Expository Outlines on Hebrews 8. The Steadfast Christian (Hebrews 6:1–20)

The Steadfast Christian

Introduction: in these last days we need to learn to become steady in our walk with Christ, to keep moving forward. Not taking 2 steps forward then 1 two steps back...
Expository Outlines on Hebrews 8. The Steadfast Christian (Hebrews 6:1–20)

Christians need to be steadfast in the Lord. Many accept Christ, but many backslide. Many never mature or grow in the Lord. They live by their moods, becoming “roller coaster” Christians. Their feelings control them. They permit small things to discourage them. They are not willing to pay the price of being a Christian. Because they are not steadfast they give up being a Christian very easily

I. Warning to be Serious (vv. 1–8)
A. Childish (vv. 1, 2). “Let us go on to perfection.” Note the words of Jesus in:
(ESV) 19 And he said to them, “Follow me, and I will make you fishers of men.”
(ESV)
(ESV) 13 No servant can serve two masters, for either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and money.”
B. Consecration (v. 3). Let’s go on to deeper things. Let’s grow and mature in the Lord.
Therefore let us leave the elementary doctrine of Christ and go on to maturity, not laying again a foundation of repentance from dead works and of faith toward God, 2 and of instruction about washings, the laying on of hands, the resurrection of the dead, and eternal judgment. 3 And this we will do if God permits. 4 For it is impossible, in the case of those who have once been enlightened, who have tasted the heavenly gift, and have shared in the Holy Spirit, 5 and have tasted the goodness of the word of God and the powers of the age to come, 6 and then have fallen away, to restore them again to repentance, since they are crucifying once again the Son of God to their own harm and holding him up to contempt. 7 For land that has drunk the rain that often falls on it, and produces a crop useful to those for whose sake it is cultivated, receives a blessing from God. 8 But if it bears thorns and thistles, it is worthless and near to being cursed, and its end is to be burned.
C. Careless (vv. 4–6). Note the experiences of Christians:
(ESV) 4 For it is impossible, in the case of those who have once been enlightened, who have tasted the heavenly gift, and have shared in the Holy Spirit, 5 and have tasted the goodness of the word of God and the powers of the age to come, 6 and then have fallen away, to restore them again to repentance, since they are crucifying once again the Son of God to their own harm and holding him up to contempt.
A. the childish things VER. 1-2
1) Knew the truth.
2) Partakers of the Holy Ghost.
3) Tasted the good Word of God.
notice what Jesus said:
4) Had the hope of heaven.
(ESV)
19 And he said to them, “Follow me, and I will make you fishers of men.”
D. Compensation (vv. 7, 8). If Christians don’t produce fruit they are of no value (cf. ).
(ESV)
(ESV) 15 “I am the true vine, and my Father is the vinedresser. 2 Every branch in me that does not bear fruit he takes away, and every branch that does bear fruit he prunes, that it may bear more fruit. 3 Already you are clean because of the word that I have spoken to you. 4 Abide in me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit by itself, unless it abides in the vine, neither can you, unless you abide in me. 5 I am the vine; you are the branches. Whoever abides in me and I in him, he it is that bears much fruit, for apart from me you can do nothing. 6 If anyone does not abide in me he is thrown away like a branch and withers; and the branches are gathered, thrown into the fire, and burned.
II. Warning to be Steadfast (vv. 9–12)
A. Persuasion (v. 9). These people would be dedicated to the Lord.
(ESV) Though we speak in this way, yet in your case, beloved, we feel sure of better things—things that belong to salvation.
13 No servant can serve two masters, for either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and money.”
B. Promise (v. 10).
What we sow we will reap ().
(ESV) 7 Do not be deceived: God is not mocked, for whatever one sows, that will he also reap. 8 For the one who sows to his own flesh will from the flesh reap corruption, but the one who sows to the Spirit will from the Spirit reap eternal life. 9 And let us not grow weary of doing good, for in due season we will reap, if we do not give up.
2. God remembers our work().
(ESV) 16 Then those who feared the Lord spoke with one another. The Lord paid attention and heard them, and a book of remembrance was written before him of those who feared the Lord and esteemed his name.
C. Prayer (vv. 11, 12).
1) Diligence (v. 11). “We want each one of you to keep on working to the end. Then what you hope for, will happen” (NLT).
B. Consecration (v. 3) Let’s go on to deeper things. Let’s grow and mature in the Lord.
2) Dedication (v. 12). Don’t give up. Don’t quit. Be faithful (; ).
Let’s go on to deeper things. Let’s grow and mature in the Lord.
(ESV) 10 Do not fear what you are about to suffer. Behold, the devil is about to throw some of you into prison, that you may be tested, and for ten days you will have tribulation. Be faithful unto death, and I will give you the crown of life.
C. Careless (vv. 4–6). Note the experiences of Christians:

II. Warning to be Stable (vv. 13–20)
A. Promise (vv. 13, 14). God’s promise to Abraham was fulfilled. God always keep His promises (see ).
B. Patience (v. 15). Abraham wanted a son. God does answer our prayers, but in His way and in His time. Be patient. Note the words of : “He prayed again.”
C. Personal (v. 16). God backs up His promises with His name. His name is above all names.

D. Compensation (vv. 7, 8). If Christians don’t produce fruit they are of no value (cf. John 15:1–6).

D. Power (vv. 17, 18). Note two things:
He keeps His promise, and He cannot lie. Note , “The Word was made flesh … full of grace and truth.”
Note these verses: “For we are made partakers of Christ, if we hold the beginning of our confidence stedfast unto the end” (). “… If we hold fast the confidence and the rejoicing of the hope firm unto the end” (). We are also told we must overcome ().
