1 Thessalonians 4:9–12 HCSB
About brotherly love: You don’t need me to write you because you yourselves are taught by God to love one another. In fact, you are doing this toward all the brothers in the entire region of Macedonia. But we encourage you, brothers, to do so even more, to seek to lead a quiet life, to mind your own business, and to work with your own hands, as we commanded you, so that you may walk properly in the presence of outsiders and not be dependent on anyone.

Peaceful living

1 Thessalonians 4:11 HCSB
to seek to lead a quiet life, to mind your own business, and to work with your own hands, as we commanded you,
This is not silence, but rather “settled” or undisturbed. Someone said Paul is say be less chaotic, not less celebratory.
Remember this is in relationship to growing in brotherly love.
Living a peaceful life means you don’t have to show up for every fight, join every argument, take up every offense, etc.
A modern way of saying this is “not my circus, not my monkeys”
Proverbs 15:1 HCSB
A gentle answer turns away anger, but a harsh word stirs up wrath.
This is one of those things where God has brought conviction to my heart.
“A christian who strives to be at peace with himself and God will be a source of peace to his brothers and sister.”
Jesus said “Blessed” or happy are the peacemakers.
Paul said to reject at divisive person.. a pot stirrer.
Guard against the chaos that some people always seems to bring with them into any situation.

Responsible Living

1 Thessalonians 4:11 HCSB
to seek to lead a quiet life, to mind your own business, and to work with your own hands, as we commanded you,
practice one’s own things.
“I was walking past the mental ward, when I heard all the patients shouting 13 13 13 . The fence was pretty high, but I found a gap to look through and see what was happening. That’s when one of the residents poked me in the eye with a stick, and the crowd starting shouting 14 14 14. That’s how I learned to mind my own business.
The great theologian Hank Williams Sr. said “why don’t you mind your own business? Well if you mind your own business, you won’t be minding mine.
Are there times that we have to become involved when someone needs us… sure.. but as a general practice, we have plenty to take care of on our side of the fence.
This is why gossip is a sin. This is why choosing sides in someone else’s problems is wrong minded.
Paul gave a warning against young widows that can extend to anyone in
1 Timothy 5:13 HCSB
At the same time, they also learn to be idle, going from house to house; they are not only idle, but are also gossips and busybodies, saying things they shouldn’t say.
Minding our own business will extend the bounds of brotherly love.

Productive Living

1 Thessalonians 4:11 HCSB
to seek to lead a quiet life, to mind your own business, and to work with your own hands, as we commanded you,
God has designed us for productivity.
When I am self-supporting, I am not a burden to others which demonstrates brotherly love.
When I am self-supporting, I am able to be a blessing to others who are NOT ABLE.
Notice it says work with hands. It is said that every Jewish boy was taught a trade, even if they were wealthy. It is a wonderful, godly trait to work to provide for yourself and your family.
By the way, sometimes you can’t separate American politics from this. The tax rates that some in Congress propose, removes the need for productivity, and the drive to be self-supporting.
When benevolence is forced, it becomes coercion.
We need to heed two lessons.
If we are able to work, we should take care of our own business.
If we are unable to work, we should accept the brotherly love of generous people who can.

Circumspect Living

1 Thessalonians 4:12 HCSB
so that you may walk properly in the presence of outsiders and not be dependent on anyone.
An emphasis on the unbelievers.
Unbelievers are watching how you live. Work. Pay your own way. Pay your bills. Christ should be well represented and reflected in the way you do these things to show brotherly love.
An emphasis on brothers and sisters.
Don’t be a burden.
When you live a chaotic life, it is a burden to others.
When you don’t mind your own business, it increases the burdens of others.
When you don’t take care of your own financial affairs, it increases the burdens of others.
Anytime there is a message like this, I am concerned that it will miss people who need to take heed, and reinforce someone else’s proud independence who really needs help.
