1 Chronicles 4:9–10 NKJV
9 Now Jabez was more honorable than his brothers, and his mother called his name Jabez, saying, “Because I bore him in pain.” 10 And Jabez called on the God of Israel saying, “Oh, that You would bless me indeed, and enlarge my territory, that Your hand would be with me, and that You would keep me from evil, that I may not cause pain!” So God granted him what he requested.
Temptation to look down on those whose activities have less honor.

1. More honorable - Worthy of Honor, honest, upright.

Hebrew word Kaw badi - to be heavy. Numerous, rich, abounding with blessing. He stood out… had a different set of values. He took a different road.
A man of Judah introduced as a man without family connections.

2. He was raised with a negative mother

His mother gave him a name that means… pain in the neck. He had to overcome obstacles… maybe low self esteem...
His mother bore him in sorrow. Physical or mental

3. He cried out

He prayed a fervent prayer.
James 5:16 NKJV
16 Confess your trespasses to one another, and pray for one another, that you may be healed. The effective, fervent prayer of a righteous man avails much.
James 5
He made four request in his prayer

1. Bless me indeed.

That sounds a little selfish, but in a Biblical sense, Bless means to ask for or to impart supernatural favor. He left it up to God what the blessings would be, when they could come and how.
Proverbs 10:22 NLT
22 The blessing of the Lord makes a person rich, and he adds no sorrow with it.
The Lord’s blessing is our greatest wealth and all of our work adds nothing to it.
Moses asked God to show him favor
Exodus 33:18 NLT
18 Moses responded, “Then show me your glorious presence.”
He wanted a more intimate understanding of God.
God describes himself as merciful, gracious longsuffering and abounding in goodness and truth.
Ex 34:
Exodus 34:5–7 NLT
5 Then the Lord came down in a cloud and stood there with him; and he called out his own name, Yahweh. 6 The Lord passed in front of Moses, calling out, “Yahweh! The Lord! The God of compassion and mercy! I am slow to anger and filled with unfailing love and faithfulness. 7 I lavish unfailing love to a thousand generations. I forgive iniquity, rebellion, and sin. But I do not excuse the guilty. I lay the sins of the parents upon their children and grandchildren; the entire family is affected— even children in the third and fourth generations.”
ILL - Arnold Palmer was asked to play in a golf tournament in Saudi Arabia. He was there 4 days. Afterward the king wanted to give him a gift. Arnold told him a golf club would be nice. Later Arnold Palmer received a piece of paper that was the deed to a Golf Club. Arnold was expecting a club… not a club. But the King had bigger vision.

2. Enlarge my Territory.

Ask god to enlarge your life so you can make a greater impact for Him. Greater influence… greater opportunities…
EG: Tuesday Governors Mansion
EG: Newspaper article - so many calls… so may church groups trying to keep up
Prayer - that your abilities & resources increase.
Send someone who needs me

3. That your hand would be on me.

“I can’t God...”
He wants our dependance on him. Failure is guaranteed unless God steps in.
2 Corinthians 3:5–6 NLT
5 It is not that we think we are qualified to do anything on our own. Our qualification comes from God. 6 He has enabled us to be ministers of his new covenant. This is a covenant not of written laws, but of the Spirit. The old written covenant ends in death; but under the new covenant, the Spirit gives life.
2 CO
Natural progression - more blessing, more territory - need for Supernatural power.
Matthew 28:19–20 NLT
19 Therefore, go and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit. 20 Teach these new disciples to obey all the commands I have given you. And be sure of this: I am with you always, even to the end of the age.”
God’s presence and power

4. Keep me from Evil that I may not cause pain.

Success brings with it a greater opportunity for failure. More supernatural service… more spiritual attacks on you and your family.
eg: Renis Waters evil choices
Bad company corrupts good morals.
1 Corinthians 15:33 NLT
33 Don’t be fooled by those who say such things, for “bad company corrupts good character.”
1 CO

5. God Granted his request.

John 12:25–26 NLT
25 Those who love their life in this world will lose it. Those who care nothing for their life in this world will keep it for eternity. 26 Anyone who wants to serve me must follow me, because my servants must be where I am. And the Father will honor anyone who serves me.
John 12:2
2 Chronicles 16:9 NLT
9 The eyes of the Lord search the whole earth in order to strengthen those whose hearts are fully committed to him. What a fool you have been! From now on you will be at war.”
Are you blessable?
eg: Paul and Christian
