The Unbelievable ordinary

I'm just going to spend a couple minutes reflecting versus trying to do 20 minutes because I'll be honest with you. The two screens in front of me are are not as attractive or is fun to talk to is being at the pulpit and watching each of you. But I will say one of the things that we're doing as we move through this time is is we're moving into what's called Ordinary time. Once again, we've gone through these big seasons in liturgical year, right? We started a couple months ago with Advent all of the preparation for the coming Messiah and then Christmas comes and we celebrate the Incarnation the reality of the of the Christ coming fully God and fully human here on Earth. And then we've just gotten out of a piffany with the culmination of that being the baptism of Jesus where we began to notice that Jesus was here. And so now we're moving out of epiphany into this moment of ordinary time between now and Transfiguration leading to add that leading to Lent. Are you going to like how how does life work in the ordinary? Hi everyone. We hear that word. It's not the most exciting word often times. When you have an ordinary day. It's one that doesn't take much detail to figure out it's one that we don't really spend a whole lot of time regaling all of the details. And all sorts of things that we do that are very ordinary, right? We wake up in the morning. We shower we brush our teeth we go to work we spend time with her kids we go home wash rinse and repeat.

But we have most of our liturgical year in ordinary time. There's got to be something that's worth understanding. There's got to be something that's worth recognizing a significant. Then I think in this story in John we can start to unfold just a little bit of that. I made a wedding for as exciting as it is, right and is a wonderful. Is it still a pretty ordinary event people get married all the time. It's not something that we always are telling everybody about and certainly as time goes by and years go by we remember a little less and a little less of our weddings. And certainly the party after the wedding if you're talking about something that is perfectly ordinary. It would be the party after the wedding. We haven't time to get Caterers. We get all the pieces together. Some of us probably had open bars. We spent our money. We spent our time and when we wake up the next morning, we realize it was a bit of a blur. We don't remember most of what happened. It seems terrifically ordinary even such a special occasion. It's not very often that we can say Jesus in the flesh was at a wedding. not not only by himself though with his mom. They're hanging out at the wedding together. And the waiting continues to go on its towards it's understandable and imagine if there was such thing as the chicken dance and the Electric Slide those would have already been played at this wedding. Probably Don't Stop. Believing would have finally been played in everybody would have been singing at the top of their lungs and now The last bit of wine is running out. That's what Jesus performs this miracle me turns water into wine. And people begin to notice that this even ordinary moment seems a little bit out of the norm. Now the bridegroom not been pulled over by the steward. He might not even have known what it happened. But here in this in this very mundane moment became something that was unbelievable. The Unbelievable ordinary thing Most folks put the good wine first and save the not-so-good whites. And yeah, but you do your bridegroom did something different.

Feel like that one of the worst curses of thinking that ordinary and the ordinary time is not something of significance is that we can miss the unbelievable moments when Jesus is right. Beside us. Jesus is performing Miracles right next to us off in a corner amidst the stewards and not right in front of us off of times. I get teased when I'm walking on particular sidewalks. I noticed a sparkle in the sidewalk and it reminds me of who God is the god might even be in the sparkles in the sidewalk.

And so as we think about what does it mean to have unbelievable ordinaries? I believe most of it is just simply recognizing that Jesus Christ is doing amazing things in the places that seem most mundane most boring and most easy to forget. Even on a day like today when we have level 2 and level 3 snow emergency zipper thinking about - I wish I would have gotten more bananas or I wish I would have gotten more bread or I wish I would have gotten more of everything there are moments when Grace can break through. The moment when we can be with our families a little longer the moments when we can cherish just a little bit more time at The Breakfast Table the moment when the coffee tastes a little bit more sweet. The moments when we can gather together even online and worship God. This is a courses in ordinary thing people get online and and live stream and spend time together all the time. We are on Facebook all the time. But here in this moment Jesus breaks through in a little different way becomes just a little different than what it did say, 20 minutes ago. I don't even if we consider the First Corinthian passage in conversation with John. We recognize that all of these things that we are these gifts that we have these things that we do with one another in church or outside. The church are moments where the unbelievable ordinary can break through because here is where the spirit resides with us. Each of you friends have gifts that God has given you that can be used in so many different and amazing and wonderful ways. It's not just the folks who are upfront. It's not just the folks who will serve you communion or will be elders and deacons. It's the smiley faces when people are greeted first thing in the morning as they walk in the door. It's the folks who are willing to knit and sew and cook without any sort of recognition, but give their hearts to love those around them. Each time we do that we get as close as we possibly can to the unbelievable ordinary moment. When Jesus turn simple Water to Wine in an ordinary everyday typical wedding in that moment. Jesus broke through in an amazing and different way revealing himself in a pivotal moment. That wouldn't have happened. Otherwise.

It's a friends as we go through the balance of this service as we think about our day where many of us are going to be locked into our homes. Where you going anywhere today. Your house spend time with your family a little bit more. Maybe look around and see where Jesus is right now next to you and beside you. There may be unbelievable ordinary moments. Just waiting to be exposed and to be revealed to you today. This is the grace of God given to us. Thanks be to God.
