Overview of Hebrews

Class 2

Prayer requests

What kind of literature is Hebrews?

Epistle or a letter.

Who wrote Hebrews?

It is significant that the writer includes himself among those people who had received confirmation of Christ’s message from others (). That would seem to rule out someone like Paul who claimed that he had received such confirmation directly from God and not from men (). Those who heard were the Apostles, those in Judea, and the region of Galilee The author of Hebrews is a person in authority over their church or group of people he is writing to.
NASB95how will we escape if we neglect so great a salvation? After it was at the first spoken through the Lord, it was confirmed to us by those who heard,
A man who was well versed in the law and temple sacrifice. We can assume it is not one of the Apostles ()
NASB95how will we escape if we neglect so great a salvation? After it was at the first spoken through the Lord, it was confirmed to us by those who heard, God also testifying with them, both by signs and wonders and by various miracles and by gifts of the Holy Spirit according to His own will.
Ultimately, of course, the author was the Holy Spirit ().
NASB95for no prophecy was ever made by an act of human will, but men moved by the Holy Spirit spoke from God.
NASB95for no prophecy was ever made by an act of human will, but men moved by the Holy Spirit spoke from God.

When was Hebrews written?

Author wrote of temple and sacrifices in the present tense. Hebrews was written during a time of persecution.
NASB95But remember the former days, when, after being enlightened, you endured a great conflict of sufferings, partly by being made a public spectacle through reproaches and tribulations, and partly by becoming sharers with those who were so treated.
When was the temple destroyed? (ad 70) by Rome Timothy had just been released from prison ()
NASB95Take notice that our brother Timothy has been released, with whom, if he comes soon, I will see you.

Who was Hebrews written to?

Emphases on the Levitical priesthood and on sacrifices, as well as the absence of any reference to the Gentiles, support the conclusion that a community of Hebrews was the recipient of the epistle. One thing is clear from the contents of the epistle: the community of Hebrews was facing the possibility of intensified persecution (10:32–39; 12:4).
