The Teachings of Jesus

Jesus and the Law

What are some of the most interesting Rules you see in the world around you?
Don’t touch the walls
Infield Fly Rule
Driver must be wearing shoes
Disney Rules
Disney employees aren’t technically “employees”—they’re “Cast Members.” And no, not just the ones who play actual Disney characters.
And what’s the most important thing a Cast Member has to do? Stay in character, of course. If you’re playing a Disney character, that character’s world becomes your world. You’re not allowed to make references to any pop culture that exists outside of the Disney universe.
Just like you have to be 44 inches tall to ride Space Mountain, you have to be a certain height to portray certain Disney roles. Most notably, anyone aspiring to play a Disney princess—yes, any princess—must be between 5’4″ and 5’8″. If you’re shorter, between 4’11” and 5’2″, you can play other characters, including Alice from Alice in Wonderland and Wendy from Peter Pan.
From hair to fingernails, Disney has lots of requirements for the physical appearances of their employees. Women’s hair needs to be in a “classic” style and a natural-looking color.
The understanding of the rules in Jesus Day
Disney employees have a special way of pointing. If they’re giving directions, they’re not allowed to point with one finger, since it could potentially be considered rude. Instead, they employ a special Disney point, often with two fingers or sometimes even with the whole hand.
The understanding of the rules in Jesus Day
Pharisees
Fence around the Law
Jesus Corrects the Pharisees understanding of righteous action
Jesus Corrects the thinking that anything Goes
“What are some of the unbreakable social or moral codes of our day of our day?”
Main Point: Jesus shows us that “law keeping” is impossible so we would lean on Grace.

Jesus begins with a well known Law

Matthew 5:21 ESV
“You have heard that it was said to those of old, ‘You shall not murder; and whoever murders will be liable to judgment.’
God had revealed himself and his character in the ten commandments.
There is nothing wrong in following this Law
There is a wrong way to follow this Law.
Can you think of a wrong way to follow these modern laws?
Seat Belt Law
Child Safety Laws
School Rules
Main Point: Jesus shows us that “law keeping” is impossible so we would lean on Grace.

Jesus updates the understanding of the Law

Matthew 5:22 ESV
But I say to you that everyone who is angry with his brother will be liable to judgment; whoever insults his brother will be liable to the council; and whoever says, ‘You fool!’ will be liable to the hell of fire.
Jesus shows us how performance based righteousness fails to change the heart.
In your house, what are considered good behaviors?
What can you do to get on your parent’s good side?
Flower Girl Example.
Main Point: Jesus shows us that “law keeping” is impossible so we would lean on Grace.

Jesus tells us how his kids should live.

Matthew 5:23–26 ESV
So if you are offering your gift at the altar and there remember that your brother has something against you, leave your gift there before the altar and go. First be reconciled to your brother, and then come and offer your gift. Come to terms quickly with your accuser while you are going with him to court, lest your accuser hand you over to the judge, and the judge to the guard, and you be put in prison. Truly, I say to you, you will never get out until you have paid the last penny.
Because we are God’s kids we are called to live differently.
Keep short accounts
Are you the kind of person who holds a grudge or do things roll off your back?
Do you think anyone has any reason to hold a grudge against you?
What are some thing you can start do to in your own house to practice this kind of forgiveness?
Main Point: Jesus shows us that “law keeping” is impossible so we would lean on Grace.

Law keeping is impossible so God makes a way in Christ.
