Passage Main Point: Jesus and God are one, Jesus has authority to give life and will do so to those who come to him.
Sermon Main Point: We can live how God wants us to by trusting in the real Jesus and overcoming temptation by His power.
Problem: We seek to find joy and pleasure outside of God
Solution: Turning to the real Jesus, not one of our imagination or of popular opinion

Notes

This is the third of ____ signs.
central teaching on the relationship between God and Jesus
This forces the understanding between Jesus and Man
This interrupts the notion of a Jesus-less relationship between man and God.
Leaving mankind without hope in themselves.
“How can you expect to believe what I am saying and obey and be saved when you don’t do that with Moses?” V 47

Intro

Camp is great
Honesty, openness, focus, truth, — love
Wouldn’t it be great if we could live that out all year long?
It is special because of distance, attitude, intentionality
Why doesn’t it stay like that?
We are tempted back to sins
1. How can I LIVE FOR God?
But this whole weekend was about how God said we should live- Are we going to do that? Are you going to be able to?
… Jesus helps us out on this point when he talks about himself...
The Story
1-7: This water would start swirling and the first one in would get healed.
8-13: These guys didn’t care that God had performed a miracle. They were worried about the rules
14-16: Jesus points out the fact that healing his legs is not the most important thing. There is something much worse waiting for those who reject Jesus.
In fact, V23 tells us that if you reject Jesus you reject God
17-18: The Jews are mad cause Jesus is saying that he is God. And he is not playing by there rules.
2. Jesus: Reject or Accept
So, we can reject or accept Jesus. We know what happens if we reject, but what happens if we accept? 24: “Truly I tell you, anyone who hears my word and believes him who sent me has eternal life and will not come under judgment but has passed from death to life. “
(Don’t read) 25-37: Jesus explains how he and God are one, how he has the authority to judge and save. Then he explains how he is definitely legit. People know, John the baptist knew, God knows, and everyone knows. But, they must not know God because they are rejecting Jesus.
Christian Standard Bible. (2017). (). Nashville, TN: Holman Bible Publishers.
38-40 People have looked at good things (laws, morals, good behavior, safe rules) and decided that they would rather find their hope living that way instead of trusting in God.
The Summary
The overall issue is that people wont accept Jesus for who he really is
The main issue: Who Jesus Is
The overall issue is that people wont accept Jesus for who he really is
Jesus incited this man to break the “law”
Not the real law, just their interpretation of it
They come at him and he points to the fact that God the Father is doing something great with Jesus in the world, even if they don’t like it.
Jesus’ understanding of who he was in relation to God the Father made them angry. So, Jesus launches into an explanation of this idea: The Father and the Son are beautifully and complexly interwoven, they are together and separate and that is where we see power.
We should give all respect to Jesus too. They are one.
So, this comes to us in more practical ways when we talk about salvation. Can we have God without Jesus? Can we get to heaven a different way? How can we move from where we are to God?
Jesus says “You need me. Hear me. Believe me. Ironically, what you are doing to save yourself is what will condemn you.”
Jesus’ progression
1. The Father and the Son are together
2. The Son has the right to give life and pass judgment
3. Everything I am doing (miracles), that has been done (OT), is about this message
4. You are unwilling to believe in me, so you won’t get life
5. But, God is still God even if you don’t believe. He is still glorious even if you don’t give him glory and worship yourself instead
6. Ironically, what you are doing to save yourself is what will condemn you.
John is an evangelist and his main concern here is getting people to understand the salvation offered through Jesus
Its interesting how we accept people’s teachings so easily and quickly, yet we struggle to obey Jesus.
That is goal #1.
He was talked about by respectable people, he shows his wisdom and skill with his craft, he gives
After that though, life is still going. No one here is perfect. How can we still be close to God (like at camp)?
We want people to be kind, be nice, bad people to be punished--- but do we really?
Isn’t it true that if we believed in good people getting good things and bad people getting punished we would do a lot more apologizing and a lot less being offended? Wouldn’t we volunteer to go to hell?
“You pore over ______ because you think you’ll find eternal life there… But you are not willing to come to me so that you may have life.”
God is still working
So, what does this truth look like when it is played out? — Faith/Fear
It starts with recognizing who God is, who Jesus is, and then as we believe that it changes us. We are now saved but God continues to move, Jesus continues to be there with us, the Holy Spirit continues to change us.
** Connect to Camp**
So, what are we doing that would condemn us?
*trusting in yourself*
in 1925 Percy Fawcett, mapmaker, explorer thought he could make it rich. Disappeared chasing a mythical city Z into the Amazon.
100 people died trying to find him.
His idea of life killed him. He condemned himself.
Temptation- We are tempted when we convince ourselves that we found something better than God.
4. Temptation: this is better than God
Do you have something that seems to give you peace? Something that promises a feeling of freedom? Something that promises to make you what you want to be?
We can turn and try to find our happiness there. That is why people get stuck.
We pore over ___ because we think we will find what we need there. But we are unwilling to come to Jesus. Even though he has what we need.
How to defeat temptation: The Gospel.
Jesus says don’t look there, look here.
Understanding who Jesus is, who God is, what sin is, what God did to save you from sin, the power you have through the Holy Spirit to defeat sin.
Jesus says “look here”
Connecting temptation to the Gospel:
For instance, when a hurt comes up, do you turn to God immediately? Stress, do you pray? Anger, do you look to the Bible? Lust, do you confess? Anxiety, do you look for help at church?
A lot of a times, those aren’t are responses. But, here Jesus is telling us that if we want the peace and joy he is offering then we need to go to where he is and believe him.
So, we don’t Frankenstein Jesus. We don’t decided who he is. He is who he is. We come to him and believe him and trust him. THERE we will find eternal life.

Outro

Overall, we all have these temptations that offer us something better than Jesus. In our daily life we will have the opportunity to fall into these temptations and make a Frankenstein Jesus.
What are the usual temptations for you? What do you pore over? What entices you to forget who Jesus is?
Jesus: one with the Father, who died for you, who will judge you, who will condemn people to hell, who will allow some to heaven.
That might be anger, lust, fear of being rejected, fear of people knowing your secret, guilt from something you’ve done, shame from what has happened to you, being scared of who you are.
Any one of these can get stuck in your head or heart and cause you to doubt Jesus. These things can blur our vision and we can start thinking about finding our love and peace and joy somewhere else. Somewhere without Jesus. Somewhere I will feel more comfortable.
I don’t know exactly which one of these you deal with. But I do know that Jesus is still King. I know that if we are willing to come to him we can find life
Not feeling trapped by habits and sins.
Not feeling ashamed and guilty because of secrets
Not thinking we are worthless.
We find forgiveness and truth and acceptance and love when we learn to know and believe Jesus as the God Man Servant King.
