Jesus teaches on Heaven and Hell

John 14:1–7 ESV
“Let not your hearts be troubled. Believe in God; believe also in me. In my Father’s house are many rooms. If it were not so, would I have told you that I go to prepare a place for you? And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and will take you to myself, that where I am you may be also. And you know the way to where I am going.” Thomas said to him, “Lord, we do not know where you are going. How can we know the way?” Jesus said to him, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me. If you had known me, you would have known my Father also. From now on you do know him and have seen him.”

What this exposes is the true nature of human desire.

Jesus is the one who fulfills your truest human desire, and not the way you imagine.

“Let not your hearts be troubled...”

Jesus is about to Die on the cross, and for the disciples this is a troubling prospect.
They had pinned the fulfillment of thier human desires on Jesus, but not the right way
Power and influence was going to get them to the list of human desires.
Jesus was going to bring God’s reign and they where going ot be important in it…they are losing hope in that reality.
What is our hope for God’s rule and reign…what are you praying for that you are not saying out loud...
Oh God I wish I was thinner
Oh God I wish people liked me more
I wish I had a better phone
I wish I had better social media strategy
I wish I had a macbook pro with i7
I wish could be a world travler
I wish I had a cooler car
I wish my kid where well behaved...
Oh God I wish I could stand in your presence.

Jesus is the one who fulfills your truest human desire, and not the way you imagine.

In my Father’s house are many rooms.

John 14:2–3 ESV
In my Father’s house are many rooms. If it were not so, would I have told you that I go to prepare a place for you? And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and will take you to myself, that where I am you may be also.
I have a Mansion on a hill...
I've got a mansion just over the hilltop In that bright land where we'll never grow old And some day yonder we will never more wander But walk on streets that are purest gold

The human need that is being met is the: the Presence of God
Sustanance (food)
Vocation (Work)
Community (Fame)
Heritage (Legacy)
Weather or not this is literal here is what is important… Its the presence of God you want, that is source of the other things.

Jesus is the one who fulfills your truest human desire, and not the way you imagine.

I am the Way, the Truth and the Light...

John 14:5–6 ESV
Thomas said to him, “Lord, we do not know where you are going. How can we know the way?” Jesus said to him, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.
Let us say you are on a plane and its looking to land...
Let us say you are looking for a candidate to perform your brain surgery...
Let us say you are looking for directions to Heaven...
The irony is that Jesus does not give us directions to heaven…he is heaven.
What makes Jesus claim more creadible than the other claims around it?

Jesus is the one who fulfills your truest human desire, and not the way you imagine.

Living forever apart from Jesus...

A prison of our own design…where we throw away the key.
Hell is the place where God is not, where you are left with yourself to fulfill your own desires for eternity…Sounds good? Think about who you are for a minute and if you would even want that?

Jesus is the one who fulfills your truest human desire, and not the way you imagine.

Jesus makes a spot for us in the presence of God…at a huge cost...

John 14:3 ESV
And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and will take you to myself, that where I am you may be also.
