In this final part of our study on 1 John, John is wrapping up by telling us 4 helps when considering the Christian life
Believers have eternal life (5:11-13)
God answers Prayer (5:14-15)
Christians do not practice sin ()
The Christian life is the real life (5:20-21)
Believers have eternal life (11-13)
Eternal life is a gift
It is not something we earn or deserve
We see at the beginning of chp. 5 how God gave witness to His Son how we have eternal life
HE also gives witness to US as believers
God wants us to know that eternal life comes from Him
NOt just know it, but celebrate it!
Because we know we have eternal life FROM Him
We know we belong TO him
It would be helpful at this point to review the characteristics of God’s children:
•“Everyone also who practices righteousness is born of Him” (1 John 2:29, NASB).
•“No one who is born of God practices sin” (1 John 3:9, NASB).
•“We know that we have passed out of death into life, because we love the brethren” (1 John 3:14, NASB).
•“Beloved, let us love one another, for love is from God; and everyone who loves is born of God and knows God” (1 John 4:7, NASB).
•“For whatsoever is born of God overcometh the world” (1 John 5:4).
If you bear these “birthmarks,” you can say with confidence that you are a child of God.
God Answers Prayer (5:14-15)
God answers our prayer
we can come to him and have confidence
Confidence here basically means Freedom of Speech
We can come to the father and tell him our needs
OF course, there are conditions we must meet
Our heart cannot condemn us (3:21-22)
WE must pray God’s will be done
Christians do not practice sin (5:16-19)
This is not talking about occasional sin
This is talking about habitual sins
A christian does not have an appetite for sin
3 things constnatly battling us
World
Flesh
Devil
I john 5:18 is our way to overcome sin
Christian life is the real life (5:20-21)
We understand that God is real
He gives the Christian understanding to realize he is real
When we understand He is real and true we can dwell in Him
A Christian has “turned to God from idols to serve the living and true God” (1 Thes.
1:9).
Idols are dead, but Christ is the living God.
Idols are false, but Christ is the true God.
This is the secret of the life that is real!
So John’s admonition, “Keep yourselves from idols,” can be paraphrased, “Watch out for the imitation and the artificial and be real!”
