The Blessing of God’s Protection

Introduction
Jude has concluded the main message of his letter to churches who have been confronted with false teachers who have perverted the true gospel. Throughout the letter he has repeatedly condemned what they have been teaching as well as how they have lived their lives. He has conclusively proven that they deserve the judgment that is coming their way. Then he told his readers what they need to do to protect the true Church from such people.
Now it is time to close his letter. Just as his introduction set the stage for the false teaching accusations, so his concluding benediction solidifies the truth that authentic believers will be protected by God Himself. This well-known benediction is even more meaningful when you recognize that Jude is ascribing to God will protect believers, even while they are doing their part in being protected (). We will see this by asking this question of the final two verses: How will God provide protection from false teachers for true believers? The answer is two fold: by His ability and by His attributes.

Believers are protected by God with His ability

The beginning of verse 24 says “now to Him who is able…” Then with two verbs, Jude tells us what God is able to do.

He is able to guard you from spiritual failure

At the beginning of the letter, Jude said of his readers that they are “kept for Jesus Christ” (). That word speaks of being preserved and protected. Now in this benediction, Jude chooses another word when he says that God is able to “keep you from stumbling”. It also contains the idea of protection, but also has the idea of guarding, as a soldier stands guard at his station, keeping watch against enemy attacks. God is not going to allow His children to stumble, to fail, in staying true to the gospel.
While it is true that we have a role in keeping ourselves in the love of God (), we are not left alone in the battle. God is on our side. As Paul teaches, “If God is for us, who is against us?” (). Answer: no one and nothing. God wins. His enemies lose. And these false teachers are undoubtedly the enemy!

He is able to make you a spiritual success

Not only will is God able to keep us from falling spiritually, but just the opposite; He is able “to make you stand in the presence of His glory blameless with great joy”. No stumbling, only standing! We may have some trials in this life, some persecution in this life, but in the end, He will cause us to stand in success. There will be nothing that can be put on us for shame or blame because it has all been put on Jesus Christ at the cross. That is spiritual victory, with a total absence of spiritual defeat.

Believers are protected by God with His attributes

What is God like? The answer to that question takes into a description of God character, also called His attributes. While there are many that can be named, Jude specifies four attributes that should be remembered by Christians.

· God’s glory:

This speaks of God being recognized as important and honored.

· God’s majesty:

This speaks of His greatness in all that He has done, is doing, and will do.

· God’s dominion:

This speaks of His power. He has the strength to keep us safe and successful.

· God’s authority:

This speaks of His right to do whatever He wants to do. He wants to protect us and present us as blameless when we stand in His presence with great joy.

Conclusion

A fifth attribute is described at the end of verse 25 when Jude says “before all time and now and forever”. That covers these attributes of glory, majesty, power, and authority for the past, present, and future. This protection is not just a temporary status, but eternal because God is eternal. We sometimes think of eternal life as never-ending, but these words give us a more accurate description. Not only does it talk about eternity past and future, but even right NOW. We are covered in the “now” time with God’s protection. That’s the best life insurance program available. And the premiums were paid for by Jesus Christ! There are no exclusions in this coverage! So with Jude, we can also say this: AMEN!
