Introduction

Exodus 33:7–11 NASB95
Now Moses used to take the tent and pitch it outside the camp, a good distance from the camp, and he called it the tent of meeting. And everyone who sought the Lord would go out to the tent of meeting which was outside the camp. And it came about, whenever Moses went out to the tent, that all the people would arise and stand, each at the entrance of his tent, and gaze after Moses until he entered the tent. Whenever Moses entered the tent, the pillar of cloud would descend and stand at the entrance of the tent; and the Lord would speak with Moses. When all the people saw the pillar of cloud standing at the entrance of the tent, all the people would arise and worship, each at the entrance of his tent. Thus the Lord used to speak to Moses face to face, just as a man speaks to his friend. When Moses returned to the camp, his servant Joshua, the son of Nun, a young man, would not depart from the tent.
What does this model remind you of?

The Tabernacle

The tabernacle was 45 feet long and 15 feet wide.
Two compartments: Holy Place and The Holy of Holies or the Most Holy Place.
Holy Place:
Right wall - Table of Showbread
Left wall - Lampstand
Directly in front of you just past the Table and Lampstand was the Alter of Incense and then the veil
On the other side of the veil was the Most Holy Place
Ark of the Covenant
Tablets; Aaron’s Rod; Golden Pot with Manna
The Tabernacle was in use for over 400 years.

Solomon’s Temple

Took sevens years to complete and was done around 960BC.
It was built over the protruding rock on Mt. Moriah in the area where Abraham offered up Isaac.
Because of the similarities between the temple and the Garden of Eden, many believe the garden was the prototype for the tabernacle.
You had an East to West progression in the garden of Eden according to Jewish tradition with the two trees on the top of the hill.
When Adam and Eve were expelled, they were expelled to the east, where two Cherubim and a flaming sword guarded the entrance.
Now, when the priest wanted to approach God in the Holy of Holies, he would have to pass through the flaming sword and the cherubim to enter God’s presence, the same way man was cast out.
The Temple was about 90ft long 30ft wide and 45ft high.
2 Chronicles 7:19–20 NASB95
“But if you turn away and forsake My statutes and My commandments which I have set before you, and go and serve other gods and worship them, then I will uproot you from My land which I have given you, and this house which I have consecrated for My name I will cast out of My sight and I will make it a proverb and a byword among all peoples.
2 Chronicles 36:16 NASB95
but they continually mocked the messengers of God, despised His words and scoffed at His prophets, until the wrath of the Lord arose against His people, until there was no remedy.
2 Chronicles 36:19 NASB95
Then they burned the house of God and broke down the wall of Jerusalem, and burned all its fortified buildings with fire and destroyed all its valuable articles.
2 Chronicles 36:23 NASB95
“Thus says Cyrus king of Persia, ‘The Lord, the God of heaven, has given me all the kingdoms of the earth, and He has appointed me to build Him a house in Jerusalem, which is in Judah. Whoever there is among you of all His people, may the Lord his God be with him, and let him go up!’ ”

Herod’s Temple

150ft high, 585ft east to west and 610ft north to south.

מִשְׁכָּן

It means a dwelling place. In this context it would mean the place where God dwells. So the tabernacle represents the dwelling place or presence of God.

God Provides the Resources for the Tabernacle

Exodus 36:2–7 NASB95
Then Moses called Bezalel and Oholiab and every skillful person in whom the Lord had put skill, everyone whose heart stirred him, to come to the work to perform it. They received from Moses all the contributions which the sons of Israel had brought to perform the work in the construction of the sanctuary. And they still continued bringing to him freewill offerings every morning. And all the skillful men who were performing all the work of the sanctuary came, each from the work which he was performing, and they said to Moses, “The people are bringing much more than enough for the construction work which the Lord commanded us to perform.” So Moses issued a command, and a proclamation was circulated throughout the camp, saying, “Let no man or woman any longer perform work for the contributions of the sanctuary.” Thus the people were restrained from bringing any more. For the material they had was sufficient and more than enough for all the work, to perform it.
What do you see in this text?
We see that the covenant people of God rise to God’s call to serve. They went above and beyond.
Where else do we see God’s people willing to answer God’s call?
Genesis 12:1 NASB95
Now the Lord said to Abram, “Go forth from your country, And from your relatives And from your father’s house, To the land which I will show you;
What about God’s request that Abraham give up his only son?
The Old Testament Tabernacle is a Type of God’s Abiding Presence
Have you made room for God in your life?
If that is what you have done, then you do not know him.
Matthew 16:24–25 NASB95
Then Jesus said to His disciples, “If anyone wishes to come after Me, he must deny himself, and take up his cross and follow Me. “For whoever wishes to save his life will lose it; but whoever loses his life for My sake will find it.
Matthew 16:18 NASB95
“I also say to you that you are Peter, and upon this rock I will build My church; and the gates of Hades will not overpower it.

God Builds the Tabernacle through Obedient People

Exodus 39:42–43 NASB95
So the sons of Israel did all the work according to all that the Lord had commanded Moses. And Moses examined all the work and behold, they had done it; just as the Lord had commanded, this they had done. So Moses blessed them.

God’s People Had a Unity of Purpose

Acts 1:14 NASB95
These all with one mind were continually devoting themselves to prayer, along with the women, and Mary the mother of Jesus, and with His brothers.
Philippians 1:27 NASB95
Only conduct yourselves in a manner worthy of the gospel of Christ, so that whether I come and see you or remain absent, I will hear of you that you are standing firm in one spirit, with one mind striving together for the faith of the gospel;
Matthew 28:19–20 NASB95
“Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age.”
Ephesians 4:11–14 NASB95
And He gave some as apostles, and some as prophets, and some as evangelists, and some as pastors and teachers, for the equipping of the saints for the work of service, to the building up of the body of Christ; until we all attain to the unity of the faith, and of the knowledge of the Son of God, to a mature man, to the measure of the stature which belongs to the fullness of Christ. As a result, we are no longer to be children, tossed here and there by waves and carried about by every wind of doctrine, by the trickery of men, by craftiness in deceitful scheming;

Disobedient People Are Removed

1 Corinthians 5:13 NASB95
But those who are outside, God judges. Remove the wicked man from among yourselves.
What keeps us from removing wicked people from the Christian community?
Matthew 18:17 NASB95
“If he refuses to listen to them, tell it to the church; and if he refuses to listen even to the church, let him be to you as a Gentile and a tax collector.
Why do you think there is so little emphasis on holiness today?
Romans 16:17 NASB95
Now I urge you, brethren, keep your eye on those who cause dissensions and hindrances contrary to the teaching which you learned, and turn away from them.
Why is it that false teachers who clearly contradict basic Christian doctrine receive such favorable treatment by the churches?

God Fills the Tabernacle with his Presence

Exodus 40:34–38 NASB95
Then the cloud covered the tent of meeting, and the glory of the Lord filled the tabernacle. Moses was not able to enter the tent of meeting because the cloud had settled on it, and the glory of the Lord filled the tabernacle. Throughout all their journeys whenever the cloud was taken up from over the tabernacle, the sons of Israel would set out; but if the cloud was not taken up, then they did not set out until the day when it was taken up. For throughout all their journeys, the cloud of the Lord was on the tabernacle by day, and there was fire in it by night, in the sight of all the house of Israel.
Acts 1:7 NASB95
He said to them, “It is not for you to know times or epochs which the Father has fixed by His own authority;
Acts 1:8 NASB95
but you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you shall be My witnesses both in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and even to the remotest part of the earth.”
Acts 2:4 NASB95
And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit was giving them utterance.
Ephesians 5:18 NASB95
And do not get drunk with wine, for that is dissipation, but be filled with the Spirit,
1 Corinthians 3:16 NASB95
Do you not know that you are a temple of God and that the Spirit of God dwells in you?
1 Corinthians 6:19–20 NASB95
Or do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit who is in you, whom you have from God, and that you are not your own? For you have been bought with a price: therefore glorify God in your body.
1 Corinthians 6:16 NASB95
Or do you not know that the one who joins himself to a prostitute is one body with her? For He says, “The two shall become one flesh.”
1 peter 1
1 Peter 1:16 NASB95
because it is written, “You shall be holy, for I am holy.”
What should the attitude of the church be toward those who do not wish to live holy lives but who still want to be part of the church?
