Be Joyful v16 In All Times

We need super human strength.
Be Joyful at All Times is impossible without the Holy Spirit.
Joy is appropriate at all times. - Even in difficult times.
The expression of joy is not appropriate at all times. - Funeral or Formal Gathering
2 Corinthians 6:10 ESV
10 as sorrowful, yet always rejoicing; as poor, yet making many rich; as having nothing, yet possessing everything.
Matthew 5:10–12 ESV
10 “Blessed are those who are persecuted for righteousness’ sake, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. 11 “Blessed are you when others revile you and persecute you and utter all kinds of evil against you falsely on my account. 12 Rejoice and be glad, for your reward is great in heaven, for so they persecuted the prophets who were before you.
Jesus saw joy in the cross.
Hebrews 12:2 ESV
2 looking to Jesus, the founder and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is seated at the right hand of the throne of God.

Be Prayerful v17 In All Things

We need super human strength.
Be Prayerful at All Times is impossible without the Holy Spirit.
You are to pray frequently .
Prayer is proper at all times, in all places, about all things.
Jesus prayed in a garden at night just before the cross.
“Constantly and fervently must we pray, because through this means God promises us immense blessings.” - Hugh of St. Victor
James 4:2 ESV
2 You desire and do not have, so you murder. You covet and cannot obtain, so you fight and quarrel. You do not have, because you do not ask.

Be Thankful v18 In All Situations

We need super human strength.
Be Thankful at All Times is impossible without the Holy Spirit.
Jesus gave thanks before the cross.
Luke 22:19 ESV
19 And he took bread, and when he had given thanks, he broke it and gave it to them, saying, “This is my body, which is given for you. Do this in remembrance of me.”

This is the will of God.

The ancient Greeks & Romans believed divination had to be used to know the will of the gods.
He has revealed the mystery of his will in the person of Jesus and the scriptures.
The will of God is your sanctification. 1 Thess 4:13
The will of God is to be joyful, prayerful, thankful. 1 Thess 5:16-18
The will of God is for you to do good. 1 Peter 2:15

Be Careful v19-22 In All of Life

We need super human strength.
Be Careful at All Times is impossible without the Holy Spirit.

The Do not’s. v19-20

Don’t quench the Spirit. v19

The Spirit is often symbolized by fire, so to quench it means to stop it or prohibit it.
Matthew 3:11, Acts 2:3, 2 Tim 1:6

Don’t despise prophecy. v20

Prophecy is spoken revelation from God.
Prophecy involves the telling of truth past, present, or future.
It is likely the Corinthian church erred on the use of spiritual gifts and the Thessalonian church erred on prohibiting spiritual gifts.

The Do’s. v21-22

Do test everything. v21a

1. It must be for the common good.

1 Corinthians 12:7 ESV
7 To each is given the manifestation of the Spirit for the common good.

2. It must build up the church.

1 Corinthians 14:3 ESV
3 On the other hand, the one who prophesies speaks to people for their upbuilding and encouragement and consolation.

3. It must agree with the apostles teaching.

1 John 4:1 ESV
1 Beloved, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits to see whether they are from God, for many false prophets have gone out into the world.
1 John 4:5–6 ESV
5 They are from the world; therefore they speak from the world, and the world listens to them. 6 We are from God. Whoever knows God listens to us; whoever is not from God does not listen to us. By this we know the Spirit of truth and the spirit of error.

Do hold fast to good. v21b

What is good?
Psalm 106:1 ESV
1 Praise the Lord! Oh give thanks to the Lord, for he is good, for his steadfast love endures forever!
Psalm 119:68 ESV
68 You are good and do good; teach me your statutes.

Do avoid every form of evil. v22

John 14:17 ESV
17 even the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it neither sees him nor knows him. You know him, for he dwells with you and will be in you.
"To suppose that whatever God requireth of us that we have power of ourselves to do, is to make the cross and grace of Jesus Christ of none effect." - John Owen
