2. To help us grow spiritually

How does the local church help us grow spiritually?

A) serving - I started out by cleaning and mowing the lawn

B) learning God’s word - most of the Bible schools I’ve been to is through the local church. Sunday sermons.

C) We rub each other the wrong way - we learn to forgive

D) It is impossible to make disciples aside from the church of Jesus Christ. Look at it from this perspective: the New Testament is full of commands to do this or that for “one another.” Love one another, pray for one another, encourage one another, etc. So how can we teach people to “observe all that I have commanded” if they have no one to love, pray for, or encourage? It’s impossible to “one another” yourself. It’s impossible to follow Jesus alone. We can’t claim to follow Jesus if we neglect the church He created, the church He died for, the church He entrusted His mission to.

Teaching people to obey what Jesus commanded is a never-ending process that requires us to intertwine our lives with the Christians around us. As disciple makers, we will join together with other believers, help them overcome the sin that holds them back, and challenge them to grow into more effective disciple makers

2. All the epistles of the New Testament are addressed to local churches or to leaders of local churches.

3. All ministries, which are God’s gifts, are given to the local bodies to equip saints for ministry to one another.

Apostles, prophets, evangelists, pastors and teachers can minister only to saints who assemble together in fellowship (Eph. 4:11–16).

4. Believers are commanded by Jesus to partake of the holy communion together until His Return (1 Cor. 11:23–26).

5. The operation of the gifts of the Spirit can function only in a local body.

Speaking of the operation of the gifts, Paul said: “Seek that ye may excel to the edifying of the church” (1 Cor. 14:12).

6. As members of the Body of Christ, believers are related not only to Christ, the “Head,” but they are related one to another in the Body.

“So we, being many, are one body in Christ, and every one members one of another” (Rom. 12:5). An arm that decided to sever all relationship with the rest of the body would be useless, even though it had communication with the head; for it would need blood pumped by the heart and purified by the lungs and kidneys. (1 Cor. 12:14–17).

7. We are told that God places members in the Body as it pleases Him (1 Cor. 12:18).

8. In order for Christians to carry out the commission of Christ, there must be fellowship, growth of the visible church, and the mutual work of evangelism and worldwide missions (Acts 2:41–47; 11:26–30; 13:1–3).
