Jesus was at a supper in Bethany, and Lazarus whom He had raised from the dead was there also...
John 12:9–11 NKJV
9 Now a great many of the Jews knew that He was there; and they came, not for Jesus’ sake only, but that they might also see Lazarus, whom He had raised from the dead. 10 But the chief priests plotted to put Lazarus to death also, 11 because on account of him many of the Jews went away and believed in Jesus.
Notice, they wanted to put Lazarus to death.
When God does a work in someone’s life, the devil fights against that person.
God has worked in our lives, we need to be aware of the fact that devil can’t stand it:
1 Peter 5:8 NKJV
8 Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil walks about like a roaring lion, seeking whom he may devour.
We must therefore be on guard:
Ephesians 6:10–13 NKJV
10 Finally, my brethren, be strong in the Lord and in the power of His might. 11 Put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil. 12 For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this age, against spiritual hosts of wickedness in the heavenly places. 13 Therefore take up the whole armor of God, that you may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand.
Paul then mentions the armour, using the armour a Roman soldier would wear as a metaphor.
Ephesians 6:14 NKJV
14 Stand therefore, having girded your waist with truth, having put on the breastplate of righteousness,
Gird yourself with truth
As Christians we are to be people of truth...
Ephesians 4:25 NKJV
25 Therefore, putting away lying, Let each one of you speak truth with his neighbor,” for we are members of one another.
Proverbs 11:3 NKJV
3 The integrity of the upright will guide them, But the perversity of the unfaithful will destroy them.
When we lie, we create an inroad for the devil.
Breastplate of righteousness
Ephesians 6:14 NKJV
14 Stand therefore, having girded your waist with truth, having put on the breastplate of righteousness,
Sin lets the devil in. We need to live right.
God’s instruction for righteous living can be summarised as follows:
Galatians 5:14 NKJV
14 For all the law is fulfilled in one word, even in this: “You shall love your neighbor as yourself.”
Romans 13:10 NKJV
10 Love does no harm to a neighbor; therefore love is the fulfillment of the law.
1 Thessalonians 5:8 NKJV
8 But let us who are of the day be sober, putting on the breastplate of faith and love, and as a helmet the hope of salvation.
Gospel Shoes
Back to Eph 6. So far, Paul has mentioned, the armour of truth and righteousness. He continues:
Ephesians 6:15 NKJV
15 and having shod your feet with the preparation of the gospel of peace;
In other words, everywhere we go, we are to be ready to share the gospel.
1 Peter 3:15 NKJV
15 But sanctify the Lord God in your hearts, and always be ready to give a defense to everyone who asks you a reason for the hope that is in you, with meekness and fear;
“defence” can also be translated “answer”.
We must also be read to tell people why we believe.
Always be ready to share your testimony, to share what God has done, and is doing for you.
It must be done with humility and respect (“fear”).
This verse can also be understood in a different sense. Consider how the New Century Version translates it:
Ephesians 6:15 NCV
15 On your feet wear the Good News of peace to help you stand strong.
You cannot stand strong against the enemy unless you know you are at peace with God (you need to know God is on your side!). And that’s what the gospel gives us, peace with God:
Romans 5:1 NKJV
1 Therefore, having been justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ,
When we know this, we can stand strong against the enemy.
Shield of Faith
Back to Eph 6. So far, Paul has mentioned the armour of truth, righteousness, and the gospel...
Ephesians 6:16 NKJV
16 above all, taking the shield of faith with which you will be able to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked one.
Flaming arrows were used in warfare, but the Roman soldiers shield was fireproof.
When we hold on to what we believe, Satan's lies, deceptions, distractions, and temptations will be extinguished. In other words, they will not penetrate and take root in our lives.
You see, faith is knowing that you know that you know something is true. We are to hold on to what we know from the word of God.
For example,
Romans 8:28 NIV
28 And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose.
When we hold on to that belief, that God is working out His good plan for us, no matter what we are going through, the enemy’s fire darts of discouragement will be extinguished.
Back to Eph 6.
Helmet of salvation
Ephesians 6:17 NKJV
17 And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God;
We have been saved. We are being saved. We will be saved.
We have been saved i.e. we have been forgiven and raised with Jesus:
Ephesians 2:5–6 NKJV
5 even when we were dead in trespasses, made us alive together with Christ (by grace you have been saved), 6 and raised us up together, and made us sit together in the heavenly places in Christ Jesus,
When we know we are raised with Jesus and sitting in heavenly places, the devil won’t be able to mess with us. Notice “heavenly places”:
Ephesians 1:20–21 NKJV
20 which He worked in Christ when He raised Him from the dead and seated Him at His right hand in the heavenly places, 21 far above all principality and power and might and dominion, and every name that is named, not only in this age but also in that which is to come.
We are seated “far above” the devil. In spiritual warfare we must know this, we must put this truth on as our helmet.
We are being saved i.e. God is transforming us day by day, making us more like Jesus:
Romans 12:2 NKJV
2 And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God.
Notice we are transformed by the renewing of our mind. The helmet protects the head. We need to guard our minds from the thoughts that the devil wants us to think!
We will be saved i.e. our bodies will be transformed and made just like Jesus’
Philippians 3:20–21 NKJV
20 For our citizenship is in heaven, from which we also eagerly wait for the Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ, 21 who will transform our lowly body that it may be conformed to His glorious body, according to the working by which He is able even to subdue all things to Himself.
1 Thessalonians 5:8 NKJV
8 But let us who are of the day be sober, putting on the breastplate of faith and love, and as a helmet the hope of salvation.
Notice the helmet is “the hope of salvation” i.e. the salvation we are looking forward to.
Staying focused on the glories that await the faithful will help us to resist the temptations the devil sends our way.
Back to our passage in Eph 6.
Sword of the Spirit
Ephesians 6:17 NKJV
17 And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God;
The sword of the Spirit refers to speaking the word of God against the devil.
When the devil tempted Jesus to turn the stones into bread:
Matthew 4:4 NKJV
4 But He answered and said, “It is written, ‘Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceeds from the mouth of God.’ ”
When the devil tempted Jesus to show by jumping down from the pinnacle of the temple:
Matthew 4:7 NKJV
7 Jesus said to him, “It is written again, ‘You shall not tempt the Lord your God.’ ”
When the devil tempted Jesus by offering Him all the kingdoms of the world if He would fall down and worship him:
Matthew 4:10 NKJV
10 Then Jesus said to him, “Away with you, Satan! For it is written, ‘You shall worship the Lord your God, and Him only you shall serve.’ ”
Notice what Jesus said each time: “it is written” x 3
When the devil tells you are guilty:
2 Corinthians 5:21 NKJV
21 For He made Him who knew no sin to be sin for us, that we might become the righteousness of God in Him.
“I am the righteousness of God in Christ”
When the devil tells you can't do it:
Philippians 4:13 NKJV
13 I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.
When the devil tells you won't make it
2 Corinthians 2:14 NKJV
14 Now thanks be to God who always leads us in triumph in Christ, and through us diffuses the fragrance of His knowledge in every place.
“God always causes me to triumph”
When the devil knocks your self-confidence, tell him:
“I am fearfully and wonderfully made”
(Psalm 139:14 NKJV)
When we speak in this way, our words have the power of the Spirit backing them, that’s why its called the “sword of the Spirit”, and it will put the devil to flight!
James 4:7 NKJV
7 Therefore submit to God. Resist the devil and he will flee from you.
Why does he flee? Because the sword is sharp!
or the finally weapon...
All that we have mentioned today must be done within the context of a lifestyle of prayer...
Back to Eph 6...
Ephesians 6:18 NKJV
18 praying always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit, being watchful to this end with all perseverance and supplication for all the saints—
Notice, “praying always”. The armour of God is to be worn by those who are praying always.
Not just any kind of praying, but Spirit-anointed prayer. It is prayer “in the Spirit”. We need to be full of the Spirit as we pray.
Notice we need pray for each other “for all the saints”.
Are you praying for the members of this church?
Make sure you make it your daily habit to spend time in prayer. Make sure you cover your family. Make sure you cover the church also.
A lifestyle of prayer overthrows the plans of the enemy!
