john 19:1-30

John 19:1–7 AV
Then Pilate therefore took Jesus, and scourged him. And the soldiers platted a crown of thorns, and put it on his head, and they put on him a purple robe, And said, Hail, King of the Jews! and they smote him with their hands. Pilate therefore went forth again, and saith unto them, Behold, I bring him forth to you, that ye may know that I find no fault in him. Then came Jesus forth, wearing the crown of thorns, and the purple robe. And Pilate saith unto them, Behold the man! When the chief priests therefore and officers saw him, they cried out, saying, Crucify him, crucify him. Pilate saith unto them, Take ye him, and crucify him: for I find no fault in him. The Jews answered him, We have a law, and by our law he ought to die, because he made himself the Son of God.
John 19:8–15 AV
When Pilate therefore heard that saying, he was the more afraid; And went again into the judgment hall, and saith unto Jesus, Whence art thou? But Jesus gave him no answer. Then saith Pilate unto him, Speakest thou not unto me? knowest thou not that I have power to crucify thee, and have power to release thee? Jesus answered, Thou couldest have no power at all against me, except it were given thee from above: therefore he that delivered me unto thee hath the greater sin. And from thenceforth Pilate sought to release him: but the Jews cried out, saying, If thou let this man go, thou art not Caesar’s friend: whosoever maketh himself a king speaketh against Caesar. When Pilate therefore heard that saying, he brought Jesus forth, and sat down in the judgment seat in a place that is called the Pavement, but in the Hebrew, Gabbatha. And it was the preparation of the passover, and about the sixth hour: and he saith unto the Jews, Behold your King! But they cried out, Away with him, away with him, crucify him. Pilate saith unto them, Shall I crucify your King? The chief priests answered, We have no king but Caesar.
John 19:16–23 AV
Then delivered he him therefore unto them to be crucified. And they took Jesus, and led him away. And he bearing his cross went forth into a place called the place of a skull, which is called in the Hebrew Golgotha: Where they crucified him, and two other with him, on either side one, and Jesus in the midst. And Pilate wrote a title, and put it on the cross. And the writing was, JESUS OF NAZARETH THE KING OF THE JEWS. This title then read many of the Jews: for the place where Jesus was crucified was nigh to the city: and it was written in Hebrew, and Greek, and Latin. Then said the chief priests of the Jews to Pilate, Write not, The King of the Jews; but that he said, I am King of the Jews. Pilate answered, What I have written I have written. Then the soldiers, when they had crucified Jesus, took his garments, and made four parts, to every soldier a part; and also his coat: now the coat was without seam, woven from the top throughout.
John 19:24–30 AV
They said therefore among themselves, Let us not rend it, but cast lots for it, whose it shall be: that the scripture might be fulfilled, which saith, They parted my raiment among them, and for my vesture they did cast lots. These things therefore the soldiers did. Now there stood by the cross of Jesus his mother, and his mother’s sister, Mary the wife of Cleophas, and Mary Magdalene. When Jesus therefore saw his mother, and the disciple standing by, whom he loved, he saith unto his mother, Woman, behold thy son! Then saith he to the disciple, Behold thy mother! And from that hour that disciple took her unto his own home. After this, Jesus knowing that all things were now accomplished, that the scripture might be fulfilled, saith, I thirst. Now there was set a vessel full of vinegar: and they filled a spunge with vinegar, and put it upon hyssop, and put it to his mouth. When Jesus therefore had received the vinegar, he said, It is finished: and he bowed his head, and gave up the ghost.
John the apostle of christ looks at the account of Jesus from an aspect of love.
in johns acount of the life of jesus we see the humanity of christ with all of his attributes
In john we find the the gospel in a nut shell john 3 :16
we find all the i am here also
i am the good shepherd
iam the bread
i am the vine
i am the resurrection
but the aspect that i want us to look at this morning is the cross
this simplest of things, an instrument of great torcher has become to the christian both a place of sacrifice and an emblem of forgivness.
The cross,or stake was from the ealiest times to display the most wontant of criminals.
Heads of criminals were hung on stakes at the entrance to the city to deter people from doing wrong.
The Romans used this as a painfull way to die and kept it for only those slaves and enermies of the state . It was deened to harsh a way for a citizen of rome to die of.
so why Jesus
well he wasnt a Roman but was he a enermy of the state.
Its true he brought a new way of life that would sweep through the known world useing the paths that the romans had created.
Never under estimate what God can do through the lives of heathens that will make a way for the spreading of the gosple.
one of the Things that non christians ask did jesus really die on a cross.
John in his writting makes note several times to write down particular names so that the student can cross reffrence these so as check the details.
In johns writting we are given just a climps into the life of pilate
Who was pilate? roman governor he was an notoriious anti semite and in the christian creed the magistrate under whom Jesus christ suffered.
picture of pilate from the statue at the base of the holy stairs in rome.
he came to power in AD 26
what had he done to upset the jews
he moved the roman carason from ceaserrea to Jerursalem why did this upset the jews
The imperials flags were flown in the holy city
we saw just how powerful he was and what he could do the scourging in verse 1
John 19:1 AV
Then Pilate therefore took Jesus, and scourged him.
what was this scourging
explain
the soldiers platted a crown of thorns
John 19:2 AV
And the soldiers platted a crown of thorns, and put it on his head, and they put on him a purple robe,
picture of the thorn crown
they mocked him
John 19:3 AV
And said, Hail, King of the Jews! and they smote him with their hands.
he was made to carry his own cross
John 19:17 AV
And he bearing his cross went forth into a place called the place of a skull, which is called in the Hebrew Golgotha:
all this was done to speed up the ultimate which was death
here we see the son of God who knew no sin became sin for
Galatians 3:13 AV
Christ hath redeemed us from the curse of the law, being made a curse for us: for it is written, Cursed is every one that hangeth on a tree:
Picture of Jesus on the cross
WHY DID HE DO THIS BECAUSE HE LOVE YOU AND ME.
Romans 5:8 AV
But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.
You might ask what is a sinner and am i one.
1 John 3:4 AV
Whosoever committeth sin transgresseth also the law: for sin is the transgression of the law.
does this mean me
Romans 3:23 AV
For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God;
so i understand that i am a sinner what will happen to me
Romans 6:23 AV
For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.
i said last week that John was the book of i ams well these are the most important i ams you would need.
John 11:25 AV
Jesus said unto her, I am the resurrection, and the life: he that believeth in me, though he were dead, yet shall he live:
John 14:6 AV
Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.
if you are dead in your trespasses and sins
Paul reminds us
Ephesians 2:1 AV
And you hath he quickened, who were dead in trespasses and sins;
you could say that all these scriptures were written after the even so they could make them tie up to Jesus.

Isaiah 53:1–12 AV
Who hath believed our report? and to whom is the arm of the LORD revealed? For he shall grow up before him as a tender plant, and as a root out of a dry ground: he hath no form nor comeliness; and when we shall see him, there is no beauty that we should desire him. He is despised and rejected of men; a man of sorrows, and acquainted with grief: and we hid as it were our faces from him; he was despised, and we esteemed him not. Surely he hath borne our griefs, and carried our sorrows: yet we did esteem him stricken, smitten of God, and afflicted. But he was wounded for our transgressions, he was bruised for our iniquities: the chastisement of our peace was upon him; and with his stripes we are healed. All we like sheep have gone astray; we have turned every one to his own way; and the LORD hath laid on him the iniquity of us all. He was oppressed, and he was afflicted, yet he opened not his mouth: he is brought as a lamb to the slaughter, and as a sheep before her shearers is dumb, so he openeth not his mouth. He was taken from prison and from judgment: and who shall declare his generation? for he was cut off out of the land of the living: for the transgression of my people was he stricken. And he made his grave with the wicked, and with the rich in his death; because he had done no violence, neither was any deceit in his mouth. Yet it pleased the LORD to bruise him; he hath put him to grief: when thou shalt make his soul an offering for sin, he shall see his seed, he shall prolong his days, and the pleasure of the LORD shall prosper in his hand. He shall see of the travail of his soul, and shall be satisfied: by his knowledge shall my righteous servant justify many; for he shall bear their iniquities. Therefore will I divide him a portion with the great, and he shall divide the spoil with the strong; because he hath poured out his soul unto death: and he was numbered with the transgressors; and he bare the sin of many, and made intercession for the transgressors.
in our church arround some peoples knecks they were a cross
The cross which Jesus died upon reminds us that he was our sacrifice
the empty cross shows to every one that the work of redemption is complete and there is nothing more to be done.
the cross is both and end of a life and the beginning of a new life.
Jesus said in
John 19:30 AV
When Jesus therefore had received the vinegar, he said, It is finished: and he bowed his head, and gave up the ghost.
It is finished, what was finished not his life for many were to see him again
so what
The work of redemption the work of bringing man back into communion with God
It may be finished for the son of God but its just where our new life begins
our old life is layed down at the cross with all its sin and bondage and we take up our new life in Jesus.
where there was hatred there can come
love where there was turmoil there come come peace where there was indulgence can come self control and many other changers.
Im glad that coming to God is not a whole list of don’ts but a new list of do
because of the cross we can start again
because of the cross we can live again
because of the cross we can encounter God again
all because of the cross
the door way into life with our heavenly father.
your father may not have been good but our heavenly father is all you need and so much more.
