Earthly Got Their Honor From God

Priests were called by God to intercede for people in matters regarding God. They had certain rights that were given to them. For example the writer of Hebrews points out that they were to bring sacrifices and gifts to God for the remission of sins. The person bringing the sacrifice could not offer it on the alter because God did not give them that right. Only the priest was given the right to offer sacrifices. God chose them to be the one to intercede on behalf of the people.

Today Jesus is our high priest. We come to the Father through Him

Jesus *said to him, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life; no one comes to the Father but through Me.

We cannot enter the presence of the Lord without going through Jesus Christ. He is the one who has made the sacrifice for us. Jesus has been given the right to give the sacrifice for us. He laid down his life on tee cross of Calvary. His sacrifice was enough that we don’t have to keep offering sacrifice for our sin. His sacrifice has paid the price for all our sin. He is perfect!

Earthly priests identified with the people in their sin.

The earthly priests were not perfect like Jesus. They commited sin as well. As a result they would have to offer sacrifices for themselves as well as the people. Because they were sinners themselves, they could deal gently with the people. This is because they sinned the same way the people sinned.

I find this interesting, in that God called sinners to do the work of the Lord. I also see value in the fact that the priest should deal gently with the people because they were no better than the people that they were making sacrifices for.

I believe we can learn a valuable lesson from this. We need to deal gently with sinners. In order for us to do this we must recognize that we ourselves are sinners. When we have a “holier than thou” attitude, we are not dealing gently with sinners. We must be compassionate with people that are not walking with the Lord. When we deal gently with them they will be more receptive to listening to you. When we are harsh towards them they will not listen and will avoid us. I am not saying that we dismiss or accept their sin, but we must identify with our own sin in order to deal gently with others.

“Do not judge so that you will not be judged. 2 For in the way you judge, you will be judged; and [a]by your standard of measure, it will be measured to you. 3 Why do you look at the speck that is in your brother’s eye, but do not notice the log that is in your own eye? 4 Or how [b]can you say to your brother, ‘Let me take the speck out of your eye,’ and behold, the log is in your own eye? 5 You hypocrite, first take the log out of your own eye, and then you will see clearly to take the speck out of your brother’s eye.

We receive no honor by judging others harshly. It is when we lead a sinner to Christ through gentleness that we receive honor. This is because God called us to this.

Jesus is the High Priest That Deals Gently With Us!

His prayers were heard because of His piety

Jesus lived a difficult life. He lived his life in the shadow of the cross. He knew that the cross was his fate. This is the reason He came to earth. He agonized in the flesh and petitioned God to change His fate.

39 And He went a little beyond them, and fell on His face and prayed, saying, “My Father, if it is possible, let this cup pass from Me; yet not as I will, but as You will.” 40 And He *came to the disciples and *found them sleeping, and *said to Peter, “So, you men could not keep watch with Me for one hour? 41 Keep watching and praying that you may not enter into temptation; the spirit is willing, but the flesh is weak.”

42 He went away again a second time and prayed, saying, “My Father, if this cannot pass away unless I drink it, Your will be done.” 43 Again He came and found them sleeping, for their eyes were heavy. 44 And He left them again, and went away and prayed a third time, saying the same thing once more. 45 Then He *came to the disciples and *said to them, “[k]Are you still sleeping and resting? Behold, the hour is at hand and the Son of Man is being betrayed into the hands of sinners. 46 Get up, let us be going; behold, the one who betrays Me is at hand!”

Jesus was about to take on the sins of the world. For the first time ever God would forsake the Son. Jesus called out on the cross :

“Eli, Eli, lama sabachthani?” that is, “My God, My God, why have You forsaken Me?”

This is the only time in scripture that Jesus refers to the Father as God.

Piety is deep respect for God. We see this in that He was willing to endure something He didn’t want to because it was the Father’s will.

There will be times in our lives that we are called to endure for the Lord. We must have piety for Him and live obediently.

Jesus learned obedience by what he suffered.

Jesus lived a life of suffering.

He was born into poverty.

He was born into a culture that was second class to the Romans.

He was tormented by Satan without mercy.

He was rejected by the people that he came to save.

Many times Jesus was forced out of a town for proclaiming truth.

He was betrayed by 12 of his best friends

He endured the public humiliation of the cross.

He endured the pain of torture of the cross.

He had to watch His mom see him killed.

He took on the sins of the world.

He did all of this because He was being obedient to the Father.

But the Lord was pleased To crush Him, [a]putting Him to grief; If [b]He would render Himself as a guilt offering, He will see His [c]offspring, He will prolong His days, And the [d]good pleasure of the Lord will prosper in His hand. 11 As a result of the [e]anguish of His soul, He will see [f]it and be satisfied; By His knowledge the Righteous One, My Servant, will justify the many, As He will bear their iniquities.

Obedience is learned when we suffer. When things are easy or what we want then obedience is easy. It is when things are difficult and not what we want that we learn true obedience. For example, the Lord may say stay faithful to me and I will give you a season of peace in your life. It will be easy to be faithful because we will receive peace in our life. But what if God says, be faithful to me and I am going to bring tremendous adversity in your life. It would be much more difficult to be faithful. But what we will find is a God that is faithful to us during our time of adversity. We can only learn this through suffering.

Jesus was made High Priest in the order of Melchizedek.

Jesus was made perfect in that He was respectful of the Lord and endured the cross in obedience to God.

5 Have this attitude [e]in yourselves which was also in Christ Jesus, 6 who, although He existed in the form of God, did not regard equality with God a thing to be [f]grasped, 7 but [g]emptied Himself, taking the form of a bond-servant, and being made in the likeness of men. 8 Being found in appearance as a man, He humbled Himself by becoming obedient to the point of death, even death [h]on a cross. 9 For this reason also, God highly exalted Him, and bestowed on Him the name which is above every name, 10 so that at the name of Jesus every knee will bow, of those who are in heaven and on earth and under the earth, 11 and that every tongue will confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.

Grow Up In Christ

The writer of Hebrews chastised the church because they were not growing in the Lord. They desired the comfortable life over the obedient life. They wanted to live their lives knowing about the elementary things of God rather than receiving the more difficult things of God. The writer of Hebrews calls them babies. He said that they could only handle spiritual milk. They were not prepared for the solid food of the mature.

Friend, I am afraid that there are many in the church that are just fine being spiritual babies. They have not sought the will of God, but instead they live the way they want to and give God a little of their time and resources. As long as we walk in our own desires and fail to pursue God’s we will continue to be spiritual babies.

It is when we devote the entirety of our being to the Lord that we grow up. It is not easy and requires great sacrifice. However, when we do this we will grow in maturity to the Lord.

And He was saying to them all, “If anyone wishes to come after Me, he must deny himself, and take up his cross daily and follow Me.
