is descriptive of God. It’s sovereign God or ruler God. Ezekiel is letting them know who’s speaking. The God that is over all.
Now look at verse 23. “And the nations will know that I am the LORD… Capital L, Capital O, Capital R, Capital D. This is God’s personal name. This is the name YAHWEH. The unspeakable name. His people wouldn’t even say it because of their fear and reverence for His name. It’s how he introduced himself to Moses.

15 God also said to Moses, “Say this to the people of Israel: ‘The LORD, the God of your fathers, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob, has sent me to you.’ This is my name forever, and thus I am to be remembered throughout all generations.

God’s name is holy!
It’s the first petition in the Lord’s Prayer.
Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be your name… holy be your name
that’s not just part of the address. it doesn’t say “hallowed IS your name”. It’s a prayer, “we want your name to be holy.”
How much weight does the name of the Lord carry in your heart? When you hear His name profaned in a movie or song, or out of the mouth of another, or see it profanely written on a page does it make you cringe?
When you profess his name as one of his children but live like you’re not, are you stricken with grief because you have profaned his name?
When you approach him in prayer, are you aware of how holy his name is when address him?
God’s name is holy.

(ESV) — 35 Say also: “Save us, O God of our salvation, and gather and deliver us from among the nations, that we may give thanks to your holy name and glory in your praise.

God’s dwelling-place is holy
(ESV) — 12 Rejoice in the Lord, O you righteous, and give thanks to his holy name!
(ESV) — 15 For thus says the One who is high and lifted up, who inhabits eternity, whose name is Holy: “I dwell in the high and holy place, and also with him who is of a contrite and lowly spirit, to revive the spirit of the lowly, and to revive the heart of the contrite.
(ESV) — 25 “Therefore thus says the Lord God: Now I will restore the fortunes of Jacob and have mercy on the whole house of Israel, and I will be jealous for my holy name.
(ESV) — 49 for he who is mighty has done great things for me, and holy is his name.
Wherever God is… that place is holy.
Exodus 3:1–6 ESV
1 Now Moses was keeping the flock of his father-in-law, Jethro, the priest of Midian, and he led his flock to the west side of the wilderness and came to Horeb, the mountain of God. 2 And the angel of the Lord appeared to him in a flame of fire out of the midst of a bush. He looked, and behold, the bush was burning, yet it was not consumed. 3 And Moses said, “I will turn aside to see this great sight, why the bush is not burned.” 4 When the Lord saw that he turned aside to see, God called to him out of the bush, “Moses, Moses!” And he said, “Here I am.” 5 Then he said, “Do not come near; take your sandals off your feet, for the place on which you are standing is holy ground.” 6 And he said, “I am the God of your father, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob.” And Moses hid his face, for he was afraid to look at God.
Moses was encountering the one true God. The creator. The mighty God of Abraham, Issac and Jacob. And the presence of God in that place, made that place holy.
This was not a holy bush the day before. This was not some holy Midianite burial ground. The place became holy when a holy God was present.
When God rescued the Israelites from slavery in Egypt, they spent time in the wilderness before being able to enter the promise land. God gave them instructions to construct the ark of the covenant and the tabernacle. This would be God’s dwelling place amongst his people and it was holy. Wherever the ark went, it was a holy place.
God’s dwelling-place is holy
Later when the ark was at David’s palace, the palace was regarded as holy because of the presence of the ark.
Eventually, David’s son, Solomon, would construct the temple. And inside the temple, where only a consecrated high priest could go, was the holy of holies. The dwelling place of God.
It has always been God’s desire to dwell with his people. And after Jesus ascended back to heaven to take his rightful place at the right hand of the father… the very Spirit of God was sent to dwell in the hearts of God’s children. Making their hearts a holy dwelling place of God.
which brings us to our fourth and final point today:

God’s dwelling place is Holy

God’s people are to be Holy
(ESV) — 1 “Then bring near to you Aaron your brother, and his sons with him, from among the people of Israel, to serve me as priests—Aaron and Aaron’s sons, Nadab and Abihu, Eleazar and Ithamar. 2 And you shall make holy garments for Aaron your brother, for glory and for beauty. 3 You shall speak to all the skillful, whom I have filled with a spirit of skill, that they make Aaron’s garments to consecrate him for my priesthood. 4 These are the garments that they shall make: a breastpiece, an ephod, a robe, a coat of checker work, a turban, and a sash. It has always been God’s desire to dwell with his people. And after Jesus ascended back to heaven to take his rightful place at the right hand of the father… the very Spirit of God was sent to dwell in the hearts of God’s children. Making their hearts a holy dwelling place of God.
Our last passage today is in 1 Peter
(ESV) — 15 but as he who called you is holy, you also be holy in all your conduct, 16 since it is written, “You shall be holy, for I am holy.”
So here’s our application for today. God’s Nature is Holy, His Name is Holy, and His Dwelling Place is Holy. Regardless of what you think or how you live, the fact that God is Holy will remain.
The question for us today is, if God’s people are to be holy, how do we become holy? The answer is two-fold and is a cooperation between Jesus and us.
#1 Becoming holy is only possible through Jesus Christ
Jesus Christ purifies Christian believers
(ESV) — 4 Everyone who makes a practice of sinning also practices lawlessness; sin is lawlessness. 5 You know that he appeared in order to take away sins, and in him there is no sin. 6 No one who abides in him keeps on sinning; no one who keeps on sinning has either seen him or known him.
Becoming holy is only possible when we allow Jesus to change us. Grace is not only the forgiveness of sin but also the taking away of sin so that we can, in fact, start to become holy.
#2 Becoming holy involves striving after God
Although Christ makes it possible, scripture says we do have a role to play.
(ESV) — 22 to put off your old self, which belongs to your former manner of life and is corrupt through deceitful desires, 23 and to be renewed in the spirit of your minds, 24 and to put on the new self, created after the likeness of God in true righteousness and holiness.
(ESV) — 1 Since we have these promises, beloved, let us cleanse ourselves from every defilement of body and spirit, bringing holiness to completion in the fear of God.
(ESV) — 22 to put off your old self, which belongs to your former manner of life and is corrupt through deceitful desires, 23 and to be renewed in the spirit of your minds, 24 and to put on the new self, created after the likeness of God in true righteousness and holiness.

It didn’t take long to realize Braxton wanted to be a bit like me. He was still very young when we’d catch him sitting on the couch by himself watching Tiger Woods play golf on TV. He’s never lived in TX but loves the Dallas Cowboys. One of the first phrases he ever said was, “Romo to Witten” “Romo to Witten”. He’d yell it as he ran around the house after Tony Romo had hit Jason Witten for a touchdown.

There were times where Brooke would see Braxton watching me, standing like me, talking like me, using mannerisms like me. Recently, while visiting my parent’s house, he found the Bible I used in 5th grade to compete in my church’s Bible Drill. He asked Kaymi if he could have it and just used it a couple of weeks ago to compete in the Heritage Bible Drill.
Like most boys, he wants to be like his father.

In the OT God demanded holiness in the lives of his people. Through Moses, God said to the congregation of Israel, “You shall be holy; for I the Lord your God am holy” (Lv 19:2). The holiness enjoined by the OT was twofold: (1) external, or ceremonial; and (2) internal, or moral and spiritual. OT ceremonial holiness, prescribed in the Pentateuch (the first five books of the OT), included ritual consecration to God’s service. Thus priests and Levites were sanctified by a complex process of ritual consecration (Ex 29), as were the Hebrew Nazirites, which means “separated ones” (Nm 6:1–21). Prophets like Elisha (2 Kgs 4:9) and Jeremiah (Jer 1:5) were also sanctified for a special prophetic ministry in Israel.

But the OT also draws attention to the inner, moral, and spiritual aspects of holiness. Men and women, created in the image of God, are called to cultivate the holiness of God’s own character in their lives (Lv 19:2; Nm 15:40). Psalm 15, for example, deals with God’s ethical requirements. To the question, “Who shall dwell on thy holy hill?” the Lord responds. “He who walks blamelessly, and does what is right, and speaks truth from his heart” (v 1, 2). In a similar vein, Isaiah represents God’s ransomed community as “the holy people, the redeemed of the Lord” (Is 62:12).

In the NT the ceremonial holiness prominent in the Pentateuch recedes to the background. Whereas much of Judaism in Jesus’ time sought a ceremonial holiness by works (Mk 7:1–13), the NT stresses the ethical rather than the formal dimension of holiness. With the coming of the Holy Spirit, the early church perceived that holiness of life was a profound internal reality that should govern an individual’s thoughts and attitudes in relation to persons and objects in the external world.

There ought to be a desire in our heart to be like our Father. We should strive each day to keep our eyes fixed on him and do our best to be holy because He is holy.
(ESV) — 19 But Joshua said to the people, “You are not able to serve the Lord, for he is a holy God. He is a jealous God; he will not forgive your transgressions or your sins. 20 If you forsake the Lord and serve foreign gods, then he will turn and do you harm and consume you, after having done you good.”
But the truth is, on this earth, we will never meet that standard. As God’s children, His Spirit dwells in us and is changing us… but our selfish, prideful flesh still remains.
(ESV) — 29 “Summon archers against Babylon, all those who bend the bow. Encamp around her; let no one escape. Repay her according to her deeds; do to her according to all that she has done. For she has proudly defied the Lord, the Holy One of Israel.
says that without holiness no one will see the Lord. No one will be righteous enough to receive His gift of eternal life.
Thankfully, our hope is not in our holiness....

God’s holiness necessitates dependence upon him for forgiveness
