The Cross

Through His death on the cross, God’s Son was dealing with every persons sin, suffering, and sorrow
It is by receiving personally the finished work of Christ that all of our needs are met!
Through the cross God reveled His love
Romans 5:8 NKJV
But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.
Demonstrate - a legal term - to provide evidence; stand as proof; Shown by ones behavior or attitude
Hebrews 2:10 NKJV
For it was fitting for Him, for whom are all things and by whom are all things, in bringing many sons to glory, to make the captain of their salvation perfect through sufferings.
Look at the charge against Him:
Mark 2:16 NKJV
And when the scribes and Pharisees saw Him eating with the tax collectors and sinners, they said to His disciples, “How is it that He eats and drinks with tax collectors and sinners?”
Luke 7:34 NKJV
The Son of Man has come eating and drinking, and you say, ‘Look, a glutton and a winebibber, a friend of tax collectors and sinners!’
Harmatia - to miss the mark - denotes an intellectual inferiority and failure by reason of deficient education
Man was missing the mark because he did not know what the mark was!
Stoics - “one who is not clear as to the importance or bearing of his action
The book of Proverbs talks about the Wise, the Naive, and the fool
a person who has been tricked or deceived into appearing or acting silly or stupid: to make a fool of someone.
I was the fool! I had been tricked
But when I came to understand who Jesus was everything changed!
An important part of Jesus ministry was to reveal the Father to us
John 14:7–11 NKJV
“If you had known Me, you would have known My Father also; and from now on you know Him and have seen Him.” Philip said to Him, “Lord, show us the Father, and it is sufficient for us.” Jesus said to him, “Have I been with you so long, and yet you have not known Me, Philip? He who has seen Me has seen the Father; so how can you say, ‘Show us the Father’? Do you not believe that I am in the Father, and the Father in Me? The words that I speak to you I do not speak on My own authority; but the Father who dwells in Me does the works. Believe Me that I am in the Father and the Father in Me, or else believe Me for the sake of the works themselves.
God’s love was revealed by the suffering of Christ on our behalf
1 John 4:9–10 NKJV
In this the love of God was manifested toward us, that God has sent His only begotten Son into the world, that we might live through Him. In this is love, not that we loved God, but that He loved us and sent His Son to be the propitiation for our sins.
Jesus took our punishment so we could be free
Isaiah 53:5–6 NKJV
But He was wounded for our transgressions, He was bruised for our iniquities; The chastisement for our peace was upon Him, And by His stripes we are healed. All we like sheep have gone astray; We have turned, every one, to his own way; And the Lord has laid on Him the iniquity of us all.
What was the result of this act of selflessness?
Through the cross we now have a renewed relationship with God
2 Corinthians 5:21 NKJV
For He made Him who knew no sin to be sin for us, that we might become the righteousness of God in Him.
Through the cross we receive forgiveness
1 John 2:1–2 NKJV
My little children, these things I write to you, so that you may not sin. And if anyone sins, we have an Advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous. And He Himself is the propitiation for our sins, and not for ours only but also for the whole world.
Through the cross we receive freedom:
From past sin
Colossians 1:13 NKJV
He has delivered us from the power of darkness and conveyed us into the kingdom of the Son of His love,
From present judgemant
Hebrews 9:26–27 NKJV
He then would have had to suffer often since the foundation of the world; but now, once at the end of the ages, He has appeared to put away sin by the sacrifice of Himself. And as it is appointed for men to die once, but after this the judgment,
Freedom from death
John 3:16 NKJV
For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life.
You see the enemy hates the message of the cross because it screams loudly of the love of God!
Paul wroteL
Romans 1:16 NKJV
For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ, for it is the power of God to salvation for everyone who believes, for the Jew first and also for the Greek.
I want to tell you today that love and justice met at the cross
Heaven and hell collided in a colossal battle for the souls of men and now WE WIN!!!!!
Romans 5:8–11 NKJV
But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us. Much more then, having now been justified by His blood, we shall be saved from wrath through Him. For if when we were enemies we were reconciled to God through the death of His Son, much more, having been reconciled, we shall be saved by His life. And not only that, but we also rejoice in God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom we have now received the reconciliation.
