Sin effects our relationships (Genesis 3:7-10)

“Then the eyes of both were opened…” (Genesis 3:7)
Genesis 3:7 ESV
Then the eyes of both were opened, and they knew that they were naked. And they sewed fig leaves together and made themselves loincloths.
· See verse 5
· Satan didn’t lie about what would happen.
· Satan’s lie was that it would be good.
1st thing lost was their relationship with each other
“They knew they were naked”
no longer saw each other as God did
This one thing is the source of so many relationship problems.
You cannot fully understand the tragedy of their response to sin unless you understand the depth of their relationship before sin.
Genesis 3:8 ESV
And they heard the sound of the Lord God walking in the garden in the cool of the day, and the man and his wife hid themselves from the presence of the Lord God among the trees of the garden.
2nd thing lost was their relationship with God.
They were afraid and hid from God
They arguably had the closest relationship to God of any human that waled the earth.
Write in your NOTES:
Both of these losses were immediate and happened before God had said anything to them.
· By itself, sin separates us from God and from the good God has for us.

Judgment before God (Genesis 3:9)

God sought man out
Man cannot hid from God
Where will you hide?
Hebrews 9:27 ESV
And just as it is appointed for man to die once, and after that comes judgment,
o All will be judged

Sin effects our blessing from God.

(Notice how the terms of God’s judgment parallels the terms of God’s blessings.)
Serpent:
Tempter of rising up to become like God now you are lowered to the ground.
More crafty (world sees it as beneficial) results in More cursed (God sees it as immoral)
Protoevangelium – first Gospel
You wanted to destroy man, (you will cause him to stumble for a while [bruise his heal]) But man will ultimately destroy you (Jesus the son of man)
Woman:
Your role to multiply the earth was a blessing now it will be labor
Your relationship with your husband was perfectly balanced and harmonious, now it will be indifferent and imbalanced.
Desire: not in a positive context.
Same relationship with & without sin’s involvement.
Man:
Was given dominion over the ground, but now will be subject to it.
Ground was blessed but now its cursed
Work will be painful
Instead of plentiful harvest you will fight thorns/thistles
Given the germ of physical death (till you return to the ground)
NOTE:
I wonder if Adam was ever in the field, in the hot part of the day, muscles burning from exhaustion, wipes the sweat from his brow as he takes drink of water and remembers his days in The Garden. That is a perfect example of the effects of sin.
Makes promises it will NEVER deliver
Demands a price higher than we ever expected
Sometimes we keep paying for it.
Why didn’t the penalty for their sin stop their broken relationships?
Was God just in handing out additional consequences for their sin?
Yes, God told them they would die.
Death is the consequence of sin
Spiritual Death & Physical Death
Romans 6:23 ESV
For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.
The wages of sin is still death.
God didn’t hand out additional consequences for their sin.
Consequences of sin are far greater than the devil wants us to believe.
But the gift of God is eternal life.
God still showed His grace by promising to overcome
Not all sin is equal, but all sin has a price!
God’s grace is sufficient, and Jesus paid the final price for our sin in death.
But that doesn’t mean we will be spared any consequences in life.
Such is the case with our sin.
Are you paying a price for your sin?
Will you let Jesus take the burden from you?
God told Paul, “My Grace is sufficient.”
Jesus has already paid the price for you sin
God want to also take the burden off your shoulders
But you need to ask
Accept the gift of salvation through Christ alone
Ask God to help you throw the yoke of sin off your should
