Luke 5:37–39 NASB95
“And no one puts new wine into old wineskins; otherwise the new wine will burst the skins and it will be spilled out, and the skins will be ruined. “But new wine must be put into fresh wineskins. “And no one, after drinking old wine wishes for new; for he says, ‘The old is good enough.’ ”

Jesus was Different

The Jews noticed how Jesus did things differently
Jesus and his disciples freely mingled with the crowd and often went to feasts. ()
the Pharisees practiced fasting and praying as a religious obligation
John developed an ascetic lifestyle and frugal living as part of his nazarite call, and his disciples followed his practices
Jesus and His disciples did things that most Jews would not do in a Sabbath day. ()
they picked ears of corn in the field and ate without washing their hands
Jesus and his disciples was frequently seen in public and social gatherings.
the Pharisees we frequently fasting and praying (twice a week)
John and his disciples were out in the wilderness and separated themselves from the public
Jesus explained: now is not the time for fasting, but for celebration.
Luke 5.34-3
Luke 5:34–35 NASB95
And Jesus said to them, “You cannot make the attendants of the bridegroom fast while the bridegroom is with them, can you? “But the days will come; and when the bridegroom is taken away from them, then they will fast in those days.”
He likened Himself to a Bridegroom - whose presence was cause for rejoicing!
The time for fasting would be when He is taken away (killed by his enemies)

Jesus was Introducing a New Order

Jesus’ presence marks the beginning of a new era in the plan of God.
He showed them a new way of understanding the Law ()
He showed them a new of worship ()
He showed them a different kind of rest ()
Jesus used parables to emphasize the incompatibility of the old and the new order
Luke 5:36 NASB95
And He was also telling them a parable: “No one tears a piece of cloth from a new garment and puts it on an old garment; otherwise he will both tear the new, and the piece from the new will not match the old.
Luke 5.3
mixing the new garment with the old garment will only destroy both
Luke 5:37 NASB95
“And no one puts new wine into old wineskins; otherwise the new wine will burst the skins and it will be spilled out, and the skins will be ruined.
Luke 5.37
the new wine and the old wineskin does not fit each other
The New Order is the New Covenant
the New Covenant is put into effect by the Blood of Jesus Christ
Luke 22:20 NASB95
And in the same way He took the cup after they had eaten, saying, “This cup which is poured out for you is the new covenant in My blood.
the New Covenant is “of the Spirit”
2 Corinthians 3:6 NASB95
who also made us adequate as servants of a new covenant, not of the letter but of the Spirit; for the letter kills, but the Spirit gives life.
2 Corinthians 3.6
The arrival of the New Order marks the PASSING AWAY of the “old order”
Luke 5:38 NASB95
“But new wine must be put into fresh wineskins.
Luke 5:28 NASB95
And he left everything behind, and got up and began to follow Him.

The New Order would not be welcome to everyone

Luke 5:39 NASB95
“And no one, after drinking old wine wishes for new; for he says, ‘The old is good enough.’ ”
The Jews who questioned His “different ways” are drunk with the old wine!
NKJV - the old wine is better
LEB - the old wine is just fine!
The Jews who were “content” with the old wine are the ones who missed the new wine of God - the outpouring of the Holy Spirit!

Summary

Why introduce a new order?
Jesus introduced a new and different way of ordering the life of the believer of God because THE OLD ORDER SIMPLY DOES NOT WORK.
the Old Covenant could not make the worshiper perfect before God.
When God is bringing us into a new way of doing church, it means He wants is bringing something that will effectively transform our lives.
Jesus introduced a new way of ordering our life because God is going to do “new things” that only “new lives” can fully embrace and understand.
the Holy Spirit was poured into the believers’ lives when the new order took effect
Isaiah 42:9 NASB95
“Behold, the former things have come to pass, Now I declare new things; Before they spring forth I proclaim them to you.”
Ezekiel 36.
Ezekiel 36:26–27 NASB95
“Moreover, I will give you a new heart and put a new spirit within you; and I will remove the heart of stone from your flesh and give you a heart of flesh. “I will put My Spirit within you and cause you to walk in My statutes, and you will be careful to observe My ordinances.
Why would people reject a new thing from God?
Those who reject the new order are the ones who are holding on to the past.
people reject a new thing because it means giving up the old ways.
On the other hand, those who are looking forward to new things from God are ready to give up the old order!
the disciples were ready to go with Christ all the way, despite His unpopular position.
John 6:66–69 NASB95
As a result of this many of His disciples withdrew and were not walking with Him anymore. So Jesus said to the twelve, “You do not want to go away also, do you?” Simon Peter answered Him, “Lord, to whom shall we go? You have words of eternal life. “We have believed and have come to know that You are the Holy One of God.”
John 6.66-6

Conclusion

Am I still drunk from the “old wine”? Or am I ready to receive the “new wine” from God’s hand?
What can I do to be ready for the new wine?
BE A NEW WINESKIN!
flexible
malleable
willing to be stretched out
Have an expectant heart towards God. Expect God to do new things, fresh things, great things!
Do not attach yourself - your emotion, your mind - to temporal things.
Be sensitive to the move of the Holy Spirit.
