Joseph is sold to Potiphar
Picking up from the end of chapter 37
Now the Midianites had sold him in Egypt to Potiphar, an officer of Pharaoh and captain of the guard.
Genesis 37:
Joseph was taken down to Egypt
It was not by his choice
It was a result of his brother’s hate
Potiphar an officer in the Egyptian army
Midianites and Ishmaelites the same
Potiphar commanded Pharaoh’s bodyguard
The LORD was with Joseph producing success in his circucmstances
A visible testimony
His master saw the Lord was with him
His master saw that the LORD was responsible for Joseph being successful in all his activities
This testimony led to Potiphar treating Joseph with favor as Joseph continued to serve him (Faithfulness of Joseph)
This testimony lead to Joseph receiving more responsibility and authority
Abrahamic covenant a
I will bless those who bless you,
And I will curse him who curses you;
And in you all the families of the earth shall be blessed.”
Joesph’s promotion lead to Potiphar being blessed

Potiphar’s wife attempts to seduce Joseph
Sin is always looking for an opportunity “Cast longing eyes”
Sin entices our flesh “Lie with me”
To keep you from the evil woman,
From the flattering tongue of a seductress.
Do not lust after her beauty in your heart,
Nor let her allure you with her eyelids.

With her enticing speech she caused him to yield,
With her flattering lips she seduced him.

Joseph’s refusal
His faithfulness gave him his masters complete trust
His faithfulness rewarded him with a high position but also came with restrictions
Potiphar gave him access to all his property but withheld his wife (she was not his property) from him

Temptation can attack and appeal to us to sin every day
Sin will look for the perfect opportunity
It will catch us going about our daily duties
It will become even more aggressive when we resist

Joseph’s refusal to sin and right decision to flee was rewarded a false accusation
Sin resisted will seek to retaliate
Joseph’s rejection brought hurt and anger to her and the desire to get even
She was deceptively wise in her made-up story
She implied Potiphar was partially to blame
She used cultural and ethnic prejudices
She said he was mocking her
Potiphar’s anger lead to a hasty and unwise response
His wife’s well devised story
His servants anger
His intelligence and manhood was being questioned
James 1:19
So then, my beloved brethren, let every man be swift to hear, slow to speak, slow to wrath; for the wrath of man does not produce the righteousness of God.
The king’s prison was the perfect place to fulfill God’s dream he gave to Joseph
Joesph’s circumstances did not stop God’s blessing him
He still enjoyed the LORD’s presence
He received the LORD’s mercy though Potiphar gave him none
He continued to enjoy the favor of those he now would serve
