Our mission versus Christ’s Mission?
When the church loses sight of its mission, it drifts and becomes something else. A club, entertainment, social gathering…a hobby. Just something we do, not a mission we are called by God to fulfill!
10 For the Son of Man came to seek and to save the lost.”

27 And whoever does not carry their cross and follow me cannot be my disciple.
CONSIDER THE COST...
SALT IS WORTHLESS IF IT LOSES ITS SALTINESS…it is thrown out! WE ARE CALLED TO BE SALT!
The Problem
The Problem
1 Now the tax collectors and sinners were all gathering around to hear Jesus.
2 But the Pharisees and the teachers of the law muttered, “This man welcomes sinners and eats with them.”
3 Then Jesus told them this parable:
Is our attitude more like Jesus or the Pharisees and teachers of the law?
Jesus came to seek and save the lost. Jesus gives us three parables to show us how that is done!
THERE ARE THREE UNIQUE SITUATIONS HERE AS WELL!
4 “Suppose one of you has a hundred sheep and loses one of them. Doesn’t he leave the ninety-nine in the open country and go after the lost sheep until he finds it?
5 And when he finds it, he joyfully puts it on his shoulders
6 and goes home. Then he calls his friends and neighbors together and says, ‘Rejoice with me; I have found my lost sheep.’
7 I tell you that in the same way there will be more rejoicing in heaven over one sinner who repents than over ninety-nine righteous persons who do not need to repent.
Sheep often wander off. They were under the protection of the Shepherd, but they got distracted chasing after whatever was in front of them, and the next thing they know is they look up and wander how they got where they are?
Jesus says you have to leave the assembly and go out, seek and find the lost sheep, and carry it back home.
AND THEN YOU THROW A PARTY BECAUSE HEAVEN IS!
8 “Or suppose a woman has ten silver coins and loses one. Doesn’t she light a lamp, sweep the house and search carefully until she finds it?
9 And when she finds it, she calls her friends and neighbors together and says, ‘Rejoice with me; I have found my lost coin.’
10 In the same way, I tell you, there is rejoicing in the presence of the angels of God over one sinner who repents.”
Luke 15:8
What did this coin do to get lost? It was dropped.
Some people are lost because they have been dropped by life. Some of them have been carelessly dropped by people professing to be Christians.
Jesus says you light a lamp (day and night at great cost) and search the whole house until you find it!
And then you throw a party because heaven is!
11 Jesus continued: “There was a man who had two sons.
12 The younger one said to his father, ‘Father, give me my share of the estate.’ So he divided his property between them.
Who’s fault is this? The son.
The point of the 3 stories in the one parable of is that the lost never can find themselves, God must find them.
February 2019 Memory Verse
The Father didn’t mistreat the son, neither did the brother. The son simply believes it will be more fun if he experiences life outside of his Father’s house.
13 “Not long after that, the younger son got together all he had, set off for a distant country and there squandered his wealth in wild living.
14 After he had spent everything, there was a severe famine in that whole country, and he began to be in need.
15 So he went and hired himself out to a citizen of that country, who sent him to his fields to feed pigs.
16 He longed to fill his stomach with the pods that the pigs were eating, but no one gave him anything.
FAMINE! - This son is hungry. There’s a severe shortage of food, and he doesn’t have any. He has no wealth left to purchase what he needs. He finds himself in need of benevolence/charity.
What drives the son home? Physical needs.
17 “When he came to his senses, he said, ‘How many of my father’s hired servants have food to spare, and here I am starving to death!
18 I will set out and go back to my father and say to him: Father, I have sinned against heaven and against you.
19 I am no longer worthy to be called your son; make me like one of your hired servants.’
20 So he got up and went to his father. “But while he was still a long way off, his father saw him and was filled with compassion for him; he ran to his son, threw his arms around him and kissed him.
Luke 15:17-
What drives the son home? Physical needs.
He can’t find any help in this far off country, so he decides to go back where life was good in hopes of finding food. BECAUSE LIFE GETS ROUGH, HE RETURNS HOME TO LOOK FOR HELP WITH HIS PHYSICAL NEEDS.
V. 18 is the same words Pharaoh uses to try to appease God and get rid of the plagues.
20 So he got up and went to his father. “But while he was still a long way off, his father saw him and was filled with compassion for him; he ran to his son, threw his arms around him and kissed him.
21 “The son said to him, ‘Father, I have sinned against heaven and against you. I am no longer worthy to be called your son.’
22 “But the father said to his servants, ‘Quick! Bring the best robe and put it on him. Put a ring on his finger and sandals on his feet.
23 Bring the fattened calf and kill it. Let’s have a feast and celebrate.
24 For this son of mine was dead and is alive again; he was lost and is found.’ So they began to celebrate.
Luke 15:20
The Father is clearly looking for any sign of the son’s return, and when he sees it, he runs to meet him where he is!
And then he throws a party because heaven is!
25 “Meanwhile, the older son was in the field. When he came near the house, he heard music and dancing.
26 So he called one of the servants and asked him what was going on.
27 ‘Your brother has come,’ he replied, ‘and your father has killed the fattened calf because he has him back safe and sound.’
28 “The older brother became angry and refused to go in. So his father went out and pleaded with him.
29 But he answered his father, ‘Look! All these years I’ve been slaving for you and never disobeyed your orders. Yet you never gave me even a young goat so I could celebrate with my friends.
30 But when this son of yours who has squandered your property with prostitutes comes home, you kill the fattened calf for him!’
31 “ ‘My son,’ the father said, ‘you are always with me, and everything I have is yours.
32 But we had to celebrate and be glad, because this brother of yours was dead and is alive again; he was lost and is found.’ ”

The older brother was trying to be faithful to the father, but wasn’t in tune with the father’s heart!
He doesn’t even consider the prodigal to be his brother, “…this son of yours...”
He’s offended that there’s a celebration over the lost son because of what he had done in the past.

Lost isn’t a condemnation. Lost is a valuation! The lost person is valuable!
If someone is lost, they are worth finding! They are worth upending everything in order to bring them home!
In the parable of the lost sheep, the Good Shepherd went searching for the lost sheep.
In the parable of the lost silver, the woman went searching for her coin (or ring).
“ ‘Come. Follow me,’ Jesus said.
‘I will make you fishers of people.’
At once they left their nets and followed him.”
But in the parable of the lost son, no one went searching for the son.
-Mark 1:17-18
THE BROTHER AT HOME WAS SUPPOSED TO GO LOOKING FOR HIS BROTHER!!!!
Then it HIT ME.

Now I think that is one of the main points Jesus is making. Thats the parallel in the other two parables that is lacking in the prodigal son.
Jesus is trying to get them to see they should have been out there all along, looking for their lost brother!!
The Pharisees should have been out looking for the lost sons instead of staying home looking down their noses at them.

The point of the 3 stories in the one parable of is that the lost never can find themselves, God must find them, and he expects us to be the ones looking for them!
They get lost for a variety of reasons, and they get found in a variety of ways, but we are truly a Faith, Hope, and Love church that is committed to THE MISSION of Christ to seek and save the lost, we better be out there looking, and using every opportunity we have to find them!

Our theme this year is to bring HOPE to a dying world.
We need to bring HOPE to a LOST world that is valuable and worth hearing the message of HOPE that Christ offers!
Done through foreign missions, but it needs to be done right here at home as well!
Over the next several weeks leading up to Easter, and leading up to Worship in the Park we are going to be very focused on seeking and saving the lost in our community! IT STARTS TODAY!
Maybe you need to reach out to your ONE and start “seeking and finding” them. Invite them! Involve them in prayer. Be sure they know that they are worth the price Jesus paid for them.
Maybe you need to come home…perhaps it’s you that’s lost. We’re here to welcome and throw a party for you! You are worth saving. Won’t you let Jesus do that for you today?
