Christ wants a church that is committed to His Word and not compromised with the world.

Christ’s Character

He who has the sharp two-edged sword.
His Word is supreme. When we compromise, we are compromising the Word.

Commendation

They held Christ’s name in the midst of a corrupt culture.
Pergamus was the seat of many gods in the Roman Pantheon. The altar to Zeus Sotor was there and looked like a throne.
Some held to the name of Christ even to the point of death.

Correction

The doctrine of Balaam - getting the people of God to compromise with the world.
There are some people who will not be satisfied unless they can pull a Christian down into their sin. They think it will ease their own conscience.
This church was guilty of compromising on meat offered to idols ( and ).
This church was guilty of compromising by excusing immoral practises in their midst.
The doctrine of the Nicolaitans. - a forerunner of Gnosticism. Separating the physical from the spiritual and excusing what was done the physical. Denial of Christ’s full humanity (saying that his spirit just came on a body and then left it at the crucifixion.)

A severe warning - Christ will fight against them.

Call

Hold to the Word - Christ Sustains.
The hidden manna was given as daily sustenance from God to the people in the wilderness. Christ said that he was the bread sent down from heaven. He will sustain you during trial and tribulation!
Hold to the Word - Christ Sanctifies by the Spirit.
The white stone was a symbol of acquittal or release given to those who had been accused before a court of law. It also symbolized entrance into a closed meeting.
Christ has justified us with his blood. We are now being sanctified by the Spirit. He secures our entrance.
Hold to the Word - Christ Secures.
The secret name is intended for those He knows!
