Acts 1:1–5 ESV
In the first book, O Theophilus, I have dealt with all that Jesus began to do and teach, until the day when he was taken up, after he had given commands through the Holy Spirit to the apostles whom he had chosen. He presented himself alive to them after his suffering by many proofs, appearing to them during forty days and speaking about the kingdom of God. And while staying with them he ordered them not to depart from Jerusalem, but to wait for the promise of the Father, which, he said, “you heard from me; for John baptized with water, but you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit not many days from now.”
The Series: The Dispensation Of The Holy Spirit
Dispensation - grk. oikonomia
the act of administration; stewardship; management
(Dictionary) giving out, handing out; distribution, allocation,
The “dispensation of the Holy Spirit” is that time in the plan of God when the Holy Spirit of God is poured out to earth and received by those who believe.
Issue at hand
The greatest gift that God has ever given to man is His Spirit, and still not very many Christian understands, much less appreciate and enjoy, the presence and working of the Holy Spirit in us.
My Objective in this series:
explore the vastness of the promised Holy Spirit and understand its working
discover how the Holy Spirit is working in the last days at the close of the Dispensation
Part 1: The Promise of the Father
Promise - grk. epangelia
that which one persons commits either to do or not to do in the future
The Holy Spirit was promised as far back as the Old Testament times.

The Holy Spirit as a Promise

Toward the end of the Old Testament era, talk about the Holy Spirit was spreading around.
John talked about the coming Holy Spirit.
Matthew 3:11 ESV
“I baptize you with water for repentance, but he who is coming after me is mightier than I, whose sandals I am not worthy to carry. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire.
Matthew 1:11 ESV
and Josiah the father of Jechoniah and his brothers, at the time of the deportation to Babylon.
Jesus talked about the Holy Spirit.
the heavenly Father will give the Holy Spirit to those who ask it.
Luke 11:11–13 ESV
What father among you, if his son asks for a fish, will instead of a fish give him a serpent; or if he asks for an egg, will give him a scorpion? If you then, who are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will the heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to those who ask him!”
Luke 11:13 ESV
If you then, who are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will the heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to those who ask him!”
Luke 11.11-13
Matthew 43
when Holy Spirit finally comes, blasphemy against it will be not be forgiven
Matthew 12:32 ESV
And whoever speaks a word against the Son of Man will be forgiven, but whoever speaks against the Holy Spirit will not be forgiven, either in this age or in the age to come.
The Holy Spirit is a gift that God is ready to “give away”!
Matthew 12:30–32 ESV
Whoever is not with me is against me, and whoever does not gather with me scatters. Therefore I tell you, every sin and blasphemy will be forgiven people, but the blasphemy against the Spirit will not be forgiven. And whoever speaks a word against the Son of Man will be forgiven, but whoever speaks against the Holy Spirit will not be forgiven, either in this age or in the age to come.
John 4:10 ESV
Jesus answered her, “If you knew the gift of God, and who it is that is saying to you, ‘Give me a drink,’ you would have asked him, and he would have given you living water.”
Matthew 12.30-32
John 4:9–10 ESV
The Samaritan woman said to him, “How is it that you, a Jew, ask for a drink from me, a woman of Samaria?” (For Jews have no dealings with Samaritans.) Jesus answered her, “If you knew the gift of God, and who it is that is saying to you, ‘Give me a drink,’ you would have asked him, and he would have given you living water.”
John 4.
John 7:37–39 ESV
On the last day of the feast, the great day, Jesus stood up and cried out, “If anyone thirsts, let him come to me and drink. Whoever believes in me, as the Scripture has said, ‘Out of his heart will flow rivers of living water.’ ” Now this he said about the Spirit, whom those who believed in him were to receive, for as yet the Spirit had not been given, because Jesus was not yet glorified.
John 7.
Jesus will send the Promise
Luke 24:49 ESV
And behold, I am sending the promise of my Father upon you. But stay in the city until you are clothed with power from on high.”

How the Holy Spirit was Promised

How did the prophets spoke of the coming of the Holy Spirit?
Notice:
Prophecies concerning the coming of the Holy Spirit came at times of Israel’s spiritual bankruptcy and backsliding.
- the earliest promise of the outpouring of the Spirit of God
Isaiah 32:15 ESV
until the Spirit is poured upon us from on high, and the wilderness becomes a fruitful field, and the fruitful field is deemed a forest.

God promised the Holy Spirit like water on dry ground.

- God was weary of Israel’s sins
Isaiah 44:1–4 ESV
“But now hear, O Jacob my servant, Israel whom I have chosen! Thus says the Lord who made you, who formed you from the womb and will help you: Fear not, O Jacob my servant, Jeshurun whom I have chosen. For I will pour water on the thirsty land, and streams on the dry ground; I will pour my Spirit upon your offspring, and my blessing on your descendants. They shall spring up among the grass like willows by flowing streams.
Isaiah 44.5
Isaiah 44:3–5 ESV
For I will pour water on the thirsty land, and streams on the dry ground; I will pour my Spirit upon your offspring, and my blessing on your descendants. They shall spring up among the grass like willows by flowing streams. This one will say, ‘I am the Lord’s,’ another will call on the name of Jacob, and another will write on his hand, ‘The Lord’s,’ and name himself by the name of Israel.”
Isaiah 44.1-4
When the Holy Spirit comes:
Israel’s children will be refreshed
God’s blessing will return to Israel
there will be rejoicing in knowing that “we are the Lord’s”!

God promised to place His Spirit within under the New Covenant.

Ezekiel 36:27 ESV
And I will put my Spirit within you, and cause you to walk in my statutes and be careful to obey my rules.
Ezekiel 37:14 ESV
And I will put my Spirit within you, and you shall live, and I will place you in your own land. Then you shall know that I am the Lord; I have spoken, and I will do it, declares the Lord.”
Ezekiel 36:14 ESV
therefore you shall no longer devour people and no longer bereave your nation of children, declares the Lord God.
When the Holy Spirit comes…
God’s people will then be able to walk in His statutes, and be able to carefully observe His ordinances
God’s people will “live” and be placed in their “own land”
Ezekiel 39:29 ESV
And I will not hide my face anymore from them, when I pour out my Spirit upon the house of Israel, declares the Lord God.”
Ezekiel 39.29
When the Holy Spirit comes...
God’s “face” will no longer be hidden from His people!
Face - Heb. paneh, the who person, presence

God promised the Spirit of prophecy!

Joel 2:28–29 ESV
“And it shall come to pass afterward, that I will pour out my Spirit on all flesh; your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, your old men shall dream dreams, and your young men shall see visions. Even on the male and female servants in those days I will pour out my Spirit.
Joel 2:29–30 ESV
Even on the male and female servants in those days I will pour out my Spirit. “And I will show wonders in the heavens and on the earth, blood and fire and columns of smoke.
Joel 2.28-29
When the Holy Spirit comes...
God will reveal many hidden things, as well as “things to come”
- he will declare (show) to you things to come.
Everyone will be partakers - sons and daughters, old and young, even servants!

God promised the Spirit of grace and supplication!

Zechariah 12:10 ESV
“And I will pour out on the house of David and the inhabitants of Jerusalem a spirit of grace and pleas for mercy, so that, when they look on me, on him whom they have pierced, they shall mourn for him, as one mourns for an only child, and weep bitterly over him, as one weeps over a firstborn.
When the Holy Spirit comes...
grace will overflow - Israel will finally recognize their Messiah
supplication will overflow - they mourn because they are the very people who crucified the Lord!

The Promise is Here Today!

The Promise has been poured out since Pentecost!
The Promise has been poured out since Pentecost!
The Promise remains AVAILABLE to everyone!
Acts 2:38–39 ESV
And Peter said to them, “Repent and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins, and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. For the promise is for you and for your children and for all who are far off, everyone whom the Lord our God calls to himself.”
Acts 2.38

Conclusion

THE HOLY SPIRIT IS THE VERY REASON THERE IS NEW BIRTH, AND A CHRISTIAN LIFE!
The Holy Spirit is NOT a decoration in the Christian’s life.
Let’s not delegate the Spirit of God to a secondary object in our life.
The Holy Spirit is a LIVING PRESENCE - THE VERY PRESENCE OF GOD!
LET US RESTORE THE WONDER, THE BEAUTY, AND THE EXCITEMENT, OF HAVING THE SPIRIT OF GOD!
LET’S BRING HIM TO THE FOREFRONT OF OUR LIFE ONCE MORE!
LET’S RECOGNIZE HIS PRESENCE ONCE AGAIN!
