Sacrifice is a part of the relationship with God (Gen 8:20-22)

God responds to sacrifice.
Noah was not saved because of sacrifice.
The relationship was restored through sacrifice.
As it should be, much has been sacrificed for us (Heb. 10:12)

Relationship with God means we value what God values. (Genesis 9:1-6)

“Be fruitful & multiply” – God desired to accomplish His work through us.
We value the human race in general, understanding our place in God’s plan.
Having the power to take away life, we must understand the value of it.
New relationship with animals
Original relationship with animal was harmony
We still have dominion, but in a broken relationship
Deeper understanding of the value of human life.
“I will require a reckoning”
settlement

A relationship with God involves a both a fear of His wrath and faith in His promise of grace.

Behind God’s promise in Gen 9:8-11
Genesis 9:8–11 ESV
Then God said to Noah and to his sons with him, “Behold, I establish my covenant with you and your offspring after you, and with every living creature that is with you, the birds, the livestock, and every beast of the earth with you, as many as came out of the ark; it is for every beast of the earth. I establish my covenant with you, that never again shall all flesh be cut off by the waters of the flood, and never again shall there be a flood to destroy the earth.”
God is fully capable of destroying all creation.
But he promises not to.
That means our salvation is not based on our good works (how good are we really) but on God’s grace.
We should remember our the object of our faith when we look at His symbols of His promise promises.
Gen 9:12-13 – This is the sign of the covenant (bow)
Gen 9:14 -15 : “When I bring clouds I will remember
Genesis 9:14–15 ESV
When I bring clouds over the earth and the bow is seen in the clouds, I will remember my covenant that is between me and you and every living creature of all flesh. And the waters shall never again become a flood to destroy all flesh.
The potential for righteous judgment is there.
But God promise of grace is always there also.
We should see it and me reminded of both.
We have a symbol of a great promise today
The cross represents God righteous judgment
A penalty owed by all mankind taken by one man
The cross also represents God’s sacrificial love
