Scripture Reading

2 Timothy 3:1–4:5 NIV84
1 But mark this: There will be terrible times in the last days. 2 People will be lovers of themselves, lovers of money, boastful, proud, abusive, disobedient to their parents, ungrateful, unholy, 3 without love, unforgiving, slanderous, without self-control, brutal, not lovers of the good, 4 treacherous, rash, conceited, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God— 5 having a form of godliness but denying its power. Have nothing to do with them. 6 They are the kind who worm their way into homes and gain control over weak-willed women, who are loaded down with sins and are swayed by all kinds of evil desires, 7 always learning but never able to acknowledge the truth. 8 Just as Jannes and Jambres opposed Moses, so also these men oppose the truth—men of depraved minds, who, as far as the faith is concerned, are rejected. 9 But they will not get very far because, as in the case of those men, their folly will be clear to everyone. 10 You, however, know all about my teaching, my way of life, my purpose, faith, patience, love, endurance, 11 persecutions, sufferings—what kinds of things happened to me in Antioch, Iconium and Lystra, the persecutions I endured. Yet the Lord rescued me from all of them. 12 In fact, everyone who wants to live a godly life in Christ Jesus will be persecuted, 13 while evil men and impostors will go from bad to worse, deceiving and being deceived. 14 But as for you, continue in what you have learned and have become convinced of, because you know those from whom you learned it, 15 and how from infancy you have known the holy Scriptures, which are able to make you wise for salvation through faith in Christ Jesus. 16 All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, 17 so that the man of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work. 1 In the presence of God and of Christ Jesus, who will judge the living and the dead, and in view of his appearing and his kingdom, I give you this charge: 2 Preach the Word; be prepared in season and out of season; correct, rebuke and encourage—with great patience and careful instruction. 3 For the time will come when men will not put up with sound doctrine. Instead, to suit their own desires, they will gather around them a great number of teachers to say what their itching ears want to hear. 4 They will turn their ears away from the truth and turn aside to myths. 5 But you, keep your head in all situations, endure hardship, do the work of an evangelist, discharge all the duties of your ministry.

Introduction

We come today to a very important subject in terms of practical discernment within our modern day of Christianity.
In the world today, there is a movement underway that is holding to various teachings that are not aligned with Scripture, a movement that I would suggest is exceedingly dangerous.
The name of the movement is the New Apostolic Reformation (NAR).
The NAR is an umbrella term for a large variety of churches, but they are influenced by and engaging in various teachings that are at their core unscriptural.
Reports indicate that there are more than 369 million adherents of this movement throughout the world.
Most would not know that they belong to something called the NAR.
What is the NAR?
As I’ve said, NAR stands for New Apostolic Reformation.
It’s called apostolic because its leaders claim they’re restoring the lost office of apostle to the church—an office endowed with astonishing authority, miraculous powers, and divine strategies for establishing God’s kingdom on earth.
It’s a reformation because proponents say the movement will completely change the way church is done, and its effects will be as great—or even greater than—the sixteenth-century Protestant Reformation. [1]
I wouldn’t really say that it’s “New”, “Apostolic” or a “Reformation.”
Because this is a non-denominational movement, the key way that it can be identified is through certain key teachings that are held to.
Today, I’m going to outline 6 key “features” of the NAR churches.
5-fold Ministry
Kingdom Now Theology / Dominionism / 7-mountain mandate
Focus on Destiny / Presence / Glory
Revival
Unity
Denial of the Sufficiency of Scripture
Today we will be looking from a birds’ eye view at what these distinctive features / teachings are, and then I’ll also briefly outline why these teachings are problematic.
In the coming weeks, I will go into a lot more detail on particular aspects - next week specifically, I want us to look more closely at the Five-fold ministry.
Before we begin to look at the NAR, some important comments up front:
I want to be gracious as I share my concerns, and as I warn you as the body about this movement. (And yet I must be bold)
Not everyone involved in the NAR is involved to the same degree (and again, many don’t realise what the NAR is).
Not all are aware that the teaching being brought to them is in error
Many are sincere and devout believers.
Many want to know Christ / the truth... and they truly believe that this is His working.
These people have a passion for Christ and are enthusiastic, which is great. Unfortunately much of that passion is misdirected, and has misplaced emphases
That said, we cannot ignore the movement in the hope that mere enthusiasm and excitement will honour Christ.

1. 5-fold Ministry

The first key teaching of this movement is that which is known as the 5-fold ministry.
They get the phrase “5-fold ministry” from Ephesians 4:11:
Ephesians 4:11 NIV84
11 It was he who gave some to be apostles, some to be prophets, some to be evangelists, and some to be pastors and teachers,
In that verse, they claim, is a demonstration that God has instituted 5 distinct offices in the church that are to be exercised for the building up of the body.
Those 5 are: Apostles, Prophets, Evangelists, Pastors and Teachers.
The claim of these churches is that the particular offices of Apostle and Prophet were lost after the first century through much of church history, and that God is now restoring these offices to the church in order to usher in Christ’s kingdom in the world.
C. Peter Wagner is the key “Apostle” behind this movement in its early years. He says this:
We are now living in the midst of one of the most epochal changes in the structure of the Church that has ever been recorded. I like to call it the “Second Apostolic Age.” [2]
In the year 2001 (which was the year that the NAR was really birthed), Wagner went on to state the following:
“For the first time this side of the initial few centuries of the Church, a critical mass of the Body of Christ once again recognizes the contemporary gifts and offices of apostle and prophet,” [3]
In this context, Wagner was simply stating that a substantial numbers were holding to the view of there being apostles and prophets in the church.
I’m not going to spend a lot of time now presenting what I believe is the true biblical position on this matter - reason being that I will go into more detail next week on this topic.
But for now, I would say that the Apostles and Prophets that were spoken of in the Bible had a particular function to fulfill, and once that task was complete, there was no further need for those particular functions.
Primarily I would point to Ephesians 2:19-20...
Ephesians 2:19–20 NIV84
19 Consequently, you are no longer foreigners and aliens, but fellow citizens with God’s people and members of God’s household, 20 built on the foundation of the apostles and prophets, with Christ Jesus himself as the chief cornerstone.
The work of the Apostles and Prophets in the first century was essentially foundational, out of which the New Testament church would grow.
One particular group that supports these Apostles tells that their function is as follows:
Apostles move primarily in the gifts of healing, faith, working of miracles, word of wisdom, discerning of spirits, and (sometimes) prophecy.
In a modern church setting, they would oversee the development and sending of apostolic teams for miracle ministries, as well as activating, imparting and demonstrating the apostolic anointing to other bodies of believers. [4]
As I read that, I wonder if you hear all sorts of language that has nothing to do with Scripture.
“Activating...”
“Imparting...”
“Apostolic Anointing...”
What I’d say at this point is that these ideas are not found in God’s word.
What I would say is that these guys heavily focus on the miraculous… performing miracles.
Very little, if anything, is said in that particular description of teaching.
But wasn’t that the key work of the Apostles?
Consider the following verses, just in the book of Acts...
Acts 4:1–2 NIV84
1 The priests and the captain of the temple guard and the Sadducees came up to Peter and John while they were speaking to the people. 2 They were greatly disturbed because the apostles were teaching the people and proclaiming in Jesus the resurrection of the dead.
Acts 5:25 NIV84
25 Then someone came and said, “Look! The men you put in jail are standing in the temple courts teaching the people.”
Acts 5:41–42 NIV84
41 The apostles left the Sanhedrin, rejoicing because they had been counted worthy of suffering disgrace for the Name. 42 Day after day, in the temple courts and from house to house, they never stopped teaching and proclaiming the good news that Jesus is the Christ.
Acts 18:9–10 NIV84
9 One night the Lord spoke to Paul in a vision: “Do not be afraid; keep on speaking, do not be silent. 10 For I am with you, and no one is going to attack and harm you, because I have many people in this city.”

2. Kingdom Now Theology / Dominionism / 7-mountain mandate

The second key teaching feature of the NAR is Dominionism (Kingdom Now).
What the leaders of this movement have been emphasizing and urging people towards is preparing things in this world so that Christ can come back and set up His final rule and reign on earth.
The NAR promotes the idea that Jesus is waiting to return to the world, but that before He will do this, He needs these Apostles and Prophets in this day to give new divine revelation that is needed to set up God’s kingdom on earth.
It is thus the task of the church, under the leadership of the Apostles and prophets (who hold nearly unquestionable authority), to take dominion of the earth.
The way in which these Apostles and Prophets say that they are to do this is through taking dominion of what is known as the 7 spheres (mountains) of influence.
7-mountain mandate!!
The seven mountains are the following:
Government
Media
Entertainment
Education
Business
Family
Religion.
The idea of dominion theology comes from Genesis 1:28, where God tells Adam that he is to have “dominion” over the created world.
The trouble this verse in this way is that this was not a message to the church, to have dominion over the unchurched.
It was a message to Adam to have dominion over the animals and birds, and to rule over the rest of creation apart from man.
That command / instruction was never given to be exercised over any other man, let alone over 7 spheres of influence in the world.
It’s simply taking a verse and using it to prop up a pre-conceived theology.
Kingdom Now adherents believe that long ago Satan stole the “keys of spiritual dominion” when he deceived Adam and Eve.
Then, when Christ gave the “keys of the kingdom” to Peter in Matthew 16:19, it was a sign that dominion had been returned to man.
Now it is our job to “take back” what is rightfully ours – that is, to claim dominion over the earth and spiritually subdue it for Christ.
C. Peter Wagner says this concerning Dominion Theology:
"Our theological bedrock is what has been known as Dominion Theology. This means that our divine mandate is to do whatever is necessary, by the power of the Holy Spirit, to retake the dominion of God's creation which Adam forfeited to Satan in the Garden of Eden. It is nothing less than seeing God's kingdom coming and His will being done here on earth as it is in heaven." [5]
Bill Johnson of Bethel church in Redding California has written a book “When Heaven Invades Earth” wherein he espouses some of this theology.
The problem with this entire theology is that Christ actually turned His disciples away from any idea that His Kingdom should be established in this world in the physical sense.
John 8:23 NIV84
23 But he continued, “You are from below; I am from above. You are of this world; I am not of this world.
Hebrews 13:14 NIV84
14 For here we do not have an enduring city, but we are looking for the city that is to come.
1 Corinthians 7:31 NIV84
31 those who use the things of the world, as if not engrossed in them. For this world in its present form is passing away.
1 John 2:17 NIV84
17 The world and its desires pass away, but the man who does the will of God lives forever.
Colossians 3:2–4 NIV84
2 Set your minds on things above, not on earthly things. 3 For you died, and your life is now hidden with Christ in God. 4 When Christ, who is your life, appears, then you also will appear with him in glory.

Strategic Level Spiritual Warfare

Another way that the New Apostolic Reformation crowd hopes to gain Dominion is through Strategic Level Spiritual Warfare (SLSW).
SLSW encompasses a whole host of spiritual practices.
Some of these practices include: prayer mapping, prayer journeys, prayer walking, warfare prayer/worship, binding territorial demons, identificational repentance, breaking generational curses, and deliverance.
What they teach is that as long as the territorial spirits are in control, no major advances can be made in sharing the gospel or transforming society.
So the spirits must be neutralized or cast out.
Then, entire nations of people will respond en masse to the gospel, and the church will reap the greatest harvest of souls in history.
NAR leaders say that territorial spirits cannot be ignored.
And because they are so powerful, they can’t be cast out by ordinary Christians.
This is where apostles come in.
NAR leaders teach that the apostle alone has the authority to cast out territorial spirits.
Something I’ve never read the Apostles in the Bible doing… They simply proclaimed the Gospel.
All I’ll point out further in this regard is that these practices are based on cherry-picked verses that are horribly twisted to suit their teachings.
Breaking Strongholds...
Breakthroughs...

3. Focus on Destiny / Presence / Glory

Another emphasis that you will find in the NAR churches is a focus on destiny.
Sometimes they’ll talk of your “Dream Destiny”...
One example of this is from what is called the “Church of the Nations” (one of these is in the Eastern Cape in South Africa).
On their website, they say this concerning themselves:
“So we see local churches reaching their destiny when aligned to an apostolic vision. This allows Jesus to fulfill His promise when He said, “I will build my church and the gates of hell will not prevail against it”
The apostolic vision was in fact presented by real apostles and recorded in scripture.
Local churches reach their destiny by teaching and obeying scripture, not by aligning with the vision of current day apostles who receive extra biblical instructions directly from God.
In many places today, this “destiny” includes sufferings, imprisonment and martyrdom, a far cry from the American dream that has conveniently become the NAR envisioned destiny.
If you go into Christian book stores, you will find multiple books on Dream Destinies.
It’s all about you unlocking your dreams.... What dream has God given you to go an fulfill in your life?
Some examples of this:
From Dream to Destiny: Keys to Unlock your Future
Dream Big in 3D: How to Pursue a Bold, Innovative, God-Inspired Life!
Believe that you Can. It’s time to make it happen! Moving with tenacity toward the DREAM GOD has given you. (Jentezen Franklin)
Pursuing your God-Given Dreams. Finding and Chasing After your Dream: A Biblical Approach
Birthing Your Dreams. God’s Plan for Living Victoriously (Paula White).
Dreaming With God (Bill Johnson)
Hold on to your Dream. Every God-Given dream is meant to be fulfilled! (Caretha Crawford)
The Joseph Blessing. Change the World with your God-Given Dream
If I had to ask, what is the key focus of all of these books?
It’s all about you.
What is your dream…?
What is your destiny…?
It’s convenient to put God on the end and attribute the dream and the vision to Him… but really?
Why don’t we go to the Scriptures to find out what God wants from us?

4. Revival

The next key mark of this movement is “revival” - and that on a massive scale.
There is a strong emphasis on an “end times harvest” through a great awakening that we can usher in.
The movement thrives on hype… the next big thing… God is working and moving powerfully!!
But the key emphasis again on this revival is a supernatural working of the spirit that is certainly not comparable to that in the New Testament (or anywhere else in Scripture).
Part of this is a teaching known as “Joel’s Army”.
This Joel’s Army is a movement that is closely related to what was called the “Latter Rain” Movement which began in the 1940s.
Joel’s Army teaches that an army of soldiers of Christ will be raised up by God in the last days to perform miracles, execute judgment on unbelievers, and take dominion on earth before Christ returns.
Rick Joyner, a popular purveyor of the Joel’s Army doctrine, writes of a time when “news teams will follow apostles like national leaders, recording great miracles. . . .
Miracles which exceed even some of the most spectacular Biblical marvels will cause whole nations to acknowledge Jesus. . . .
The appearances of angels will be so common that they will cease to be related as significant events.
The Lord Himself will appear to councils of apostles and elders to give them directives. . . .
Young children will cast out demons, heal the sick, raise the dead, and divert raging floods with a word.
Some will actually take dominion over entire hospitals and mental institutions, healing every patient in them by laying hands on the buildings” (The Harvest, 1993, p. 32–34) [6]
I’ve watched numerous prophecies being given on video, and the striking similarity between these prophecies is that they proclaim good things for the people that they prophesy to.
Your nation is going to be great.
We are at a turning point right now, and God is about to show you a great awakening in this year...
And on, and on, and on they go…
Often these revivals are held in stadiums and reach millions around the world via live stream technology; they are marketed and produced like rock concerts.
Just last week, there was a massive gathering in Orlando, Florida.
A large group of apostles and prophets gathered together at a stadium, stirring up the crowds to go out and work for the Gospel.
And the rock concerts to go with it…
What about true revival?
2 Chronicles 7:14 NIV84
14 if my people, who are called by my name, will humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then will I hear from heaven and will forgive their sin and will heal their land.

True Revival involves preaching / explanation of God’s word

Nehemiah 9:1–5 NIV84
1 On the twenty-fourth day of the same month, the Israelites gathered together, fasting and wearing sackcloth and having dust on their heads. 2 Those of Israelite descent had separated themselves from all foreigners. They stood in their places and confessed their sins and the wickedness of their fathers. 3 They stood where they were and read from the Book of the Law of the Lord their God for a quarter of the day, and spent another quarter in confession and in worshiping the Lord their God. 4 Standing on the stairs were the Levites—Jeshua, Bani, Kadmiel, Shebaniah, Bunni, Sherebiah, Bani and Kenani—who called with loud voices to the Lord their God. 5 And the Levites—Jeshua, Kadmiel, Bani, Hashabneiah, Sherebiah, Hodiah, Shebaniah and Pethahiah—said: “Stand up and praise the Lord your God, who is from everlasting to everlasting.” “Blessed be your glorious name, and may it be exalted above all blessing and praise.
Note the above also - conviction of sin!!
Acts 2:42 NIV84
42 They devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching and to the fellowship, to the breaking of bread and to prayer.

5. Unity

Another hallmark of this movement is Unity (at the expense of biblical doctrine)
Repeatedly you will hear calls for unity, coming together for the sake of bringing Heaven to Earth
Repeatedly you will hear them talking about forgetting denominational lines.
The idea is to draw people into these large gatherings and motivate them and inspire them to go out and proclaim freedom.
They argue that spiritual unity is something that Jesus asked the Father for in John 17:20-23...
John 17:20–23 NIV84
20 “My prayer is not for them alone. I pray also for those who will believe in me through their message, 21 that all of them may be one, Father, just as you are in me and I am in you. May they also be in us so that the world may believe that you have sent me. 22 I have given them the glory that you gave me, that they may be one as we are one: 23 I in them and you in me. May they be brought to complete unity to let the world know that you sent me and have loved them even as you have loved me.
Sounds Biblical. Sounds correct.
But the question is, what is the unity that they are after? On what basis? What is the grounds for the unity?
There was a well-known conference organised some time back in America - “Together 2016”.
One blog author correctly pointed out the fallacy of the unity that was being called for there. She writes...
the problem is, the event’s so-called unity is not unity at all.
Why? Because vastly different agendas are being clouded by the ambiguous language surrounding the event.
The language is unclear in many areas.
Take the catch phrase “change our nation,” for example.
What type of change, exactly, is envisioned? Fill in the blank.
And what about “spiritual awakening”?
The participants are using this phrase, but with vastly different understandings of what it means.
For Roman Catholics, “spiritual awakening” surely includes the need for Protestants to return to the fold.
For people in the NAR, “spiritual awakening” includes the need to submit to the authority of NAR apostles and prophets, receive their new revelations, and work miracles.
But these Catholic and NAR notions of “spiritual awakening” are very different from the type of spiritual awakening typically spoken of by more traditional evangelicals.
They probably are thinking mostly about the need for people to place their trust in Jesus for salvation from sin.
Don’t be deceived: this isn’t unity. This is whatever you want it to be–in the name of Jesus. [7]

6. Denial of the Sufficiency of Scripture

NAR adherents may believe in the inerrancy and authority of the Bible, but what they don’t believe in is the sufficiency of God’s word.
The extent of extra-biblical revelations to the apostles and prophets is a demonstration that God’s word simply is insufficient for our day.
The fact that you need these apostles and prophets if you’re going to walk in step with God is simply Gnosticism - a spiritually elite band of people that are in the know!!
It’s also strange and noteworthy that the NAR movement has a new translation that they’re using, called the Passion Translation.
This translation of the Bible was written by Apostle Brian Simmons.
Simmons claims that, in 2009, Jesus Christ literally visited him in his room, breathed on him, and commissioned him to write a new translation of the Bible. He claims that, by blowing on him, Jesus gave him “the spirit of revelation.”
He says:
“he breathed on me so that I would do the project, and I felt downloads coming, instantly. I received downloads. It was like, I got a chip put inside of me. I got a connection inside of me to hear him better, to understand the scriptures better and hopefully to translate.”
The Passion Translation is filled with problematic words that have a very specific NAR ring to them.
“Impartation” - the NAR idea that Apostles can impart certain gifts to their students
Apostles “decreeing” things over the church - the NAR idea that the Apostles do not request God to do things, they decree things, and God works, because the Apostles have authority.
All sorts of problems.
Brain Simmons also claims to have gone to heaven, where he saw a book in heaven titled John 22 - he claims that this is further revelation from God that will be given to him when he’s ready (note, there are only 21 chapters in the book of John).
Rather than denying the sufficiency of Scripture, we should be affirming it.
2 Timothy 3:16–17 NIV84
16 All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, 17 so that the man of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work.
Psalm 19:7–11 NIV84
7 The law of the Lord is perfect, reviving the soul. The statutes of the Lord are trustworthy, making wise the simple. 8 The precepts of the Lord are right, giving joy to the heart. The commands of the Lord are radiant, giving light to the eyes. 9 The fear of the Lord is pure, enduring forever. The ordinances of the Lord are sure and altogether righteous. 10 They are more precious than gold, than much pure gold; they are sweeter than honey, than honey from the comb. 11 By them is your servant warned; in keeping them there is great reward.
Psalm 119:105 NIV84
105 Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light for my path.
Psalm 119:11 NIV84
11 I have hidden your word in my heart that I might not sin against you.

South Africa Not Immune

As we begin to draw to a close, I need to say that South Africa is by no means immune to this teaching.
The teaching has infiltrated churches worldwide, including in South Africa.
Obviously with the internet, and being able to jump on an aeroplane and fly anywhere within a matter of hours makes propagation of this teaching quite easy.
I just want to point out to examples of this in South Africa.

Angus Buchan

The first is Angus Buchan.
So well known in South Africa.
So loved by so many people, and certainly he’s a very likable chap.
He calls people to pray, and urges them to turn away from sin.
But he’s being influences greatly by these teachings that I’ve outlined today.
In terms of prophets and apostles, He linked up with the apostle Rick Joyner (MorningStar ministries)
The purpose of joining him was for what was known as the prophetic and apostolic conference.
In the buildup to one of his “It’s Time” prayer gatherings, there was a video encouraging people to attend, and one of the key requests in that video (which was a lady speaking) they emphasized that we should get people from these 7 sphere’s of influence (7-mountain mandate) to come and attend.
If you listen to Angus Buchan, you’ll quickly get a sense of this “dominionism” / Kingdom Now theology.
You also hear from time to time Angus speaking about “waiting for the manifestation of the sons of God.”
This is a “Latter Rain” movement teaching - twisting a verse in Romans.
In one of his devotionals, he writes:
The Lord says that the glory of the latter house will be greater than that of the former. That is so exciting! It means that the Lord is going to do a mightier miracle than He did in the early days.
God has performed many amazing miracles. Remember, He took the Israelites out of Egypt and through the desert, and fed and clothed them for 40 years. Their clothes never even wore out. But the Lord says that the latter rain will be greater than the former.
Friends, God is on the move. People are hungry for Him! [8]

ACDP and Chuck Pierce

Not so long ago, we had the American Prophet Chuck Pierce come and speak in Parliament.
From what I’ve been able to establish, that was arranged by the ACDP… but even if not, the fact is, he was there, in parliament.
This specific prophet is president of Global Spheres, Inc., and president of Glory of Zion International Ministries.
He is an influential prophet and was chosen by C. Peter Wagner to be his successor and take over Wagner’s Global Harvest Ministries (which Pierce renamed Global Spheres, Inc.).
So the person who took over from C. Peter Wagner (who is a key figure, and probably the founder of the New Apostolic Reformation) was in South Africa and actually prophesying over South Africa.
Apart from these, there are numerous prophets and apostles (self-proclaimed of course) operating in South Africa.

So What?!

A call to exercise much greater discernment.
We really need to be thinking carefully through what is being fed to us.
We must exercise this spiritual discernment if we are going to stay true to God’s word.
This leads me to a further point of emphasis - get into God’s word.
History repeats itself… the undermining of the Word of God is what drives people to false teachings.
One baby step away from God’s word is simply the start of the slide into false doctrines and teachings.
Again, I don’t say that everyone in the NAR-type teachings is destined to destruction.
There are those who love Christ, and I believe are truly saved.
But the dangers of this movement should not be underestimated.
I’m truly concerned that literally millions of people (particularly young people) have been deceived into thinking that they serve Christ, when they do not truly know Christ.
We must be diligent in our study of God’s word.
