Romans 6:4 KJV 1900
Therefore we are buried with him by baptism into death: that like as Christ was raised up from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life.

Put off corrupt speech, put on wholesome speech. ()

THE SUBJECT: THE TONGUE

The Power of the Tongue ()

Proverbs 18:21 KJV 1900
Death and life are in the power of the tongue: And they that love it shall eat the fruit thereof.

The power to hurt or heal

Proverbs 12:18 KJV 1900
There is that speaketh like the piercings of a sword: But the tongue of the wise is health.
Proverbs 10:11 KJV 1900
The mouth of a righteous man is a well of life: But violence covereth the mouth of the wicked.
Proverbs 15:4 KJV 1900
A wholesome tongue is a tree of life: But perverseness therein is a breach in the spirit.
Proverbs 16:24 KJV 1900
Pleasant words are as an honeycomb, Sweet to the soul, and health to the bones.

The power to diffuse or escalate a conflict

Proverbs 15:1 KJV 1900
A soft answer turneth away wrath: But grievous words stir up anger.

The power to worship or wound

James 3:10 KJV 1900
Out of the same mouth proceedeth blessing and cursing. My brethren, these things ought not so to be.
James 3:9 KJV 1900
Therewith bless we God, even the Father; and therewith curse we men, which are made after the similitude of God.
“bless we God” - we worship our Creator
“bless we God” - we worship our Creator
“curse we men, which are made after the similitude of God” - His Creation.
Doth a fountain send forth sweet water/bitter water? NO
Can a fig tree bear olives? NO
Can a vine bear figs? NO
The implication: You cannot worship God at the same time you’re wounding someone with your words!

The Priority of the Tongue

Your words are a mirror of your heart

Luke 6:45 KJV 1900
A good man out of the good treasure of his heart bringeth forth that which is good; and an evil man out of the evil treasure of his heart bringeth forth that which is evil: for of the abundance of the heart his mouth speaketh.
Proverbs 16:23 KJV 1900
The heart of the wise teacheth his mouth, And addeth learning to his lips.

Your words are a measure of your maturity

Your words are a measure of your maturity

James 3:2 KJV 1900
For in many things we offend all. If any man offend not in word, the same is a perfect man, and able also to bridle the whole body.
James 1:26 KJV 1900
If any man among you seem to be religious, and bridleth not his tongue, but deceiveth his own heart, this man’s religion is vain.

THE STANDARD: HOLINESS

“Let no corrupt communication proceed out of your mouth...”
Examples:

Christ ()

1 Peter 2:21–23 KJV 1900
For even hereunto were ye called: because Christ also suffered for us, leaving us an example, that ye should follow his steps: Who did no sin, neither was guile found in his mouth: Who, when he was reviled, reviled not again; when he suffered, he threatened not; but committed himself to him that judgeth righteously:
1 Peter 2:19–23 KJV 1900
For this is thankworthy, if a man for conscience toward God endure grief, suffering wrongfully. For what glory is it, if, when ye be buffeted for your faults, ye shall take it patiently? but if, when ye do well, and suffer for it, ye take it patiently, this is acceptable with God.
I Pet. 2:2

The 144,000 ()

Revelation 14:5 KJV 1900
And in their mouth was found no guile: for they are without fault before the throne of God.
Rev. 14:

THE SUBSTITUTION: GRACE

Ephesians 4:29 KJV 1900
Let no corrupt communication proceed out of your mouth, but that which is good to the use of edifying, that it may minister grace unto the hearers.
Ask 2 questions...

Is what I’m about to say building up others?

Is what I’m about to say ministering grace?

Colossians 4:6 KJV 1900
Let your speech be alway with grace, seasoned with salt, that ye may know how ye ought to answer every man.

THE SUPPLICATION

Psalm 19:14 KJV 1900
Let the words of my mouth, And the meditation of my heart, be acceptable in thy sight, O Lord, my strength, and my redeemer.
