Recap: Last week we looked at the Foundations verse of and how we will be focusing on building our house on the foundation of Jesus.
To get a better understanding of what it looks like to build this foundation we started back in chapter 5 with the Beatitudes and looked at v. 3, and 10. because the both had the same reward listed and they are tied together with persecution and poor in spirit.
Today we will look at
3 “Blessed are the poor in spirit, For theirs is the kingdom of heaven.

I wanted to talk about the poor in spirit again, because it also ties into those that mourn as well as those that are persecuted for righteousness sake.
4 “Blessed are those who mourn, for they shall be comforted.
5 “Blessed are the meek, for they shall inherit the earth.

6 “Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they shall be satisfied.
At first glance with v. 4 it looks to be out of place, because we someone that is in mourning could not possibly be in God’s blessing. We can see how God comforting someone could be a blessing, but not the mourning part.
In a secular world view what comes to mind when you hear the word “mourn”?
Someone close to you has died.
loss of property.
A broken friendship.
In the context of v. 4, what do you think Jesus means by the word “mourn” and is it the same as the world view of mourning?

The Year of the Lord’s Favor
61 The Spirit of the Lord God is upon me,
because the Lord has anointed me
to bring good news to the poor;
he has sent me to bind up the brokenhearted,
to proclaim liberty to the captives,
and the opening of the prison to those who are bound;
2 to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favor,
and the day of vengeance of our God;
to comfort all who mourn;
We can see that the blessing is because the Messiah will bring the good news to the poor and proclaim liberty to the captives and comfort those who mourn.
Verse 5.
If we are mourning our own sins and the sins of the world against a Holy God, I think this is when God comforts us.
We can see a picture of Isaiah morning his sin when he sees the LORD of Hosts.

“Holy, holy, holy is the Lord of hosts;
the whole earth is full of his glory!”
4 And the foundations of the thresholds shook at the voice of him who called, and the house was filled with smoke. 5 And I said: “Woe is me! For I am lost; for I am a man of unclean lips, and I dwell in the midst of a people of unclean lips; for my eyes have seen the King, the Lord of hosts!”
What do you think caused Isaiah to be so undone?
5. Blessed are the meek(humble), for they shall inherit the earth.
Understand that meekness is not to be confused with weakness.

True meekness may be a quality of the strong, those who could assert themselves but choose not to do so. The strong who qualify for this blessing are the strong who decline to domineer. Self-assertion is never a Christian virtue; rather, it is Christian to be busy in lowly service and to refuse to engage in the conduct that merely advances one’s personal aims.

6. Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they shall be satisfied.
Are you hungry and thirsty for righteousness, you will be satisfied. I just went through a class with the ambulance on domestic violence in America and every minute there is 24 people that are abused in some way. This is in there home or with someone that is supposed to be protecting them. In Sanpete county last month they had 24 calls out that were domestic violence related incedent.
When we look at this passage in this light, it makes us want Gods righteousness to come.
We live in a fallen world, were bad things can happen, but these versus are promises from our Lord.

33 But seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be added to you.
This is not a prosperity message. I am not teaching that if we seek righteousness all our wildest dreams will come true. God is not a genie.
When we build our foundation on the Lord’s promises, we can know that we have an inheritance waiting for us. These promises may not happen in this world, but they will happen.
: is talking about worrying about food and clothing and the basic needs and how God will take care of His people how he sees fit to do so.
