Matthew 5:33-37
33 “Again you have heard that it was said to those of old, ‘You shall not swear falsely, but shall perform to the Lord what you have sworn.’ 34 But I say to you, Do not take an oath at all, either by heaven, for it is the throne of God, 35 or by the earth, for it is his footstool, or by Jerusalem, for it is the city of the great King. 36 And do not take an oath by your head, for you cannot make one hair white or black. 37 Let what you say be simply ‘Yes’ or ‘No’; anything more than this comes from evil.

The Jewish teachers said/believed “The world stands fast on three things, on justice, on truth, and on peace.”

“One who has given his word and who changes it is as bad as an idolater.”
1) Frivolous Swearing
—> common place to make a promise, oath on something trivial.
—> using sacred names and sacred things for the trivial and mundane
2) Evasive Swearing
—> binding oaths —> those directly calling on God
—> non-binding oaths —> swearing by the things of God
—> Putting God in a transaction or keeping His out of one
—> Putting God in a transaction or keeping His out of one
—> Using the scape goat of not using the name of God directly but instead using the things of God but not the actual name.
34 But I say to you, Do not take an oath at all, either by heaven, for it is the throne of God, 35 or by the earth, for it is his footstool, or by Jerusalem, for it is the city of the great King.
Stop claiming God in your oaths because he is not accountable to you.
You have no power to make/force God to do anything.
This also applies to ALL that is God’s; heaven, earth, even the city of Jerusalem.
No matter where we go we are under God’s watchful eye.
(people that will cuss all day at the office but won’t cuss in church)
36 And do not take an oath by your head, for you cannot make one hair white or black.
hair dye was around in ancient Egypt (1st century) he isn’t being literal.
He isn’t referring to the hair itself but to the process of aging.
So in this matter even our lives are not our own but they are in God’s hands.
37 Let what you say be simply ‘Yes’ or ‘No’; anything more than this comes from evil.
We need to be authentic to who we are and who God is making us into.
Our character should be enough.
We live in a world that has built itself on lies.
We have compartmentalized the parts of our life and become different people.

It is time for us to reset the standard.
In a fake news, social media reality world, we as Christians are called to be authentic, transparent.
We shouldn’t need to justify our words with promises people should know where we stand and know our words are truthful.
