Introduction

Introduction

General: I’m in the middle of my second year as the Lead Pastor of LakeView. Year 1 = listen, learn, love. Year 2 = prayer. Year 3 = begin to pursue the vision God gives us…
Personal: Why are we here? What is the purpose of church? Why do we come together on Sunday mornings to sing and listen to someone talk to us about the Bible? Why did God create the Church? Why didn’t He do something different? What is His plan for the Church in general, and what is His plan for LakeView Church specifically, and what is His plan for you and for me personally?
Biblical: After His resurrection, Jesus spent 40 days teaching His disciples, getting them ready to lead this new movement called Christianity. After 40 days, He ascended into Heaven, and just before He ascended He gave the disciples a mission, the Great Commission, which is the mission of every Christian and every church.
Subject
What is our mission? What is our assignment from God?

Body

Matthew 28:16–20 NIV
16 Then the eleven disciples went to Galilee, to the mountain where Jesus had told them to go. 17 When they saw him, they worshiped him; but some doubted. 18 Then Jesus came to them and said, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. 19 Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20 and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.”
Our mission is to make disciples. Our assignment is to help people follow Jesus.
Matthew 28:19–20 NIV
19 Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20 and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.”
Exposition
Our mission is not...
Making disciples involves two things:
Baptizing them = evangelism
Baptism service is Feb 17, class is next Sunday…
Telling people about Jesus doesn’t have to be scary or hard. The most natural and easiest form of evangelism is what we’re calling “come-and-see evangelism.” See ; .
John 1:35–46 NIV
35 The next day John was there again with two of his disciples. 36 When he saw Jesus passing by, he said, “Look, the Lamb of God!” 37 When the two disciples heard him say this, they followed Jesus. 38 Turning around, Jesus saw them following and asked, “What do you want?” They said, “Rabbi” (which means “Teacher”), “where are you staying?” 39 “Come,” he replied, “and you will see.” So they went and saw where he was staying, and they spent that day with him. It was about four in the afternoon. 40 Andrew, Simon Peter’s brother, was one of the two who heard what John had said and who had followed Jesus. 41 The first thing Andrew did was to find his brother Simon and tell him, “We have found the Messiah” (that is, the Christ). 42 And he brought him to Jesus. Jesus looked at him and said, “You are Simon son of John. You will be called Cephas” (which, when translated, is Peter). 43 The next day Jesus decided to leave for Galilee. Finding Philip, he said to him, “Follow me.” 44 Philip, like Andrew and Peter, was from the town of Bethsaida. 45 Philip found Nathanael and told him, “We have found the one Moses wrote about in the Law, and about whom the prophets also wrote—Jesus of Nazareth, the son of Joseph.” 46 “Nazareth! Can anything good come from there?” Nathanael asked. “Come and see,” said Philip.
John 1:35
Teaching them to obey = helping them follow Jesus
A disciple is someone who is actually following Jesus… even if they’re the last one in line!
A disciple is not…
Everyone moves at a different pace. Discipleship is not a one-size-fits-all manufacturing process.
Illustration: One of the most amazing things about being your pastor is watching God work in your lives…
Application
The command to make disciples implies that we are disciples. We have to be disciples before we can make disciples. So how do you become a disciple who is actually following Jesus?
Come to Jesus
Become like Jesus
Share Jesus with others
When it comes to following Jesus, the most important step you can take is the next one. What is your next step?
Our mission begins and ends with Jesus. Our assignment is all about Jesus.
Matthew 28:18–20 NIV
18 Then Jesus came to them and said, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. 19 Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20 and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.”
Exposition
His authority, not ours...
His presence and power, not ours…
Our mission is to be disciples who make disciples. Our mission begins and ends with Jesus. In other words,
Our mission is to live for the glory of Christ and the common good. It’s not about us. We need to get over ourselves…
Matthew 16:24 NIV
24 Then Jesus said to his disciples, “Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross and follow me.
Application: God gave me a prophetic word to share with you...
Jesus wasn’t cool. He was crucified.
Galatians 2:20 NIV
20 I have been crucified with Christ and I no longer live, but Christ lives in me. The life I now live in the body, I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me.
Until those words are true of us individually and collectively, we will not accomplish the mission God has given us.
Our mission this year is to be crucified with Christ, so that Christ lives in us.
Our mission is to live for the glory of Christ and the common good.
Our mission is to live for the glory of Christ and the common good.

Conclusion

Our mission is to be disciples who make disciples.
Our mission begins and ends with Jesus.
Our mission is to live for the glory of Christ and the common good.
Our mission this year is to be crucified with Christ, so that Christ lives in us.
If you stick around for the congregational meeting, we’re going to talk in more detail about the vision God has given us for how we can pursue this mission to make disciples for the glory of Christ and the common good.
