Like the apostle Paul, McGarvey spoke with plainness of speech. A child could follow his lessons and adults wondered why everybody could not speak like him. He was devoted to the Word of God and promised to defend the Bible through thick and thin, no matter how thick and no matter how thin. McGarvey maintained from first to last the theory of verbal inspiration of the scriptures. To him, Isaiah was Isaiah, Jonah was Jonah great fish and all, and Balaam’s ass spoke as good Hebrew as his master.
