Shallow small groups… fake Christians… Real christianity look like?

Prayer

real authentic growth toward you God.

Message

2 Part Message - at least!
9-13 = inside
14-21 = outside
Romans 12:9–21 ESV
9 Let love be genuine. Abhor what is evil; hold fast to what is good. 10 Love one another with brotherly affection. Outdo one another in showing honor. 11 Do not be slothful in zeal, be fervent in spirit, serve the Lord. 12 Rejoice in hope, be patient in tribulation, be constant in prayer. 13 Contribute to the needs of the saints and seek to show hospitality. 14 Bless those who persecute you; bless and do not curse them. 15 Rejoice with those who rejoice, weep with those who weep. 16 Live in harmony with one another. Do not be haughty, but associate with the lowly. Never be wise in your own sight. 17 Repay no one evil for evil, but give thought to do what is honorable in the sight of all. 18 If possible, so far as it depends on you, live peaceably with all. 19 Beloved, never avenge yourselves, but leave it to the wrath of God, for it is written, “Vengeance is mine, I will repay, says the Lord.” 20 To the contrary, “if your enemy is hungry, feed him; if he is thirsty, give him something to drink; for by so doing you will heap burning coals on his head.” 21 Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good.

Stott, John R. W. The Message of Romans: God’s Good News for the World. The Bible Speaks Today. Leicester, England; Downers Grove, IL: InterVarsity Press, 2001.
The fact that Paul writes this list means that our hearts are bent in the opposite direction!!
Sincerity
9a - Love = agape - unique use in christian love, selfless, giving, continues,
genuine = un-hypocritical = play acting
the kiss of Judas
When you interact with other Christians how do you feel about it? Are you genuine?
When you interact with non-christians how do you feel about it? Are you genuine?
Discernment
9b - Abhor / Hold Fast = strong verbs - action words
Abhor what is evil;
abhor = loathing, detesting, vileness - active removal
hold fast = same word Jesus uses to describe a married couple / glueing
hold fast to what is good.
How do we know what is evil and what is good?
do we really hate it? do we really want it?
Are you growing in your abilities of discernment?
How do we grow in our discernment?
How do we practice “hate sin but love the sinner”?
Affection
10a = 1 command with 2 types of familial affection
Love one another with brotherly affection.
Philistorgoi = mother or father for child
Philadelphia = brotherly love
How do you view the church? Club / Organization / Family?
How would your interactions with ABC change if you viewed it more as a family?
How might you practice love like this?
Honor
10b = 2x one another | Outdo = preeminence
= a mothers request / not so with you!!
Outdo one another in showing honor.
Phil 2.3
Philippians 2:3 ESV
3 Do nothing from selfish ambition or conceit, but in humility count others more significant than yourselves.
How do you view others? Image bearers?
Are you easily offended?
what does showing honor look like to you? what would bring you honor?
Can you be rebuked? Are you teachable?
How might your marriage, parenting, friendships, leadership, change if you practiced this?
Enthusiasm
11a = Slothful/Zeal / Fervent
slothful = lazyness
What comes to mind when you hear the word zealous? = positive / negative
zeal according to knowledge! = busy in the Lords work, not just busy.
Fervent = a boiling pot
in Spirit!! = who is doing the work? Who are you relying on?
How much more effort would you have to put into the things you do to say that it is done with enthusiasm?
Service
11b = 5/6 = hand and glove
serve = to slave!
What are you currently doing for Jesus? = If he followed you around for a week would He be pleased?
With what attitude are you doing what you are doing? = eager? angry?
Why are you doing what you are doing? Is it for Jesus or is it for yourself?
Hope
12a = Rejoice… in… hope
Do not be slothful in zeal,
Early christians had little to rejoice about.
= hope in Gods glory
Where are you finding your Joy?
Where are you finding your Hope?
what about the single mom trying to provide, protect, and pursue
what about the widow, what about the single mom, what about the prisoner, what about the infirm, what about the abused child?
Patience
12b = Patient in tribulation
patience = not passivity / active steadfast endurance
tribulation = deep serious affliction
not just don’t get angry in bad traffic or in the secretary of state line.
not just having a good attitude when the pay-stub is late or the boss makes another mandatory shift.
Psalm 13 ESV
To the choirmaster. A Psalm of David. 1 How long, O Lord? Will you forget me forever? How long will you hide your face from me? 2 How long must I take counsel in my soul and have sorrow in my heart all the day? How long shall my enemy be exalted over me? 3 Consider and answer me, O Lord my God; light up my eyes, lest I sleep the sleep of death, 4 lest my enemy say, “I have prevailed over him,” lest my foes rejoice because I am shaken. 5 But I have trusted in your steadfast love; my heart shall rejoice in your salvation. 6 I will sing to the Lord, because he has dealt bountifully with me.
do you find yourself being classified as “actively steadfast in endurance”?
if you struggle with patience when and why?
When you are impatient with people and situations what is it that you want but aren’t getting?
Prayerfulness
be fervent in spirit,
12c = constant in prayer
not flare prayer...
this is to be a way of life...
you can only make it through this list with prayer / faith
what does your prayer life look like? what does it say about your faith?
what does consistent prayer look like to you and why did you come to that conclusion?
do you know how to pray?
do you know what you should be praying for?
Generosity
serve the Lord.
13a = Contribute to the needs of the saints
contribute = share / do together = GK - koinonia = fellowship = same root starting point
Rejoice in hope,
saints = all those who belong to Christ - not just catholic saints “sainthood”
Is Paul talking about more then just cutting a check?
Would you say you are fulfilling this command given by the HS through Paul?
how might the fulfilling of this type of “sharing together” of the needs of one another look if we practiced it here at ABC?
Acts 4:34–35 ESV
34 There was not a needy person among them, for as many as were owners of lands or houses sold them and brought the proceeds of what was sold 35 and laid it at the apostles’ feet, and it was distributed to each as any had need.
Hospitality
13b = seek to show hospitality
seek = pursue, follow in haste, press forward,
be patient in tribulation,
hospitality = care for strangers
Think of first century travel…
Americans view of hospitality… / Biblical view of hospitality…

Calvin commented, “It generally happens that those who are more weighed down by poverty than others and stand in need of help are treated with greatest contempt.”

Leenhardt reflects that “Christian hospitality must inconvenience us more than that of the world; we do not choose our time or our guests”. Paul is not advocating a pleasant social exercise among friends, but the use of one’s home to help even people we do not know, if that will advance God’s cause.

What might be some of your reasons to not “seek to show hospitality”?
How might your family change, this church change, this city change if we did?
What can / should / does that look like for us here at ABC?
Move to outsiders…? Or is it?
Grace
14 = Bless those who persecute you; bless and do not curse them.
Bless those who persecute you; bless and do not curse them
Bless = call for God to bless them / speak well of / act kindly toward
; = Jesus says…
be constant in prayer.
not simply don’t retaliate… forgive! / actively seek their good!
repeated phrase x2
Jaron Lowenstein = Country Music Artist = “Pray For You”...
I haven't been to church since I don't remember when Things were going great til they fell apart again So I listened to the preacher as he told me what to do
He said you can't go hatin' others who have done wrong to you Sometimes we get angry but we must not condemn Let the good Lord do his job, you just pray for them I pray your brakes go out runnin' down a hill I pray a flower pot falls from a window sill
And knocks you in the head like I'd like to I pray your birthday comes and nobody calls I pray you're flyin' high when your engine stalls
I pray all your dreams never come true Just know wherever you are, honey, I pray for you
When you have been wronged how quick are you to do as Paul says?
1 Corinthians 4:12–13 ESV
12 and we labor, working with our own hands. When reviled, we bless; when persecuted, we endure; 13 when slandered, we entreat. We have become, and are still, like the scum of the world, the refuse of all things.
1 Cor
If you struggle with this what is it in your heart keeping you from doing this?
How might your family, this church change if we began to practice this!?
Sympathy / Empathy
15 = Rejoice & Weep @ the right things @ the right time!!
Chrysostom - weeping easy / rejoicing hard
Contribute to the needs of the saints and seek to show hospitality.
adopt a pet comercial...
e-trade = don’t get mad… get e-trade… NO!
thou shalt not covet!
1 Corinthians 12:26 ESV
26 If one member suffers, all suffer together; if one member is honored, all rejoice together.
Hebrews 13:3 ESV
3 Remember those who are in prison, as though in prison with them, and those who are mistreated, since you also are in the body.
we are usually so self absorbed that we cannot even see this let alone act on it… I’ve got my own problems man!
When others are “weeping” what keeps you from “weeping” with them? / “Rejoicing”
Where is their pride in your heart that needs to be rooted out? = they do/don’t deserve that
With what people or situations do you most need to grow in sympathy / empathy
Harmony
16a = living in harmony with one another
Philippians 2:2 ESV
2 complete my joy by being of the same mind, having the same love, being in full accord and of one mind.
1 Peter 3:8 ESV
8 Finally, all of you, have unity of mind, sympathy, brotherly love, a tender heart, and a humble mind.
Where are you most likely to allow little disagreements to cause division?
Do you have a clear understanding of what the size of the issues are?
How might this church be different from others if we practiced this? What might we accomplish?
Humility
16b = these two phrases share same word [phronountes] = to think in such a way
haughty = a world above, tall, very valuable
lowly = person of low standing / menial labor
don’t think of yourself as better then others / don’t think of any tasks as below you!
wise in your own sight = judiciousness
Romans 12:3 ESV
3 For by the grace given to me I say to everyone among you not to think of himself more highly than he ought to think, but to think with sober judgment, each according to the measure of faith that God has assigned.
Rom 12.3
Humility by C.J. Mahaney = recommended book
Pride is at the heart of our lack of obedience to so many of these points Paul has made and will continue to make!!
“never be” = ginomai = to become = we must constantly be rooting out springs of pride in our hearts...
let me have your eyes for a moment… if you retain nothing else from this message retain this, be about the business of killing your pride!!
Mercy
17 = short quote of &
17-21 = could be all one thing
Matthew 5:39 ESV
39 But I say to you, Do not resist the one who is evil. But if anyone slaps you on the right cheek, turn to him the other also.
so counter cultural!!
give thought = figure it out ahead of time - plan on your response
honorable = good, moral, beautiful
v14 / hand & glove
do not be conformed to societal norms - darkened hearts of men
be transformed by the renewing of your mind by the word of God
purposing yourself to live out Christ-like-ness beforehand!!
if you fail to plan you plan to fail!
Where in your life do you most struggle with giving mercy to others?
When you do struggle with this what do you feel your heart wanting?
How would living this out represent the gospel to those around you?
Peaceable
18 = Reality of a fallen world!
if possible = sometimes it will not be possible!
dependent on you = we can only control our selves!
2 Timothy 4:14–15 ESV
14 Alexander the coppersmith did me great harm; the Lord will repay him according to his deeds. 15 Beware of him yourself, for he strongly opposed our message.
you WILL answer for you!
Would you be able to say in all honesty that you are a man or woman of peace?
When it depends on you are you bearing peace, seeking peace, receptive to peace?
Overcoming
Romans 12:19–21 ESV
19 Beloved, never avenge yourselves, but leave it to the wrath of God, for it is written, “Vengeance is mine, I will repay, says the Lord.” 20 To the contrary, “if your enemy is hungry, feed him; if he is thirsty, give him something to drink; for by so doing you will heap burning coals on his head.” 21 Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good.
